    Lightbulb Your Favourite Inventions

I thought of this thread idea when I got something from Amazon today. It's far too early for me to call it a favourite, but I finally decided to give a Thermos a shot. They never appealed in the past since I don't drink many hot drinks, but I got some ice cubes with it to put it to the test. (My flat's well insulated and it's been warm today for a change...) Sure enough, almost three hours later the ice cubes are still rattling about and my drink's still ice cold.

That's one hell of an invention. I think like with cola and Coke, Thermos is a brand name but has become the generic name for these flasks and they were invented in Scotland in the 19th century. That's some history.

Anyway, now it's your turn to blabber. Any favourites or your most practical item you've ever bought?

    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

A very silly one not many people would think of that I love using is my wrist rest. I don't know the history of it or anything but since I started working from home and spending a lot of time in front of a computer, it has been a helpful tool. I have very small wrists with medium size hands so when I don't use one, my hand and arm will start to ache pretty badly. The one I use is just a gray beanie one. It has those beans/beads in it.

    Guns.

I would also throw in grills and the deep fryer.

I have to admit, I hate guns because they scare me but I love the protection they provide to families and especially women. If a lady packs heat and knows how to use it, it don't matter how strong a male attacker is.

Ultimately a gun is just a tool that throws a rock really fast. Sure, that is dangerous as all heck & can kill the shit out of you...but it's a metal tube and almost everyone has it within their grasp to rationalize that and think about guns with a level head. Your views on them will also vary wildly depending on your exposure to them (not saying you weren't, just my experience having taken so many people -including foreigners- to shooting ranges). Like anything else, some people will take to them and others won't. At the end of the day it's just a tool, and if it allows law-abiding people to protect themselves I'm all for them.

That wasn't the point of this thread though, I just really like guns yet wanted to point out how valid your point of view was as well.
Outside of those already listed I'd say antibiotics are pretty cool, since I would have died several times over by now without them. Cars are great too, but i'm not a car enthusiast or anything. I just use them daily and my life as it is now wouldn't be possible without one.

I'm going to come off as a massive hipster but...typewriters. I like to write, and there's just something so...physical about typewriters. They're stylish, heavy, the clickty clacks, whirring belts, and bells all sound great, the texture of the freshly pressed ink is so aesthetic. It's one of the most fun ways to write anything.
    Life is demanding, without understanding.
