    Legal age?

It is as simple as this, what do you think the legal age should be in your country? In my opinion, 20 years is as good of an age as any. Many countries and states in the world consider their citizens to be of legal age when they're either 18 or 21. For most countries in Africa actually, 18 is the legal age. What made me ask this question is that a friend was wondering how old a babysitter should be. My answer was simple, any age past teenage. Teenagers are rash and hormonally overcharged. I think it would be better to hand an Identification card to a citizen who's over twenty. Your views?

This depends. Age doesn't define responsibility. That is a huge issue with the way things are set up. Just because someone is 18, 20, or 21 doesn't mean they are mature or accept responsibility. I actually don't see many people under the age of 30 taking responsibility for their actions or their lives these days let alone being mature.

As for a babysitter, as young as 14 can be great but it depends on the individual. You can find a morally responsible and mature 14 year old just like you can find the opposite in a 24 year old. Character should come in here as well as upbringing, prioritizing, and accepting responsibility.

In France we use several legal ages.
Sexual legal age is 15, gambling (in casinos) and owning a certain caliber of weapon is 21, the usual (drinking, driving car or heavier, joining the army...) is 18.
I think it all depends of what you put a legal onto.

Yeah, sorry, when you say "legal age" ... for what? Drinking? Gambling? Smoking? Working? Driving a car?

In my opinion, there should be a single legal age that incorporates everything. You know, an age when one is considered an adult and can drink, have sex, gamble, smoke, work, drive, own a weapon, enlist in the army, babysit, take a loan, have an adult bank account etcetra....

Thank you for clarifying. And since you asked, I'll chime in that I disagree with that idea.

You're right, teenagers are brash, and shouldn't have all the entitlements/responsibilities of an adult. It's partially because of this, I contend, that you gotta' give them something to help pacify them/give them an outlet of personal freedom. For example, here in the States, I remember looking forward to 16, driver's license, then it was 18, smoking and whatever else I could do in my state lol, then 21 for drinking, twenty...whatever it is for renting a car lol, that kinda thing. It's gradual: If I had to wait till twenty something to do ANYTHING, good lord I'd probably have gone nuts.

If there's a single "legal age" then you have to aim for your lowest common denominator, so to speak: like, sexual consent, you certainly don't want that too low, so this universal "legal age" has to be higher up, as in adult-aged. Thus, you have to be fully an "adult" to babysit? Or to start driving a car? Smoke tobacco? What does that leave both angsty teens wanting to rebel a little (so what smoking's bad for me, it's my life!) and those who are taking on some responsibilities like a part-time job (Becky babysitting someone's kids on the weekends) to do for fun and/or money?

Or...you're putting the age of consent pretty darn low imo for stuff like taking out a loan, gambling, strip clubs, etc., especially the loan stuff, credit cards, or heck even military, stuff where you're often signing legally enforceable binding contracts, major life decisions...and when you're 18, let alone younger, you pretty much know fuck all when it comes to that level of planning and judgment. XD

Now that's a good standard. How I wish we have that kind of thing here in our country too. What we have is conventionality. For instance, your parents will say you're still too young to have sex even if you're already 18 as they will say they had sex way older than that during their time, etc. It's not cool.

To bring a bit more info on that, we have a rather wide sex ed program in school around the age of 13.
And because sex induces public health we have some measures such as free contracesption and screening for -18 etc...
And i think it's crucial to bring all kinds of measures along with legal age, whatever the subject but especially for public health.
I also talked about it in the guns thread.

And fuck the uptight religious/parents/moralists who spend their life preventing others to enjoy theirs.

In my opinion a legal age of 18 is good enough but unlike other countries which have different legal ages for different reasons, here in the Philippines we only have one legal age and that's 18 years old. The downside if this is that if you're below 18, you couldn't be employed or have a job since you're still considered a minor. And that has a negative effect in our economy.

Sixteen is the age of consent in England. There were recent attempts to lower it by a year which obviously failed. It's been this way for over 130 years, and I think it's a reasonable age. If you're at least five years old you can drink alcohol at home. Not sure about gambling, probably in the range of 18-21. Actually, some stores here are so paranoid about age limits they've introduced "Think 25" policies. In other words, unless you look that old you might be refused cigs/alcohol.
