Is it good or bad the way people are acting over the coronavirus?

I only know because of the memes but people are reporting that places all over the world are selling out of hand soap, sanitizer, toilet paper, and masks. It would seem people are so terrified of catching it, they are overbuying to try to stop it. The best way to prevent it though is to ensure everyone has access to soap, TP, masks, and sanitizer so it ends up doing more harm than good.

Not only this but people are crowding into shopping centers, drug stores, and groceries which in turn makes it more likely to spread the virus.

While I am not worried about the virus at all, I am worried that because of the way people are acting, someone who can get deathly ill from it will catch it.

Is it good or bad the way people are acting over the coronavirus?

I stocked up on tinned food as a precautionary measure. Quite a modest amount that would only last me 1-2 months, just for the possible scenario of food being panic-bought by other people! I'll probably eat the tinned food somewhere down the line anyway since it does last a couple of years at the least. The way things are going in the UK, I think it was a sensible move on my part. Seriously, our government's stance is downright ludicrous. Now they want everyone to give each other COVID-19!

I'm telling my parents to try online shopping for a while anyway, but they won't listen despite the fact they use computers for other things on a daily basis. I always thought that economically (amongst other factors) online grocery shopping is the way to go. But now that's more true than ever for different reasons. I don't know what goes through people's minds when they decide against getting shopping safely delivered and instead going to supermarkets that are often packed and may have people with COVID-19 inside.

My mother is also still intending on going to church every Sunday. She'll probably still go to the gym and she's still going to her dance class every week; sweaty environments where people will be most susceptible to catching an infection. If she ends up getting coronavirus she can't say I didn't warn her. She's taking enough bad steps for me to consider severing ties for a few months. People aren't taking it seriously enough and it's that attitude that got Italy where it is now, and it seems likely to me that Britain will meet that same fate. Ireland on the other hand is taking sensible action.

Yeah, Americans aren't worried about the virus now and no doubt with Europe becoming the epicentre of the virus there will be much more of us worried at the moment, but I do think the tables are turning on the US too. Trump was really indifferent about it for months. What a wake-up call it must have been for him to initiate travel bans and declare it a national emergency. The bans won't save the US though. They should have done that over a month ago.

Oh believe me, we americans very much are. At my job I was swamped with calls for people wanting to reschedule in light of the virus and we even had a team huddle talking about it. I was grocery shopping today and the toilet paper section was completely gone. I've never seen anything like that happen before and I'm seeing more and more people wearing face masks (Even though I learned that it's actually not that effective). Thanks to the news media, quite a few people are panicking and stocking up.

Now, it's kind of 50/50 on if people are overreacting. I think it's good that people are caring more about their hygiene and trying to stay as healthy and informed as they can so they don't catch it. On the other hand, it's clear that people are going into hysterics and scrounging up everything they can for themselves as if Judgement Day is at hand. I think this coronavirus is serious business but I don't think it's going to be so serious to the point where it turns into a real life version of Steven King's The Stand. Businesses and schools can't stay closed forever and people are going to have go outside at some point or another.

In short, I think people should heed and be cautious but freaking out about it isn't going to do anyone any good.

People in America certainly should be worried, so in a way I'm glad to see that. Not in the form of doing stupid shit like rioting supermarkets, but taking precautions such as limiting contact and staying informed. That would be unlike the dumbasses that roam our streets:

The virus is bad because of how contagious it is and how it is a high risk to senior citizens. Other than that, it will likely end up killing far fewer people than the standard flu season we get every year. I still think that if people want to stop it from spreading, common sense is the best approach. If not for yourself, do it for someone who might have health complications from it.

Wash your hands after being in public. Don't touch your face. If you are coughing/sneezing, wear a mask in public. Don't go within 10 feet of anyone who appears to be sick with something. Take vitamin c to boost your immune system and drink plenty of clean water. Get good rest at night and don't stress. If you are over 65, avoid heavily crowded areas like airports, hospitals, etc. and if you must go in public, be mindful to wash up when you get home.

The virus only lives on surfaces for a max of 60 minutes. It is very easy to prevent it from spreading if people use common sense but we all know most people are in a panic mode right now and toilet paper is the new currency... *sigh*

People are acting like panicked sheep, so yeah...it's bad.
They ignored it, ignored it, ignored it....................FULL PANIC.
It really proves the 80/20 rule. Most people just operate on auto-pilot and exist until external stimuli forces them to act. Then that auto-piloted 80% take the same kneejerk action. In the US it was a night & day difference in my area. Last Wednesday people were joking about the virus and the stores were operating as usual. Then on Thursday there was just a different vibe in the air. I went shopping after work and it was a damn circus. Every checkout counter had 6 full-to-bursting carts waiting in line so I just left and went to the Dollar store where TP & other things were plentiful. It wasn't until Saturday that people remembered the dollar store and picked that clean as well. I have a few pictures from my adventure!

I'm not really concerned about the virus since I'm a virile young alpha-male, but I am worried about other people's panic behavior. The virus isn't going to wipe out all food sources, but spazmatics who run out and buy everything all at once will. People who aren't even sick are the biggest threat to me. On top of that, I agree with Korin that people did the worst thing possible. As soon as the virus was declared a pandemic in the USA, everyone rushed out and gathered in the same place!

When I went to the gun store I got the last box of 9x18 Makarov ammo...the guy in front of me was buying 18,000 rounds.

That would be nice, but we don't have that where I live. Postmates/Uber Eats/Doordash/etc. don't serve my area and Amazon does have Prime Pantry but that's 2-day delivery and doesn't include cold things/perishables. Plus I need to pay shipping and amazon's prices on groceries are rather high. I would absolutely use online shopping if the prices and selection were better & my area was covered. My wife also likes to get out of the house sometimes to go shopping, so there's that as well. I'm a homebody so I get where you're coming from, it's just not an option for many of us who live in a much larger country than Britain.

You should sell most of that off at a reasonable markup. It's the old people who find it difficult to get access to these things (and should isolate anyway) among younger crowds who deserve these at a fair fee. Not that it's easy to actually enforce that on sites like eBay.

In other news, it sounds like the UK government actually listened to people like the 300+ scientists who denounced herd immunity as stupid and counterproductive in this scenario. Even though the government hasn't imposed lockdown which they absolutely should, at least gatherings are being reduced and the elderly are being strongly encouraging to isolate.

But you know the phrase, "you can't please everyone". In the UK, that goes "you can't please anyone". No matter what the UK government chooses, even if they're finally using measures that have worked in other countries, people will moan and they'll moan loud, downplaying the virus and sulking about not being able to do as many things. Due to the fucking morons this country is packed with, simply telling people they "should" distance can cause them to totally ignore the best advice at this critical point in the outbreak. The country isn't necessarily perpetually fucked because of the lazy government, but more so the cavalier public.

Jesus Christ, that's an overreaction if I ever heard one. It's not the fucking T-Virus or whatever the hell caused the zombie outbreak in Left 4 Dead. Whatever bad shit goes down, it's not going to be the point where you'll need to cap a mother fucker.

Give the poor man a break. He just needs the ammo to use his constitutional rights to safeguard his toilet paper.
