Your thoughts on the United Airlines scandal?

So I am sure most of you heard about the doctor that was basically assaulted for not giving up his seat. What bothers me the most is that this man was a doctor and going to see patients. He should have been able to stay just based on that alone but no... They took the man out of his seat with force and dragged him out the plane on his back. Such a disgrace. I couldn't believe my eyes when I seen it. I have no respect for that place.

You know what they do in other areas if the plane is over-booked? They tell people they can stand if they really need to get to where they have to do. A few people overbooked on a plane will not make a huge difference. Not to mention it is the airline's fault to begin with. How can you not handle basic math!?

As terrible as what happened to the man was, I think people's reactions are a classic example of a mob mentality. Now they've got a new target to send nasty messages to and create all kinds of additional controversy. Don't get me wrong though—United Airlines should have handled all of this so much better. I think at first they handled it fairly but then things got completely out of hand. They're at fault for overbooking flights (even though it's a common thing) and they need to correct that. But that's a matter of company policy in the higher-ups' hands. The air stewardess or most other staff there had nothing to do with it. A flight was overbooked and they needed to find a way to sort the situation out since an overbooked plane is a risk. Just standing up during a flight isn't the same as on a bus.

So what did they do? A raffle! Actually, they tried to do it a different way at first. They offered money (like $500 or a grand, I forgot) and a stay at a fancy hotel for changing to a flight a few days ahead instead, but only a couple of people took the offer. (Maybe there was two or three seats overbooked.) All they could really do was random number selection. As much as it sucks to have your day ruined and have a trip that is rightly yours cancelled, somebody had to leave. Indeed, the lucky winner who was manhandled was a doctor who had to see a patient the next day. Look, I see people's points about why a doctor should get privileges in these scenarios, but hospitals and practices tend to have procedures in place for these situations. Anything could delay a doctor's arrival. Instead the doctor held everyone up by refusing to budge. I don't exactly blame him since he had the right and how he was handled was awful, but the couple of others asked to leave did so peacefully as they understood the situation. It's not like the flight staff could just say, "Oh, this guy is refusing so let's pull another number out of the hat and make them leave instead."

It's all very messy. I wouldn't call any opinion on this absolutely correct since there are factors. And for explaining my opinion on this, in most places those who jumped on the "angry social media riot" bandwagon would shut me down without consideration. For those who haven't seen the video: https://www.liveleak.com/view?i=1c2_1491832138
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

You know, I know this is a serious topic but I wanted to say that at least this incident brought about some funny memes.

I'm with Mantis on this. It's a very unfortunate situation, but people hating on United and the flight crew are overreacting just as much as the flight crew themselves. This is just another reason for some people jumped on to be pissed about, while everyone else makes into a meme, like Harambe. Remember that? People were pissed for about a week, then it turned into a joke. Then people completely forgot about it a month later. The same thing will happen here.

Plus, I honestly cannot believe any airline would allow people to stand on a flight. That's a huge liability, especially considering you are required to fasten your seatbelt before the flight can even take off. Letting people stand on a flight seems really unlikely to me.
It sucks that this happened, to be sure, but it's been blown WAY out of proportion.

People weren't that angry with United but it was their response to the accident that made people even more angry. The CEO saying that the customer was disgruntled and in the wrong is obviously going to get people angry. The funny thing is that it would have been cheaper for them to get their staff an Uber or another flight because this is going to cost them hundreds of millions because of their stock, lost customers and the guy taking them to court.

This is just business being what business is at its barest form.

    It sickens me.

Sadly there's not much to do about it, cause people are usually aren't willing to shell out the extra cash for a flight on the sake of principle.
So as long as we only care about the cost of air travel, service will stay a distant, distant notion.

It's appalling what they did to that guy, obviously. The only silver lining here is that this is the type of scenario where lawyers really earn their keep. I hope they wring United for as much as they can possibly squeeze out of them, and it'll likely happen (United will probably try their darnedest to settle).

Dude lost a couple teeth from the whole ordeal. United will lose a lot of business from this, and justifiably so.

They lost something like 900 million in value after this. It will bounce back but as of now, that has to sting.

Well I really cannot say that I am at all surprised by it, but I am a little surprised at how there is not much backlash against the people who actually did the removing from the place. I would just think they would have said no I am not dragging this guy from a plane.

Yeeeeah well, you'd think...unfortunately, by that point, the one's doing the removing were the police, because United eventually called them...and in 'Murica, by the time police are called, unlike many other countries, rather than "restore the peace" they're just there to bust some heads...you know, the kind of behavior one would expect from thugs.

So, in a way, it's not like people weren't also mad at the ones who actually dragged the guy out...it's just that here, since it's yet another grievance against the police it's just like "lol u wut? Got a legitimate complaint over police brutality? Take a freakin' number, cry us a river while you're at it."
