What are your thoughts on colonizing Mars?

In terms of colonizing Mars, what are your thoughts?

    Do you have any concerns?

Do you think it is a good idea?

I was thinking about this a few days ago and thought I would make a thread on here about it, see what everyone else thinks. I personally think exploring it is good but I don't think people should be moving there to live. I just get bad feelings about it. Like, it would make more sense to set up a small base or something on the moon. Like a dome kind of thing like they did in Futurama for the amusement park. Mars cannot sustain plant life so everything would need to be regulated and controlled using technology. If something fails, everyone could die. It is far enough away that something going wrong would end in disaster.

    Well, my humble thoughts are

But that's just because I love science fiction. Realistically, I understand that it is not feasible and probably won't be within my lifetime as much as I'd like it to be

Like nagato I feel it's unlikely I'll see it before I croak. It'd be really cool though, not to mention a necessity for humanity much further down the line.

I've played the Doom games and I can say with authority that starting a colony on mars will only lead to disaster...

It may not occur in my lifetime, but it is something we need to accomplish as a species.

I don't have anything against it, apart from the stupidest idea I have ever seen, which is selling "acres of land on Planet Mars". I don't know who is stupider in this endeavour: the sellers or the buyers.

Is that an actual thing people were talking about?? LOL What the heck?

Actually, on the topic, I think other countries will start to go there and it may lead to some kind of space war in like 50 years. Nuts to think about.

Yeah, we are in for re-enactment of the very first season of Gundam xD

Unfortunately, this is very much true. There are corporations which pride themselves on selling "space real estate". On TV in my country, some guy proudly presented a certificate that he owns a small land parcel on Mars.

It is strange how we've become focused on colonising Mars and not really bothered with the Moon. That would surely be the most obvious step for space colonisation, but nope, Mars it is. It's like running before you can walk. Baby steps and all that.

This is exactly what I was thinking. It would be safer too because you are not so far from the earth where if you ran out of food, you would die. I mean they mess one thing up and it could kill everyone on Mars.
