    Are we tricked into overspending?

I noticed that there is a huge trend with smartphones alone. This is seen mainly with the Galaxy phones and iPhones. People seem to feel the need to buy a new one every year even if their phones have no issues at all. While this is obvious, there are plenty of other items people seem to get tricked into or at the very least, persuaded into buying when there is no general "need" involved.

Do you think we are tricked into spending more money than we should or are we willingly spending knowing we tend to spend beyond our needs?

It's a problem with status. Everyone wants to be their own person, but apparently "being your own person" means everyone subscribing to the same dull trends and habits in order to keep up with their ever-distant neighbors. Hence why so many upper-class idiots spend money on needless things. I don't like spending money unless it's something I really, really want or need, and I find that I enjoy having a simpler life.

Not sure if relevent, but you know what I hate?

Subscription services that make it sound like it's easy to opt in and opt out but when you want to unsubscribe you gotta jump through hoops, compete in the olympics and at least win a silver medal, get awarded the purple heart, do 20 backflips in a row on camera and then send in a ticket to the customer service portal in hopes that they are gracious enough the respond to you before your 'eligibility for refund if you cancel within 0.0005 nanoseconds after renewal' is over.

Just put the button on the same page that allows you to subscribe/change your plan. It's the most common 'asshole design' I've seen and it's in literally everything (including uninstalling software among other things).

That's how a lot of services get you with free trials. Gotta put in the credit card just to have a free trial and auto-renew is always set on and you gotta go on a treasure hunt to turn it off. They hope you forget about it they get some $$$ and assuming you realize your mistake after the fact, they make it super hard to cancel the service you didn't want to pay for in the first place.

I wouldn't say "tricked", but incentivized for sure. It's just marketing, and if someone falls for marketing then that's their fault.

Sure, and if you are raised in a society that buries you under aggressive propaganda 24/7, and you fall for it, it's your fault for not having any critical mind.

Purchasing decisions are still YOUR decision though. I know you're really scared of capitalism, but you can't just pass off personal blame so easily.

Okay, Alex Jones. I don't think the government/society is using mind-control to force you to buy a new phone. I will agree that we live in a consumer society that rewards purchasing behavior. You use the internet quite a lot for someone who dislikes the U.S. Government and consumerism.

    Mm-hmm.
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"
