    World War III

Most of us would like to start a new decade with a bang. That became quite literal for Qasem Soleimani, a major Iranian general (claimed to be the second most powerful man in Iran) who was assassinated in a drone strike a few days ago.

I'm sure you've all heard plenty about this, but I thought it'd make for an interesting discussion. Typically, tabloids are capitalising on these events, convincing millions of people that World War III is looming.

I can't say I'm particularly knowledgeable about this topic, but I understand that Qasem was a serious problem, organising many past and planned terror attacks, and being responsible for the deaths of thousands of American soldiers in the Middle East.

We're already seeing many WW3 memes and many people joking about, so honestly, it all makes it somewhat difficult to take this as seriously.

But what do you think? Have you already built your bunker? Do you think a lot of this is scaremongering, or are you constantly hitting F5?

Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

I'll believe it when I see it.

This isn't the first time something like this happened and people went "WWIII is gonna happen!" and then nothing came of it. And like you said, people are joking about this. I'm sure if a full on world war was about to commence, the majority of the population would probably be shitting themselves right now. Then again, I'm no military strategist so I'm not exactly in the know when it comes to the possible ramifications so who knows what it's going to lead to from there.

Iran's going to kick some dust around in retaliation and that's about it. This won't escalate to the point where everyone gets dragged in and starts firing ICBM's at everyone else.

    Besides, the cunt deserved it.

That'll be the day! This is one of their civilised members of parliament who were stamping their feet and yelling "DEATH TO AMERICA!!" in the past couple of days. Seems kind of ironic how they called Trump a terrorist in a suit. Like they're setting a great example here.

Of course you see many of the blue checkmarks on Twitter criticising assassinating a mass murderer and apologising to Iran.

Something similar happened during the Reagan administration, and we responded to their threats by destroying 2/3 of their military.
They can make threats, but this wont amount to much. It sure as hell wont be WWIII.
I think the best thing to do is target their oil refineries. They have three. Take one out. Threaten again? Take the second out.
They wont threaten a third time.

What's most telling to me is people calling this cowardly and condemning it.
And most of them are running for President or in Congress.

Just look at the numbers. The Iranian army even with its allies doesn't even account for 10% of what the US has alone. They do not have any nukes or anything like that. If they issue a war with the US, they would be committing national suicide.

People who hate Trump want to see him start a war and I can't for the life of me understand why. You want to see people die for the sake of being right? It scares me that people like this exist in the world. Between Clinton (Bill), Bush, and Obama they have put us in massive debt and killed more people on foreign soil than Trump could ever manage even if he does win this year.

I am not worried at all.

    And rightly so.

Nuclear weapons don't even factor into the situation. Iran has potentially absurd numbers available (ball park estimate would be ~1.7m personnel total if everyone was called to arms, including the Basij*) but they are sorely lacking in appropriate technology and hardware to back those numbers up in any sort of all-out-war against the USA. Obsolete aircraft (ironically enough much of it being American-built from before the 1979 revolution), second-rate Soviet-era tanks, a navy which suffers from the same problems as the Air Force (with lots of decrepit pre-1979 equipment from NATO), and I'm going to hazard a guess that when push comes to shove, even the oh-so-great IRGC would scatter like rats in the face of any real opposition.

The idea that this would at all escalate to a major global conflict is idiotic.

I'm not worried about it because I don't think a lot of countries will be lining up to support Iran of all places. Unless you want to be everyone's enemy afterwards, practically nobody but China and Russia will voice support for Iran. What do they have to offer even if they win? Some oil? There are less feisty countries with more oil to offer. Military strength? If your enemy is America, then joining Iran's team is a pretty bad bet.

If you've ever seen any battle footage of the Iraq/Kuwait/Afghanistan wars or more modern ISIS fighting, you can gather that most Middle Eastern military training is quite poor and amounts to little more than a militia rather than a trained Army. The last time a genuine Middle Eastern Army stood up to the USA was...Desert Storm? that didn't go well for them.

I'm not afraid of Iran's military being any more than a speedbump for US troops, but what I am worried about is this turning into yet another Iraq situation where we either beat them outright or intimidate them into backing down & then maintain a military presence in the region for 20 years. I don't want to keep sending my tax dollars to the Middle East for conflicts that have lost their purpose. I'm mostly concerned that Iran will begin backing terrorist strikes on the USA. Middle Easterners can hold a grudge like no other, so I'll need to live with the fear that my family or I will be hit with a terror strike whenever we visit a city.

It's just a mess all-around, but the short answer is that I don't fear a toe-to-toe conflict with Iran or their buddies. I do worry about a long & expensive conflict arising from this that has lasting consequences for generations. I'm sure the Europeans on this board also don't want us to lay waste to Iran, thus creating several million more "refugees" for you to absorb.

I read they put a bounty out to kill Trump. Not sure if this is true or not, I haven't looked into it but that is a bit much.

Not sure if anyone would even attempt that but it is said to be for 80 million dollars. I sure hope no one stupid enough living in the US attempts this because they will end up being shot on the spot. National security for the president is no joke.

And George Lopez "joked" about doing it for half. Of course that "comedian" wasn't arrested. And will probably call anyone who gives him shit "racist".
