One Year Anniversary of KyoAni Fire

    Hey my dudes and dudettes,

The one year anniversary of the KyoAni fire is coming up next month.

What were some your experiences upon learning about this incident occurring?

    I'll go:

I recall seeing some posts online on Facebook and checked YouTube and saw the reporting from Japanese based news agencies.

I was 100% shocked and surprised by fire and learning that the fire was the largest since WW2.

I went to the Houston based company Sentai Filmworks company online GoFundMe and donated towards the victims and their families.

I hope that the families get closure and the full weight of the rule of law is brought on the perpetrator.

(One thing I wish would change is this: I noticed that financial group that processed the donated funds took north of $89,539USD in transactional fee processing payment from the Houston based Sentai Filmwork company to KyoAni on GoFundMe. That money could have gone a victims family. If GoFundMe, of the transactional fee processing was waived or reduced, would have been welcomed).

I remember this pretty well. I was talking to a Japanese guy about it a week or two back actually. He took an interest in murder cases, particularly those in the west. I believe he mentioned that most of the time in Japan there isn't a particular motive for killing; an indiscriminate act. Now that I think about it, in this case I think that the killer was really pissed off at the studio or something like that.

Yeah, it's no wonder it was a big fire, arson aside. All of those oils must have really worsened the situation. Animation cels are highly flammable and there were so many in that studio.

I vaguely remember the discussion on this forum. I did find it to be terrible news, of course, but it didn't hit me nearly as badly as the 2011 tsunami. (Erm, no pun intended there... ) Now that was madness, especially the videos of it. Both are tragedies though.

Come to think of it, I don't believe I looked into the conditions of that anime studio. It sounds to me like the building wasn't very safely made which reminds me of the Grenfell Tower fire here in England.

In most ways it's a different scenario. This was a tower and it was flammable cladding that caused that much of an ignition. In the case of that animation studio there probably weren't enough fire escapes to save the employees from the arson, especially with as many deaths as there were. In a studio that contains so many flammable materials there needs to be plenty of them.

With all that's happened since, I regrettably haven't reflected on that particular incident much (not that i've forgotten it of course). I'll always remember going into work that morning and my boss bringing it up to me then showing me the news story on his phone.
