    Family Legends

This thread is for old stories of your ancestors. I wanted to see interesting tales of your 'clan', like my family is from the O'Reilly clan of Ireland (though my surname is spelled differently), so I can tell my children more varieties of stories. You could use google/yahoo to look for the fables and post them here.

I'll start with one of my family stories: A lord offered his daughters hand if one of the suitors touched the wall of his castle, which had a moat (sp?), my ancestor couldn't swim.. so he had this stupidly amazing idea of chopping his hand off and throwing it, full force, at the wall of the castle. He won and got the girl.

    Re: Family Legends

That's an interesting tale. Alas, I know next to nothing about my ancestry. Using those family tree and records sites has proven pretty useless. Oh well.
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

Same here Mantis, I know almost nothing of my Dad's side of the family. However, I do know a bit more on my Mom's side.

    RE: Family Legends

I don't know much about my ancestry either

I do know that I have French blood on my mother's side, and that I'm about one eighth Jewish on my father's side. My dad likes looking into his family tree, and I was browsing the one he'd made when I found out he had a younger sister who died of hydrocephaelus when he was very young. I'm 25 and I'd never known she existed before a few months ago.

    RE: Family Legends

this thread got me to thinking, so i did a bit of digging in my family history. i found out that from my father's side i'm german and polish, and that from my mother's side i'm irish. i also found out two of my great uncles were in the D-Day invasion. so, i guess that's pretty cool.

I am told that there was a part of my great grandpa's hometown in Mexico that was haunted and anyone who went through that part of town had problems with the supernatural. My grandpa could walk through that part of town without any problem. For some reason the supernatural elements do not want to mess with him.

I've been told about my great grandfather coming to the USA if it counts! My great grandfather was dropped on his head as an infant and had a soft skull, so he had some brain damage. But alas, one day, he was still forced into the Russian army while they were just picking people off the streets. He was quite a man and was loved by all the his allies in the force, but his family was against him being in it, and like many other families, bribed the army to get him back. But the army told them straight out: we love him, so if we see him, we're taking him again. Thus, my great grandfather was forced to go to the USA to keep the Russian army from picking him back up.

And as a side note, I vote he was part tengu. Because his nose was so long~

I've learned that my great grandfather and his brother had a falling out while immigrating to the United States. It was apparently bad enough that they did not speak to each other for the rest of their lives. We didn't even know his side of the family existed until just recently. We only found out because they had the same last name they came over with; my great grandfather Americanized our last name.
