Do you think we are any closer to COVID-19 being an afterthought?

It seems like it is only going to continue to be amplified and a lot of places are experiencing a second lockdown with several places worried they will be facing another as well. What went from being an issue that would soon come to pass, we are now still facing restrictions, and having to worry about it even more given the "flu season" is right around the corner.

I know each year in the US, the flu season kills around 170k to 250k people each year. This is prior to COVID-19. So if this is as huge of an issue as they claim, it should be killing double of the "normal". The reason so many people die each year in the US as well is down to our country being very unhealthy. A lot of people having chronic illnesses and diseases. Even a small cold could cost someone their life when their body is unwell.

Anyway, do you think we are any closer to going back to normal?

I think we may be getting close despite the ongoing severity of the illness. A lot of COVID's media presence is related to the upcoming presidential election. Whether that's people using the virus as leverage to attack Trump or Trump's own folks using it to talk about what a great job they did & talk down how Biden would have handled it. It's become a political talking point & it's not in either side's best interest for it to leave the public consciousness.

I fear that it has also been a useful litmus test for politicians to test the level of control they have over the public. Which life-changing demands can they make and have people follow? For how long? How heavy of a hit do they take in the court of public opinion for extended lockdowns? There are many far more dangerous illnesses that are legal to spread & things you can legally ingest that will kill you over time. I think there was a bit of opportunism at play here to drag this out to test the waters.

There are 2 positive sides to all of this (if you want to call them that) in that: 1. remote work has enjoyed a complete overhaul in both perception & technology. Millions of people who were told for years that they couldn't complete their work from home discovered that there was absolutely no reason to report to an office. 2. We now know how far & fast a virus will spread despite the best efforts of governments around the world. Knowing ahead of time that you just can't stop it will keep a lot of people safe next time this happens especially if it's something far more deadly. Thank goodness it wasn't something with a 50% chance of death.

Speaking for myself, I'm not at all worried about it. Even if I caught it, I'd be fine. I've never even had the flu and colds only keep me down for 2 days or so. That said, the reason i'll continue to curtail my behavior is that I'd hate to be the inconsiderate asymptomatic carrier who gets someone's nice old granny killed. As you said, the death toll from Coronavirus over 8 months is comparable to a single regular flu season in the USA. We really needn't be more worried about the Coronavirus than the average flu when you consider it that way. Logically speaking, the extra measures we take don't need to go on any longer but if I can continue working from home & if it makes high-risk people more comfortable then I'm fine continuing this way. I don't think we will see a relaxation of pandemic measures until Spring at the earliest.

Any closer? I guess so. I think we're far from out of the woods though. Viruses thrive in the following months. My area will probably go into local "very high risk" lockdown tomorrow or very soon which will bring back most of the restrictions from the national lockdown earlier in the year.

The coronavirus will indeed get worse before it gets better, in my opinion.

Something that I heard, now I don't know how true this is, but I heard Virginia will be mandating people to get flu vaccines. This means by law, they will be forcing people to get shots regardless of if they want them or not, and legally, they are allowed to do this because of their current laws in practice. That is rather scary to me. I never liked flu shots, never trusted them. I never even had one myself. All the people I know who have had them for more than 5 years in a row have severe medical conditions. I feel like they are not properly used, tested, and a lot of people end up getting sick from them. This is another topic for another time but it is pretty scary that a state can force people to be injected with something against their consent if this is true. Very slippery slope... I almost feel like they are using it to counteract as a political move. Like for the people who are against abortions and want that outlawed.

It just seems like politics in this country at least is using it as a weapon to manipulate people and that ain't right. So many people lost their jobs, businesses, some even lost their family because of this. To use it as a political weapon is sickening.

I heard that about the "mandatory" shot as well. While I know people who have gotten the regular flu vaccine for longer than 5 years and are doing just fine day-to-day, the flu vaccine does make my Dad sick for a day each year. He takes the day off work when he gets one...which leads me to ask why he's getting them in the first place. I've only ever had one (for the Swine flu) and my arm was sore but that's all. Then again, I've never had the flu and very well may be naturally immune.

A mandatory vaccine is bad enough, but a rushed one? Hell. No. For the non-Americans out there who may be confusing this sentiment with something akin to an anti-Vax Facebook Karen, keep in mind that America is a corporate hell-scape at times & the Gov't will allow (or force) you to get injected with shit that outright kills you as long as it makes Pharmaceutical companies money. They are very closely in cahoots with one-another and it's happened in our past since food & drugs are less strenuously regulated here. Our doctors try to load us up with pills & vaccines every chance they get because it's so lucrative & they earn a kickback for each prescription they hand out. There is no drawback to pushing an un-finished vaccine on us, aside from the fact that they aren't certain if it's safe but that has never stopped them before.

I won't be taking the vaxx for at least 2 years from now unless the police force me to. I'm at near-zero risk considering my age and health, it would be safer for me to go lick door-handles in New York City than get injected with that rushed vaccine. If they make it "mandatory" I'll just purposefully keep getting COVID so they can't get close to me. If it's super-effective & safe? Awesome. Let the old people who need it take it. MY BODY MY CHOICE.

I completely agree with that, I'm not taking any kind of vaccine that hasn't been through the proper testing process. All I hear about the Russian vaccine seems really sketchy.

Apparently here in Mexico, the country already plans to receive the Russian and the Oxford vaccines. Billionaire Carlos Slim said he had something in place for the Oxford one. But when the time comes, it's going to be a nightmare trying to find out what vaccine places are offering.

Mexico generally seems to be more open-minded about organic health practices though so I can't imagine people would be too keen on getting a vaccine like that. They rushed the H1N1 vaccine and a number of people in the US reported having negative side-effects days, weeks, or months after the fact that can't be traced back to anything else. The biggest one was an issue with the kidneys and people having kidney failure. Happened to my nana and she got that vaccine.

Stuff like this shouldn't be rushed. It needs to be tested properly.

There's a vaccine here (aforementioned Oxford vaccine) that's more or less ready. The government won't be able to get it to everyone any time soon, but to be honest I'm not eager to try it.

Most vaccines I feel require a minimum of 5 years of testing. This is the issue though with modern flu vaccines. By the time they are properly tested and cleared, most people don't need them. Those who were at risk either had it and survived or didn't and have passed away. Rushing it does no good either because you don't know how people, especially those who are already sick with a chronic illness, will handle it long term.
