Is 2020 really as bad as everyone is making it out to be?

There has been a lot going on but if I look at history and our past on this planet, I'd say things were way worse during the major wars, when slavery was still legal, during the black plague... It is ironic how quickly people forget these things when bad things are happening. While we have all witnessed a string of unfortunate events this year, I can bet the people living in the early 1940s had a lot more to panic about.

What are your thoughts on what is going on in the world right now? Is 2020 really the worst year ever like people keep saying?

The fact that we're only halfway through and several major events have already happened definitely makes this seem like a really, really hard year. Also in the age of social media and the 24-hour news cycle, no one is able to catch their breath and process what is happening. At least within my circle, a lot of us had this mindset of 2020 was going to be our year and we were going to get our lives together but instead, it's one event after another and it's defeating.

I also see this being one of those time periods where 50+ years from now people are going to look back and say similar things. "Wow, the people of 2020 really went through it, is the crap we're dealing with now that bad?" It's all contextual.

I agree with slaughtermaid. I'd also call it very much subjective because of the benefit of hindsight. We'll all see this in a different light by 2021. I'm pretty sure everybody agrees that the Spanish flu was catastrophic. The coronavirus has been devastating but we're only at a fraction of the death toll of the Spanish flu. Its first wave had pretty mild symptoms (with the second being extremely deadly) but the main difference is that they didn't really have much to stop the virus. They had face masks but not the medicine or the technology of today that's allowed us to preemptively reduce the death toll by many millions. Of course, many see this as more of an economic crisis than anything with some going as far as downplaying coronavirus deaths. There's also the amount of tension this is creating between world superpowers. (Mostly referring to USA-China and India-China.)

Unless there's a second wave (which I think there's a significant chance of with how lax everyone's being) I agree that damage from 2020 won't be on par with many past disasters. And like said, we're not even at the halfway point yet. Anything could happen. I'd probably say that 2020 has been the worst year in recent memory. Not many can say they've seen anything like it. Obviously I'm not disregarding the War on Terror, but that didn't affect people on a global scale.

I recently saw a video about this same topic. As Mantis said, it's been the roughest in recent memory but not the worst year to be alive by far.

Normally I'd embed the video properly but i'm on mobile. I'll edit this later on my desktop version.

It really makes you look back too. Like the worst we have been experiencing lately has been happening in just one year but when you look back and see how much worse it was in many areas in human life, it makes you thankful in a sense. Also, this could be a sign that the future will be even better if we look back on these times and think they are horrific.
