    Customs Charges

Robbing bastards, I tell ya! What's the highest amount you've been stung with for a customs charge? I ordered a couple of Outlaw Star items from the US, and I expect this is what the card that got pushed through my letterbox this morning regards.

I'm okay with paying a few quid for VAT. A few quid isn't too bad, is it? Yeah, well, the total for this charge was £11.74, which is nearly $20. That's because I was given an "£8 handling fee". This is even more ridiculous than many "admin fees" I've been charged for various things in the past.

So, what do they have to handle? Well, I guess they wrote my name and a few digits on this card. Oh, and apparently they have to put a big happy sticker on my parcel! Pro handling. I'm wondering if those in the US get any stupid charges like this. For the record, I haven't been charged for any items I ordered from Japan. I will be more selective about US orders.

The fact of the matter is that the posties have already been paid for the delivery of my goods before this customs bullshit happened. Rip-off Britain...

    RE: Customs Charges

Sorry to hear that, but me not really. I usually have to pay a small fortune on shipping alone plus the lengthy time for the delivery. However, there is another thing we have to be afraid of is US Custom will at times open your foreign source mail from time to time. About one or two years ago US Custom with the FBI arrested a person who had ordered a bunch of loli manga from Japan for possession of child pornography. If memory serves me right the package was "damaged" and they had to look in it to see if anything was damaged. He was sentenced fives years federal prison time and registered as a sex offender for life. I be the first one to say that I put child pornographers on the same level as rapist and murderers and should be punished as such. But the way US law is written this goes get a little bit scary because congress established "I don't know how to define what smut is, but I know when I see it" type of thinking. Sorry for bringing this up, but just letting you know what goes on here. And sorry for making it a little political too.

I mainly just get stuff from China and don't pay anything because it's really inexpensive electronics (DealExtreme type stuff). However, not sure if they mark it as gift or not which is probably the case.

I've sent some small stuff to friends elsewhere and don't recall them complaining about customs but then again, the value of the stuff is like $5.

How much was the value of what you imported?

Lord-Idolo: Sorry I didn't notice this earlier. I guess the forum must be getting more popular, huh? Whilst I don't care for and particularly support paedophiles, I would defend their right to read loli manga if that floats their boats. How in the hell is the guy a sex offender? It's better than downloading child pornography that actually shows child molestation and is very wrong. Seriously, that's ****ed up. The problem with politics and paedophilia is that there's a big difference between being a paedophile and a child molester. I don't see necrophiliacs getting arrested. They're turned on by the dead, but since they're not shagging corpses, no one cares. Land of the Free. Yeah right.

WiseNinja: I can't remember, but it has since come to my attention that the seller made no attempt to fill in a customs declaration form. It was probably above the limit, but they decreased that recently so even more people can be robbed. I agree with the whole DX thing. The deals are great. You can add some kind of "drop shipping" item to your basket for a cent and they mark your package as a gift so you can avoid customs. Amazing, isn't it? I've made an order of around $150 from DX once and it wasn't flagged by customs. It goes to show what the Chinese can get away with.

    RE: Customs Charges

This guy was one of a rare few to get arrested purely for possession of under-aged fictional character porn. First, he didn't fight it in court and signed a confession too. Second, thanks to President G.W. Bush's PROTECT ACT states the law enacted 18 U.S.C. § 1466A, which criminalizes material that has "a visual depiction of any kind, including a drawing, cartoon, sculpture or painting", that "depicts a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct and is "obscene" or "depicts an image that is, or appears to be, of a minor engaging in ... sexual intercourse ... and lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value". Here is a link to this guy's case on ANN. (http://www.animenewsnetwork.co.uk/news/2010-02-11/christopher-handley-sentenced-to-6-months-for-obscene-manga) I personally stay away from loli because I find it disturbing and the possibility of getting busted like this poor bastard for a crime with no "real" victims.

Well enough of how screwed up our laws are. Are the custom charges have to do with the Take-Out and Lost Universe art book? I wonder.

    RE: Customs Charges

I wasn't aware of that case but will definitely be more careful about accidentally stumbling across content like that while searching for manga/anime as I actually remember there being one on Netflix with vampires I think it was where supposedly there were some explicit scenes involving minors. I remember some of the comments saying something like how does Netflix allow this pedo crap etc.

As for the Chinese, technically what they do isn't really legal though as you'll see some sellers on eBay strictly speak out against the gift practice but in the end, I'm guessing customs is pretty lax towards light packages.

For some reason ANN comes up as error. Just search Christopher Handley Sentenced to 6 Months for 'Obscene' Manga and you'll find it.
