Is Disney trying to own everything or am I just imaging things?

It seems like, over the last 20 years, they have bought up a lot of properties in the entertainment industry.

Pixar, Marvel, and Fox to name a few. They launched their streaming service this year as well.

Someone mentioned them gunning for something like Hello Kitty or Pokemon next. Rumors of them launching their own gaming sector have been all over the place for the last few years too.

Is it just me or is Disney legit trying to own everything and take over the entertainment industry?

They're certainly owning themselves with the shitty reboots they're churning out, that's for sure.
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

Funny that you bring that up because I was thinking about making a thread about how Disney is overrated and how they are seemingly monopolizing entertainment. Outside of a handful of Disney movies, I was never a fan of them. I remember listening to a podcast that described most disney movies being made for sheltered children and I think that's not off the mark. They make the most toothless, inoffensive corporate movies around. This wouldn't be that bad if they haven't target other studios and properties. They got Marvel, which is sort of fitting but now they bought 20th Century Fox, which means they have the rights to movies like Alien, Predator, The Fly among other classics, the types of movies that I wouldn't want Disney to even look in the same general direction of. The sad thing is, Disney is sending most of 20th Century Fox's library to their Disney vault. This, combined with how anal Disney is about their copyrights and who does showings of their movies, I fear that future generations wont experience these great movies. It annoys me that so many people applaud this acquisition with a lot of their reasoning boiling down to "B-but...that means we get Deadpool in the MCU!" without thinking of what this means for entertainment as a whole. And after what they did with Star Wars...I hate to see what they do with the Alien franchise should they choose to make it. Hell, there's already rumors of a PG-13 Predator show being made for Disney+

The depressing thing is people see these remakes in droves. The Lion King and Beauty and The Beast being prime examples. Those movies made gang busters at the box office, suckering people in with nostalgia for the originals. Meleficent 2 bombed so I hope this is a sign that people are waking up to this crap. Of course, there a lot of Disney apologists in the world who are willing to throw money at Disney which will give them bad ideas.

I can't imagine why they -wouldn't- want to own everything. They'll probably push it right up to the limit of monopoly laws. You may hate it, I may hate it, but the unwashed masses will still run out to see the reboots they make so I feel that it's a losing battle at the moment.

What is sad is the people who are against capitalism are their biggest fans and give them the most money. It is ironically stupid when you think about it. lol

I've noticed that most of the blue-haired Liberal Arts majors I know at college are huge Disney fans, so I think you're right. I challenge you to find me one polyamorous, non-binary demi-boy who doesn't adore The Little Mermaid. The same folks who would "occupy" Wall Street with a Starbucks coffee in-hand. they're not against big business, just certain ones that they don't enjoy in the first place. Working in a college town, there are tons of small businesses in town and I usually grab lunch from small local places. I see tons of blue collar townies and 'regular' looking people in there, but I never see the hippie-types in these stores who you would expect to see protesting out front of some mega corporation. they may refuse to eat at Chic-fil-A but they surely aren't supporting local businesses in droves either. They probably get most of their groceries delivered directly to their trans-cave via Amazon Pantry or something so they can put their money directly into Bezos' pocket.

I'm way off on a tangent, but I'm all jacked up from my morning Monster & coffee (which I buy from a business here in town run by a single dude who roasts the beans, then I grind them myself by hand. Hipster lvl 99) so I just wanted to rant for a minute. The recent happenings in Virginia around gun laws have me super heated this morning.

I still hold by my comment from a few days ago that Disney wants to own everything and as Mantis and Starwind pointed out, they will probably pursue any/all intellectual property regardless of whether they can make a quality product with it.

I've noticed this trend among them too. Considering most Disney movies, especially the more modern ones, are so safe and inoffensive so they don't have to worry about jokes that might come off to them insensitive. Even a mild, off-color joke would be enough to set them off. I tell ya, these people wouldn't last through stuff like a Troma movie.

Or even old Jim Carrey movies.

You'd think that they didn't exist in the 1990's or early 2000's. Comedy is meant to make fun of something or someone. That is how it works. It is like they are so miserable that they can't laugh at anyone, especially themselves. My favorite stand up comic is George Carlin and he was known for ribbing on Christians and I didn't take it as a personal attack at all. It is comedy. If you don't like it, don't watch it. These people act like someone is holding them at gunpoint and forcing them to watch stuff they disagree with. It is insane. I am convinced they get off on being offended.
