View Full Version : Extra Chapters Information Thread

14th February 2017, 02:23 PM
(I don't expect people to read this thread. I'm just putting my findings down, but feel free to comment if you like.)

I've been using the information on the Outlaw Star Wikia (http://outlawstar.wikia.com/wiki/Outlaw_Star:_Uncollected_Issues) for a while to find these extra chapters. However, I have reason to believe they got it wrong. I decided to make this thread as a log to record progress in my acquisition of these Ultra Jump issues. Here's what we know so far, and what I already own.

ULTRA JUMP November 20th 1998: Outlaw Star #18 (Intermission)
ULTRA JUMP December 18th 1998: Outlaw Star #19 (Intermission II)
ULTRA JUMP March 20th 1999: Outlaw Star #20 (Sacred Ground)
ULTRA JUMP May 13th 1999: Outlaw Star #21 (Chaser)

I found Intermission included in one of Takehiko Ito's doujinshi. But getting the other three has proven no easy task, since these are issues that are almost two decades old. I think I've found the Ultra Jump issue that has the final chapter, Chaser. So, what's the problem? It will set me back over $50. I'd probably say closer to $70 or more with the costs of using a proxy and shipping. So I'd really be taking one for the team here. I could wait for a cheaper listing but I'm not sure when or if such a time will come. Now, about that misinformation, the Wikia says the chaser issue is from May the 20th. The information above came from Wikipedia (I think) and says May the 13th. But...

Clearly, you can see this issue is from the 25th of May, 1999. So I was wondering, maybe this is a special issue and Ultra Jump sometimes doesn't run once a month. So I consulted Yahoo Auctions' feature to search closed auctions...

While this user did not list the Chaser (or so I believe) issue you could see in the first picture, we can see a few things here. First of all I should say, the site that listed the Chaser issue showed it as issue #29. We can see the March issue that's supposed to have Sacred Ground inside is listed as #27 in the listings screenshot. #28 is April, and #31 is shown to be the July issue. You do the maths. Now I see there was no special issue and the issue dates reported by Wikipedia and Wikia must be incorrect. Therefore, I'm confident that by getting the 25th of May issue I would receive the Chaser chapter. But if anybody can advise otherwise, let me know.

Also, I think the Chaser issue that was listed at over $50 must be in pristine condition, which I don't care about since I'll be debinding the books to scan and touching up in an eventual scanlation. The four issues above were listed only a month ago for a few dollars each, and generally the 1998/1999 issues probably appear every couple of months, so I don't mind waiting a while to save money. I've tried using automated search e-mails before but they don't work very well, sadly, so I'll need to remember to check every day. (Perhaps I'll find a Gilliam II soundbite to play as an reminder. :D)

Anyway, that's the story so far. I've stalled scanlating the manga for a while now, and there's an extra project that has priority over it. You'll hear about this project in a month or so, or perhaps earlier as a teaser trailer. Or you can get early information on it by becoming a Nexus Crusader and gaining access to the Galactic Leyline. (As of now no exact rules for this—you'll be picked by becoming an enthusiastic and regular poster.)

This is what brought me to Outlaw Star UK originally! If this has it this is just one of the few (but major) steps towards getting those chapters! I never understood why they didn't make those chapters into their own collection separate from the Ultra Jump magazine.

I understand the creator went to focus on the anime and never came back to it but it's still such a shame to never finish a project like that!

If you can get those scans Mantis I would be eternally in your debt! Let me know if there is any way I can help with obtaining the other issues. I'll start to keep an eye on eBay and other sellers if I go to a con I'll look for those issues

14th February 2017, 02:56 PM
I think Takehiko Ito wanted to continue the manga but there might have been clashes with licensing since he sold the rights to Sunrise. But I can't confirm that. Maybe if I look into the video interview at some point he may have said something about that. I covered my theories on the whole thing in the other similar thread in this subforum. So if you check that thread out, I think my theories about how they would have been published in tankobon form are correct. In short, I believe the extra chapters were going to be published in the upcoming volume four, which I think I found an image of one day. It had Aisha on the cover, but I might be remembering wrong. Whereas the "Outlaw Star 2" I found was for volume five, "My Favourite Things". I'm really kicking myself about not saving the volume four cover image, unless it's something I dreamt of. (Very likely. I do dream about Outlaw Star... :s)

Well, if you ever stumble upon those issues be sure to post about it! My usual search string is "ウルトラジャンプ" followed by either 1998 or 1999, and I use Yahoo Auctions, and some others such as Surugu-Ya (where I found the expensive Chaser issue), Melonbooks, etc. Most of the time I find there are no search results even on the popular Yahoo Auctions. And if you do find results they're probably from the other months we don't need. But I'll be sure to check on a daily basis, so you needn't worry about it! (Though if you find them at a con, grab 'em! ;))

15th February 2017, 12:27 PM
Ah, the fifth volume is going to be a treasure to seek, or is it a myth, we may never know...! I'll keep on the lookout.

There is an additional cost to publishing tankobon, and if there weren't many chapters, it may not have felt worth it to produce a separate book from the Ultra Jump issues, but it sure would have made finding the stories easier on us. Eh, all part of the adventure, I suppose!

Thanks for keeping us informed!

15th February 2017, 01:41 PM
As explained in the other thread, I think this is from the beginning of volume five:

...though I'm not stating that as a fact, only a theory. You're absolutely right about tankobon. Like the wizards of Tenrei and caster shells, there are people who can produce custom tankobon, for a fee. (You could use a general printing service which would be cheaper, but it wouldn't be as accurate.) All I can really say is that since I'm going to resume translating every chapter of Outlaw Star soon (once I've finished another OLS project), I have plans. While we're here I wanted to talk about the translation since I haven't mentioned it in some time.

I know how it must look to some people in the community. It's overly ambitious, and I announced the manga translation a couple of years ago and haven't shown anything since the several pages of the second volume I posted ages ago. I'll have finished the first volume (Fire & Ice) before May, hopefully sooner. And I know people won't like this decision since the first volume has already been translated, but I want to translate while reading it. (Is this such an odd thing?)

Also, I want to learn how to better scan the black/white pages and eliminate all of the moire. Anyway, I'll probably make another thread to talk about the translation sometime. Sorry to go off-topic, guys. :melblush: (And this is why I need to put Hari's Gwen Khan smiley on the board at last.)

I thought we found some of the missing chapters in Ito's doujins, but I could be wrong. He could have made those just to sell doujins. the ones I'm thinking of are Nakayoshi and About Azell Anecdofe Amazing A4.

16th February 2017, 04:04 AM
Hey Idolo. It's great to see you around again. Do you know which chapters? I have Nakayoshi which has Intermission. (As you see, I gave it a strikethrough.) To be perfectly honest with you, I have at least five copies of Nakayoshi (maybe more) with one being a limited edition "Book Shop Version" or something with a slightly different cover. (I haven't checked for other differences. Imagine if there was a Takehiko Ito signature hidden inside. Keep dreaming, Mantis.) I got them on the cheap so I figured I'd buy more and give some away in competitions or something, since I have to pay a lot for shipping and commission and may as well stock up a little. I know, I am mad.

You have my thanks! This information is priceless. And you know what? I think I might already have that Azell one, looking at the cover. Every once in a while I've bought a bunch of OLS hentai (maybe with a couple of Ito doujins mixed in) but didn't end up reading them as it isn't my kinda thing, and had no awareness of this. Kinda stupid of me in hindsight. I'll see if I have that one tomorrow (gotta sleep) and go on a big hentai quest. Please don't judge. :swanzo: It's... for great justice.

16th February 2017, 05:18 AM
No judgement here, it was a hentai quest that I found out Ito's circle (Yami No Mahoujin) and bought some of them.

16th February 2017, 01:49 PM
Unfortunately... no dice. :aishafrown: I already debound the Azell doujinshi not that long ago. I just forgot its name and given the amount of these books I have, seemingly which one I did debind! There's a reason I did this though. It's the one that I got the extra Sword of Wind art from and some other goodies. Alas, no extra chapter! This hasn't been a waste of time however. I've reminded myself of the amount of great content that are in all these books (well, I'd let you guys be the judge of the hentai and I'm on the fence about uploading these) and the fun I could also have colouring in some of it. (Particularly, Takehiko Ito's sketches and old concept art.) Still, looks like I'm back to the Ultra Jump hunt for now.

16th February 2017, 02:11 PM
Oh yeah, there was this odd extra story I found in the Azell doujinshi. Once I understand some of the Japanese I might be able to figure it out, but I disregarded it as canon. Despite the manga being risqué I doubt Gene would have sex with Suzuka and Aisha (not at the same time, hah) in the space of two pages.

Bet I know what you were hoping would appear.

Sorry for the crappy phone picture.

17th February 2017, 06:35 AM
Gotta love the fan stuff.
Quality smut at times...

17th February 2017, 12:14 PM
These are by the creator! You don't want to know what goes on in fan stuff.

...What? Get your mind out of the gutter, you.

24th March 2017, 02:51 PM
I've had no luck so far. I think the Chaser issue is cheaper than before, at ¥3600 or about $32 (http://www.suruga-ya.jp/product/detail/ZNAWO15092). But that doesn't count shipping and I'm still willing to wait a little. Today I installed the Yahoo Japan app on my iPhone, so it will alert me of any new Outlaw Star and Ultra Jump 1998/1999 listings directly as a phone notification. The whole process of getting items from Yahoo Japan is pretty cumbersome, so I might start selling some of my items on the same section 3D prints are currently at for a much cheaper price than the eBay auctions. Anyway, I'll keep you posted on any Ultra Jump issues I find. I'm in no rush since I have a lot to translate before I get there.

My heart practically skipped a beat when I saw this auction: http://page10.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/m195588844

After doing my homework though, it seems none of the issues are the ones I want. I might bid anyway, just in case. =/ (I'm getting pretty desperate.)

17th April 2017, 03:42 AM
I got in touch with a company that specialises in "item hunting" of sorts, or also an online order service. I was mostly asking about the Ultra Jump magazines. Here's the reply I received:

In general we can't accept searches for items offline as it can be very time consuming to find items in physical locations (if we know an item is in stock somewhere, like it is limited to a specific store, then we can assist).

Usually online prices are pretty indicative in Japan of the value. If the magazines are priced highly online they are probably sort after and will be expensive no matter where they are found. I'd recommend this site for the best deals though: http://www.suruga-ya.jp/search?category=&search_word=%E3%82%A6%E3%83%AB%E3%83%88%E3%83%A9%E 3%82%B8%E3%83%A3%E3%83%B3%E3%83%97+1999

If you wait long enough you may be able to get a good deal at Yahoo Auctions but it could take months or years for one of the volumes to show up on there for a good price.

She makes a good point. I should really be taking any chance I get. Even though I've seen it before (linked in a previous post), the URL she sent shows the issue that's supposed to have the final "Chaser" chapter inside. There are two problems. First of all, I'm not absolutely certain it does. I'd say it's a 95% chance. Every sign suggests it is, but I don't perfectly know how the issue format of Ultra Jump works. Secondly the reason I didn't jump at this opportunity in the first place is that it's not cheap. Ignoring the hundreds (maybe over a thousand) extra yen for postage, packaging, proxy commission and extra international shipping it's still $37 for a single magazine. I must confess that I already ordered a few Outlaw Star things a couple of weeks ago. If I ordered this magazine within the next week I'll probably be able to get it inside the same shipping package which is best cost-wise.

So, I'm having a problem with affordability now. I guess maybe I dug my own grave by giving into the temptation of other Outlaw Star items. :D Regardless, since we're all in this together and the manga is something we all want, I want to ask for your assistance in getting these magazines. If a few of you chip in $5-10 for each one it should help me out a lot with the final value. Should you go ahead with this, while I would feel a bit guilty about being the one who receives the magazine, remember that I'll be performing manga surgery on it, so after I debind and scan the chapters the magazines will be effectively useless to most people. Let me know what you think.

18th April 2017, 12:29 AM
Another sighting: http://search.rakuten.co.jp/search/mall/%E3%82%A6%E3%83%AB%E3%83%88%E3%83%A9%E3%82%B8%E3%8 3%A3%E3%83%B3%E3%83%97+1999/

It's interesting how it's always the "Chaser" issue I see. To be fair it's a pretty good one to find since it contains (hopefully) the final chapter of Outlaw Star. I just wish the other ones would pop up somewhere. I found this the other day: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r145076951
It's extremely frustrating, because it's one issue before the Chaser chapter, and one issue after the penultimate (Sacred Ground) chapter. In other words there was a two-month separation and this is smack-bang in the middle. Still, if I'm able to afford the Chaser issue, at least it's halfway towards extra chapter completion.

18th April 2017, 10:25 AM
Well it was the reason why I joined the forums originally when it was OS UK. I'll pitch in $5 via PayPal for the chance to get those chapters. If anybody else is down to help out I say let's do it and see what we get. If it does have it, awesome. If it doesn't, we can at least rule that issue out then indefinitely.

18th April 2017, 12:05 PM
I sent a message to Faeye on the Comic Vine website who has made many contributions to the Ultra Jump section, and I'm really glad I did! It turns out the one we thought had the Chaser chapter in it in fact does not, and she's provided a very good explanation as to why that's the case. The great news is that the one I linked to in my last post (thinking it was very nearly what we want) is actually the issue with Chaser! Even better, it's currently only ¥1000, which is at least ¥3000 less than what I was planning to order. I can afford this. Anyway, here's Faeye's response:

I will do some edits to try and figure some stuff out there, I've had trouble tracking down all those early issues myself for quite a while but the chapter you are looking for is almost certainly in No. 28, not No. 29 (I'm in the same place as you where I've had to put money down on back issues to confirm these things).

I believe they mean May 20, 1999 as the release date, not the cover date and Ultra Jump always releases itself a month before the cover date (in modern days it's almost always on the 19th but a holiday could push it to the 18th or 20th).

If you check the index of the 28th issue here (https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r145076951), you'll see Outlaw Star is listed in the contents. Meanwhile, if you check 29 here (http://www.suruga-ya.jp/product/detail/ZNAWO15092), there is no Outlaw Star. Hope that helps, this is exactly one of the reason I do this work. I'm sure you know already but jauce should allow you to buy that 28th issue and have it shipped to you. That's how I've had to do it at least.

I will upload a few more issues if I can based off the frustrating retail covers but if you do manage to get better covers of any of them, please feel free to upload them here!

I did not expect that! :D Japan sure has a frustrating way of handling their cover dates. This means that this issue could be the one with the first Intermission part: http://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/detailPage/item?itemCode=1062719150&ref=list
But fortunately I don't need to take that risk as I already got that in a doujinshi. Still, this could change everything so I'm going through all the listings again to find any dated one month before the release. At any rate, I should be able to afford the issue on Yahoo, but any future contributions will help since I'll almost no doubt run into more expensive magazines.

Jauce looks interesting, but since I currently have an order waiting with Japamart I'll place a snipe bid on issue #28.

Update: Headshots! I won the auctions, two magazines for ¥1000 each. (Well, there will be some extra costs on top of that.) I have no idea what's in the second magazine, but since there is an Outlaw Star chapter I figured I'd just go ahead and buy it. But at least we're nearly certain I'll have the final chapter (Chaser) soon.

21st April 2017, 11:02 AM
You are amazing Mantis! Thank you for all of the hard word! Now I need to learn some Japanese...

21st April 2017, 11:15 AM
I've got that covered. For the extra chapters I'll have the same person who translated the audio drama assist me. ;)

21st April 2017, 07:24 PM
I still want to learn Japanese though...I got the mangas and light novels for Outlaw Star INCLUDING one for Princess Mononoke

3rd May 2017, 07:21 PM
I got my haul. Interestingly though, inside the magazine that was believed to be the one with Chaser (chapter 21, the final) was actually the penultimate chapter, Sacred Ground. That means that since this magazine I got is Ultra Jump #28 and we found out this one (http://item.rakuten.co.jp/surugaya-a-too/21787029-1/) (er, if I remember right?) doesn't have an Outlaw Star chapter in it, Chaser should be in issue #30, dated as a June issue. It's quite confusing for my feeble mantis mind though, so I hope I've got this right. Either way, I'm not sure I'll be able to order again for a while since I spent a lot of these Outlaw Star items. Anyway, here's what you've been waiting for...

The chapter cover:

Bonus Hilda poster:

Interesting get-up:

Melfina Kart... brum-brum :melangry::

Yeah, only some crappy preview phone photos for now. I won't be ready to debind this magazine for quite some time since I'm translating everything else first.

3rd May 2017, 09:32 PM
Very cool

4th May 2017, 04:51 PM
Thank you God-I mean, Mantis

6th May 2017, 12:52 AM
Good news. I think I figured everything out and have caught a listing for the issue with the final chapter (Chaser) inside. I've made a request to my proxy to snap it up. The magazine is super-cheap, but I'll have to pay a lot more than the cost of the magazine in commission and shipping. It's worth it though. You need to (or get hit with a fine) pay the final shipping costs within thirty days after they receive the item, so maybe I'll use the time to see if the one remaining chapter (Intermission II) turns up anywhere.

Anyhow, I'll let you know if my proxy succeeds in getting the issue. I'm totally psyched for this and the manga in general. It's been tough to work hard on the translation every day but it's great fun to read it as I go along, like a whole new Outlaw Star story. Well, that's what it is... silly me! :D It's really growing on me.

Edit: My proxy got it! Just Intermission II remains. (Still, I won't update the list until it's actually in my hands.)

15th May 2017, 03:06 PM
Intermission II (Ultra Jump #25, or so I hope) popped up and I've ordered it! Mandarake really is a great place to order manga-related items from because they deliver worldwide themselves so you don't need a proxy.. The only downside is delivery. SAL is far cheaper but it can take a month to deliver, and I'm too eager about this whole thing to wait that long so I went with DHL. EMS was also an option which is fast and recorded delivery, but since DHL Wordwide Express was only ¥200 more I just went with that as I might have it on Wednesday. The magazine itself was only ¥200, so in the end I paid less than $2 for the item and $35 for the delivery! The costs are even worse when you use a proxy. This is why I keep saying to nearly always buy lots of items at once. Also, on that, I personally advise against using DHL (at least in the UK) for anything a little more expensive. (In the UK, over ~$19.) You'll nearly always be hit with a customs charge, whereas with SAL and EMS this never seems to happen.

Back on topic though...

15th May 2017, 07:46 PM
Woohoo! Thank you Mantis! Can't wait to see the pages! I've been wanting this for so long :D

16th May 2017, 05:43 AM
Great news, you are the king of the outlws. Love the Aisha pic. I've seen it before, but very low res.

19th May 2017, 11:57 AM
Intermission II get!

Time to strike that off the list. Now only the final chapter awaits. It might be a while until I receive that since I'm waiting for more Outlaw Star goodies to appear on Yahoo Japan. As things stand I don't have enough items at Japamart to make the purchase more economical. As I said, the more you order, the better the overall deal due to commission and final shipping costs. (Note: I got the above magazine from Mandarake which ships internationally.) Right now there's the Chaser chapter and I found another of the art book (Promotional Art Book... in 3D! (http://outlawstarnex.us/booktest)) I had to sacrifice for scans, so that's awesome.

To those of you with access to the Galactic Leyline board (I just gave you access, Idolo), the long-delayed next thirty pages of the manga are coming today. Hopefully I can get the thirty pages after that on tomorrow since it's mostly a matter of getting my translations on the manga pages with the 120 I've done so far. Enjoy. :)

Wait... thhe author of Outlaw Star wrote a non-canon fic where Gene scores with Aisha and Suzuka?
Authors can be cray cray.
I suppose non-canon fics from Authors aren't necessarilly uncommon.

I wonder what drives authors to make Doujinshi of their own work.
In some cases they do a what if scenario (Like Oda's take on Sabo arriving at Marineford) and in others I guess they just want to have a bit of fun with something that they don't intend to be canon, either because it can't/wouldn't make sense or because it's just good fun without canonical consequences.

11th July 2017, 12:48 AM
I think it's more to do with creative freedom. When mangaka draw for a magazine their publishers will assign them an editor who oversees their decisions and tells them to make certain changes. There's also a chance the magazine will have some restrictions in sex and violence. With doujinshi there's none of that. And indeed, as you note it's also not necessary to follow canon.

24th April 2019, 09:47 PM
Ha ha.
Should have read those manga threads earlier.
Looks like I have to take some stuff back, I wrote about Ito and the manga. Sorry for that.
Concerning that one fic Ito wrote.
I`d like to write something about that, but i dont want to spoil anything from the yet untransleted volumes.

Overall a great job collecting all this stuff.
Hats off!

This was a great read. Very exciting stuff. Can’t wait to read these final chapters!
