Steam Makes a Bold Stance on Freedom

Let's see how long this lasts. I have high hopes, but low expectations.

I support Steam's new policy, partly because I very much care about free speech, but also because it triggers the hell out of game journalists. It is a real treat to log on to Twitter and find game journos whining about what amounts to really a non-issue.

I dunno, I see this more as damage control than anything. I don't see them putting Active Shooter back on the store. Not that they should, but since offensiveness is the discussion here I think they were looking for a free pass to appease both sides (keeping tosh like Active Shooter off the store while allowing anything else on the store) and continue avoiding any kind of moderation of the shovelware problem Steam is still facing.

I hold my hands up though. I have more Steam games than I could ever play and a good chunk of them are crap. At least I don't own this...

Am I happy about Steam's stance if I look past the ulterior motives? Of course! Just stop being selective about what to allow. Bosoms never hurt anybody. Give adult visual novels an adult restriction if you have to. I'll just be glad if they keep this up and stop pandering like every other distributor does.
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

I wouldn't be surprised that they did it in light of a backlash. Something similar happened with Hatred a few years back. Still, it's good to hear that everything is pretty much fair game. I'm a bit of a free speech absolutist so I feel that no subject matter for a game should be censored. The real question is, will Steam stick to their guns?

You can find offensive things in literally every single game that has ever been made. Same with music, movies, TV shows, and so on. The issue with "taking offense" is that it is completely subjective. I hate that school shootings happen but if I seen a game like this on Steam, I wouldn't be outraged over it. I just wouldn't play it. What Steam is doing is not picking sides on anything. I commend them for that because in today's world, you have to pick a side or you are ostracized by everyone and their mother over it. All these social politics are toxic and grouping people is just as bad. We should be seen as individuals.

Either way, I support Steam for doing this.

So far, this accurately reflects my attitudes about this, save for a healthy bit of caution
