    'Murica

Weeeeeeell...we'll see how this goes. Hopefully, I don't ruin any friendships because of this! I'm a U.S. citizen, so with a presidential debate looming around the corner, I can't help but have politics on the mind. To that end, I'm sort of curious (in a general sense), what do some of you non-Americans think of our country lately? Do you give it any fleeting thought when you read some click-bait-as-all-heck headline on the web, or do you not think about it at all? How about any fellow 'Muricans here...what do you like and/or not like about our culture?

As for me, well...I'm still flabbergasted we've ended up where we're at (well, actually, in some ways sadly I'm not), and I'm quite perturbed by the idea that someone with the temperament of Mr. Trump might actually be in charge of where we deploy troops and if we launch nukes or not. I mean...seriously, doesn't that bother anyone else in the least? I'm not endorsing any candidate, btw. At this point, it's not a matter of political preference in our hilariously divisive country: it's a matter of a serious lack of sensibility.

On a (hopefully) less-controversial note, I'd rather we did away with tipping in restaurants: by that I mean, of course it's your prerogative if you want to give a good server a little extra, but right now in most places in our country, servers literally NEED that tip to make just enough money to make ends meet, yet it's construed in our culture as a "reward" and all of a sudden every little person gets to feel like a feudal lord dolling out favors to the serfs for all of five minutes just so they can go on with their grinding 9 to 5. 'My server didn't offer water nearly as often as I would have fancied...NO TIP 4 U!!!' WTF? It's stupid, and we need to just pay servers at least the minimum wage, and if you wanna' "reward" someone for what YOU judged to be exemplary service, then a tip can function as it ought to: as a bonus, some icing on top. Leaving hard-working people's fate on whether they eat or not in the hands of fickle douchebags is...well, moronic and cruel, simple as that.

So, anyone else? Any quirks about American culture that you just find odd? Have at it (and don't hold back, we probably deserve it).

I'm from the states as well, and honestly most of my complaints are state related (because...New Jersey). I find it irritating despite being a non-driver that we have a law against pumping our own gas. I'm also in one of the few towns left to have Blue Law (Basically, businesses that don't sell necessities, particularly food, can't be open on Sundays. I think shops should have their own choice.). There's plenty of political problems in general otherwise. But that's the main stuff I could think of for now.

All I can say is I'm really, really sorry you guys have to put up with a guy like Trump. How someone like that ever ended up as a candidate in the first place, I... I really don't understand the political system at all, but there has to be something wrong with it.

We've been facing our own political crisis here in the UK, with all the Brexit nonesense... honestly, I try not to worry about this stuff too much because battling my own personal issues is difficult enough without seeing the world around us slowly going down the drain. I know it's a terrible attitude to have, if everyone thought that way then there really would be no hope. I'm a defeatist at heart.

As for tipping-- you've already paid for a meal and a drink presumably; which sure isn't cheap to begin with, so why should you have to pay the waiter/ress on top of that? It should be up to the owner of the establishment to sort their pay out, not the damn customers! I've heard horror stories of them spitting in food, knocking over salt and pepper pots, and just generally being rude simply because they weren't tipped. I'm sorry if your pay sucks, but that is no excuse to behave like a shitty human being over it. Take it up with your boss, not the customers.

Ikr? If there were no tipping, then the owner/boss just pays the servers a minimum wage (like literally every other job) and WE customers just pay for our food without having to feel guilty if we're unable to pay the proper amount for a tip....then you wouldn't have disgruntled servers who felt like they didn't get enough of a tip (or got snubbed), and the likelihood that they'll scornfully mess with your food logically has to go down, right? (Unless you're just being a prick lol.)

I personally envy a lot of countries that have free healthcare/schooling. I can understand having to pay a bit, but the insurance industry is just really confusing and there's way too much red tape. Then again, red tape is a big thing in general here. Another issue is social services is almost never actually social. By that, I mean...How long have you waited to hear back from a government office about ANYTHING? Seriously, half the time I can't even get to leave a message. They're worse than me.

Mhmmm...gov running too much, you get too much red tape. Private sector handling everything, eventually you get a few pricks at the top who collude with one another to make ridiculous sums of money by screwing over the poor and disabled. You can't win. But at this point, I'd be fine with being proportionally taxed for social services including health care so everyone can reap the rewards of having basic necessities met. I mean, sure there would be drawbacks but everyone whom I personally know from Canada seems to generally like their "free" healthcare. I know, I know, I quoted "free" because some hawk would inevitably screech "It's not free! Nothing is free!" I know, I know...technically, I and everyone else in the community pays for street cleaning, snow removal, and a well-equipped police force...but if there were a country next door where, every time you called the police, you had to break out your credit card, guess who's the one with a "free" police force i.e. appears to everyone else on the outside looking in as the more civilized society? Bingo, you win the prize: the one with the "socialized" police force and the "socialized" snow removal. (Aren't semantics fun?)

Semantics are fun that way. "Free" is a complex concept. And the police? Oh god don't make me think of them. The police have bizarre rules in New Jersey. You know what the main job of the police here is? TRAFFIC CONTROL. If there's a traffic jam and you're in the middle being attacked by your neighbor (yes, I speak from some form of experience) you come AFTER the traffic. :/

Also, more weirdness that is from 'murica: I found this headline thanks to NaNoWriMo friends today. "Man mixing LSD and cough syrup saves dog from imaginary fire"

...I'm happy for the plot fodder, but that's REALLY MISLEADING when it's an article about him being arrested for breaking into a house and kidnapping a dog due to said hallucination.

    DIS ELECTION!
Makes an American proud about the state of things... no, that's not the right word... OH YEA! Ashamed, I was looking for ashamed.

It's not pretty but I'm expecting some long-time Red states to swing Blue and that the GOP will fully fracture, hopefully.
I say hopefully, because then that may well force them to take a look inward and reassess things.
Who knows, they may end up becoming a serious party again.
So, I'm looking forward to seeing the changes that this November will bring... so long as Trump loses that is. *shudders*

Yeah, libertarianism is fun in theory, like a lot of things, but it's a gamble trusting people to distribute resources properly.

LSD, it's serious stuff compadres, lol.

Btw, to our hermanos/hermanas across the pond, do you think they're going to go full on through with Brexit?
Or do you think the govt will abandon the idea as the deadline draws near?

So...is Rachel Maddow Shinji? Just crying all the time? Lol. Sorry. I couldn't help it.
Oh well...this was gonna happen either way. Hell, if Republicans had anyone other than Trump against Hillary, they would have won in a landslide.
If Democrats had anyone other than Hillary against Trump, they would have won in a landslide.
Two shitty choices. Time will tell if the choice we made was more or less shitty than the other.
