    Why are emojis so popular?

I honestly do not get it. They are making a movie for these things. Why?
Why do people get so happy to use them? It is like virtual "feeling stickers" or something.

I use them myself but I really dread doing it anymore. It seems like it has been so overly exaggerated that they somehow lost value even though they really didn't have value to begin with. I am not talking about the standard ones we see on forums that are custom fit for the niche like:

But the regular yellow guys with all the other objects and animals.
Maybe I am being an old fart here but it is to the point where they just annoy me. lol

I think emojis became popular because you can use them as a "virtual" expression that you can insert in text and make it appear more lively than plain text, or just simply send it. I have to admit that I always use emoticons to express my reaction or feelings towards a particular discussion. I find it pretty cool but I don't overuse it though.

Yeah I can see that. It just seems like something people have become so obsessed with though. Maybe it is more so the adults and kids than the in between. I see a lot of older adults using like 10 crying laughter faces in a row when making fun of someone or something online and it is kind of cringe worthy lol

I started out hating them, thinking they were just silly. Later, I began to like them, since (as was discussed on this forum not too long ago) a lot can get lost in simple text. Text doesn't really convey 'tone' and things can easily be misunderstood and even get heated at times. This is especially true when people don't use proper punctuation as well. The use of all caps or lots of !!!!! can seem like 'yelling' even when something is typed in fun. Sarcasm is often lost on the recipient too, but then add a little sticking out tongue emoji and it's all good.

I'm an old fart though, so yeah. I'm of the semi-colon and parenthesis school of emojis.

Yeah I can see why they are used in text and all that but the thing that I didn't mention is the commercialization. I am seeing emoji shirts, plushies, decor, and even jewelry. I often wonder who actually buys this stuff if not for a very small child or a pet. I have a feeling they market mainly to people who will buy anything to feel trendy which is something I have never done. I like what I like and if it is "in style" at the time or not, I will still enjoy it.

Yeah, I have to laugh at most of that junk. None of it really interests me, but I can see other people buying some of it. You hit the nail. Some people will buy whatever is "in" at the time.

Wow, your last statement could have been written by me, ha ha. I couldn't have said it any better. I'm that way about everything from clothes to hairstyles to movies, games, and more. I've never been a keeping up with the Jones's type of person.

They seem popular because it's literally a shortcut for you to expression your emotions. Words can seem flat for the most part and emoticons help to make up for that to make the reader really understand what the sender means. I am a very dull texter so I rely on emoticons to salvage my conversations

Ironically though, is it making it harder for us to express true emotions? I was thinking about this the other day. You can't get your true emotion through a text so you rely on faces. Most of the type people type out "LOL" with a straight face or say something funny without even cracking a smile. Are we being trained to become robots or something!??

I'm not sure why they made the film to be honest because it looks awful. Not sure how it could even work really, what kind of plot could you do with a bunch of emojis? Most likely they thought they could make some quick money from it without spending a massive amount of money. I think the main reason emojis are popular is because it just lets you express a feeling or explain a message better sometimes. Sometimes it can be hard to understand if a certain message is sarcastic or the person is just joking with you, but using emojis alongside that message just makes it much easier to understand. The fact that all phones have the same emojis and that they are universal also helps
