    "So Bad, it's Good"

A friend and I were discussing the phenomenon whereby a piece of art could be described as "so bad, it's good".

Perhaps the most iconic example of this is "The Room" by Tommy Wiseau.

My friend actually does not like The Room, nor other sorts of "so bad, it's good" things, which gave me pause. At first I thought that most people did, but even then there is an explanation waiting to be found.

What we seemed to agree on is that when we describe something like The Room as being "so bad, it's good", that isn't to say that it is so bad in one way that it becomes good in the same way. It just means that The Room ends up being a much better Comedy film than a Romantic Drama.

In any case, it just ends up being a matter of Taste. I temporarily forgot it was possible for two people to not share the same likes and interests. Haha!

Another example of this phenomenon that I personally enjoy is "Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash". It's basically an AI-generated Harry Potter fanfiction using a repository of every word in all the official books, that was then curated by a small team to collate the best computer-generated lines and arrange them into the form of a narrative. If the idea tickles your curiosity, check it out.

What about you, though? Do you like this sort of thing? Or do you not?

If you do, what are "so bad it's good" things that you like?

I have a fine taste for it. Then again, you're talking to someone who has a love for cheese and campiness. I tend to like the movies from the 80s because it was filled to the brim with so bad it's good flicks. A big part of it is how genuine it is. When you have something that is kind of winking and nudging (Like Kung Fury) it doesn't quite hit as much as those movies because you get a sense that these people are just trying their damnest to make the best possible movie with what little resources (And in some cases, talent) they have. Sometimes it this leads to some bizarre moments that have a more, shall we say, comical execution than what the creators intended. Though I wont argue that they are "good" movies in the objective sense like direction, acting, ect. I'd happily take these movies over some of the more souless, corporate movies that you'll forget about the moment you leave the theater. Say what you want about The Room, at least it's going to be talked about for years even if it isn't for the reasons the director intended.

As for which ones I like? Well, there is a few that come to mind. First up is Deadly Prey, which is basically an 80s action movie where the filmmakers had no money whatsoever. However, it is fun as hell to watch. From the lead characters grunts to a moment that wouldn't be out of place in a Looney Toons cartoon, it's a hoot.

And another fun one is The Barbarian Brothers (Or The Barbarians depending where you're from) whose two leads sound less like barbarians and more like meatheads from New York.

There's actually an anime movie I've seen that absolutely fits this category. In fact, Mantis, Starwind and I watched it together a while back.
    Tokyo Fish Attack/Gyo.
The plot is hilariously stupid. Fish somehow found/made mechanical legs, can now somehow breathe on land, and come TO land to take over the earth, because......pollution, I think.
Oh, and the fish can also turn humans into Jaba the Hutt by farting on them. Yes, farting.
This movie makes no sense, and there are 3 separate explanations for why the fish have mechanical legs, and they're all completely different.
I highly recommend watching this thing, just because it so bad it's good.

I remember seeing films like this as a kid.

I was too young to realise how bad this shit really was. I need to watch them again!

Edit: Ninja'd by pseudo while I was watching awful '80s trailers!

YES! That film was incredible! Incredibly retarded, but incredibly fun!

    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

Oh damn, that show was something. The best part was the people were less concerned that they were being invaded by sea creatures and were more fixated by how bad they smell. Sucks that that there are fish things turning people into Shrek and conquering the world but man do they smell horrible

Funny that, considering how much of an average Japanese person's diet is comprised of fish and how revolting I've found the smell of sushi at times. They don't seem to mind!

    I bet they'd like some of Aisha's cookery too. Mmm-hmm! "So Bad, it's Good"-ctarlstew-png

In France we have a word for it : nanar.
We are the only who gave it a name and we took it from the XIXth century.
I like these kind of things but be carful : there are real ones and forgery.
Definition : A nanard is a movie which tries it's best to be good, the intentions are the same as every other, be good, be entertaining etc...
A nanard is movie that fails at being good, but somehow is bad in a way that make you laugh, that doesn't repugnate you.
Also a nanar still has some Genius moment and good ideas, and it's usually a lack of money/means of production that make it go the bad side. And if Lucky in the nanar case.

The forgery type is typically sharknado or this tokyo fish Something. It's a fake. It's a movie made to surf on some half-assed fashion that want to get the attention of the novice public. This is cynical counterfeit aiming only for easy money/attention and which is spitting on the wave they claim to be part of.
We call those "comédie nanardesque", translate is as you want.

The nanard wave (as the act of watching bad movie to have a good laugh without other goal) dates back to the 70S and some other phenomenons of that era.
Basically go study the topic it's a good piece of curiosity.
    Never overestimate mankind.

There are several movies, shows, and even games I would consider so bad, they're good but I think music takes the cake for this topic with me. There are some horrible songs out there and honesty suck but they suck so bad, they are enjoyable, to me at least. In the 90's a prime example of this is Barbie Girl. That song SUCKED but it sucked so much and was catchy, that most people enjoyed it. lol

This goes the same for saying something is so ugly, it is cute. I think it comes down to being something we know we normally don't like but because of the amounts of differences in said "thing", we end up liking it. If that makes sense? lol

I think it's possible to intentionally make a film designed to make you laugh in this fashion, but perhaps that could just be relegated to the "comedy" category
