What is your take on guns?

I know some countries have them banned, others have them heavily restricted, and then there are a few who allow them to be purchased and monitored by the general public. I have mixed feelings about them. I am in the US and while I do like that they can protect families and homes when the cops aren't always an option or around, I still fear them and don't like to handle them or even be around them.

Personally, I've never handled a real gun (though I'd like to), but I will never advocate for restricting your right to own a firearm. Whether it's for hunting or self-defense, it's your right, and no-one can take that away from you.

Here in France weapons are sorted by categories from D (lowest) to A (war weaponry) based on various criteras such as caliber.
D grade weapons are sold to any 18+ person exept, of course, you have to declare it, go through weeks of administrative bullshit even the administrators hate and don't fully understand. And of course if the weapon is stolen or lost you have to declare weeks before anything happen or else you're responsible. From C to B it's qualified, registered in a club and suveilled people only.
A grade is strictly forbidden outside of millitary infrastructures. Any kind of explosive is A.
Of course the higher is it, the more administrative course, legal restrictions, and responsibility you get.

Personally i think it should be more restricted, but simplified for the ones remaining legal.
But globaly our system works : we don't have a lot of mass shootings like in the USA
(which is for a lot of us the incarnation of irresponsibilty towards guns, sry to say it but it's true).

Personally, I have nothing against guns. Having them all out in the open is another thing though. In my country, all fire arms are licensed and issued mostly to the military and some ex-cops are lucky enough to keep them. Robbers actually get their riffles from these ex-cops and if, like in the US, they were handed to the public, the amount of chaos would bring the country to its knees. I think in a contained environment, they are very useful and offer a sense of safety that can help people thrive. Since the situation is not so, I really wouldn't want them to be issued to every family.

Rural US guy here, i think they're great as a hobby, as well as an excellent self-defense tool. I love going out to the range with safety-conscious buddies and shooting paper/clays/steel. If guns aren't being used to maliciously harm someone, they are perfectly fine.
I'm happy that they exist and that i have the option to use one to defend myself or my family should the need arise.

    Responsible users is a utopia.
    Never overestimate mankind.
Most humans are centuries away from being responsible with guns.
And if you want to understand why there is such a system in your country (and i like this system you have), just spend ten minutes on the Darwin Awards site, you'll see why guns are so restricted without even taking crime in account (spoiler the USA is the N1 contributor).

Put a gun in a well-behaved citizens hand with a family to protect, and you'll have done the society a favor. Put a gun in a psychopath's hands and you have multiple casualties on your hands. Is it really worth the risk to save a couple of lives to risk a few lives being killed? That's up for debate

There is a famous lyric to a song that says "You can't talk peace and have a gun."

However, I still believe that owning a firearm is your right, but you should be responsible and exercise patience when handling it. Only use it for leisure activities and self-defense and nothing else.
