Are you "out of the loop"?

I noticed this years ago but only recently did it sink in that I don't know really any modern singers, actors, or general artists. I know some names and faces through memes but because I don't watch new movies or follow a lot of TV series and I only listen to a select kind of music, I don't know any famous people of this day and age. I also don't know famous people from YouTube or TikTok or any other social site outside of the small percentage I watch. I will hear something about someone famous and I am like "I have no idea who you are talking about". I don't know any fashion trends or anything either.

I am very much out of the loop and honestly, I can't say that is a bad thing for me. I think most people reach a certain age where they find what they like and just stick with it. Kids, teens, and 20 somethings focus on famous people a lot more it seems.

Yes, very relatable and it brings about some awkward moments in conversation. I have no fucking idea what people are talking about most of the time when they bring up music. I'm just some degenerate hipster who listens to the best of shit you've never heard of, leave me alone. Could be worse I suppose. I have a friend who literally never listens to music. Ever. She doesn't have any need to listen to music whatsoever. I've wondered how common that is in her home country, Japan, compared with the western world.

I'm just as bad with celebrities. Even the most popular ones, I'll only be able to recall what they look like (sometimes) but none of the news surrounding them or what they do. These things are why I fail at general knowledge quizzes. It irks me that my two strongest subjects (technology and video games) very rarely come up in any quizzes. That is despite both of them being booming industries.

But yeah, definitely, the worst question I've been asked is: "What kind of music (or which bands) do you like?" I have no idea how to answer.

I could not care less about modern celebrities and modern music these days. Whenever someone asks me what kind of music I like, I just reply: "City Pop". They are completely dumbfounded because they are not aware that it is not a modern trend but old stuff that died out with the 1980s.

All in all, being out of the loop is not a bad thing for me.

Yeah, I get that a lot with the music. When I tell people mainly listen to lofi, video game covers/remixes, and euphoric trance (Blackmill) most people don't know what the heck I am talking about. I will like songs from when I grew up, mostly alternative rock but I seldom ever listen to it anymore.
