    Maid Cafes

I'm sure you're aware of this by now, but Japan has these things called Maid Cafes where the staff are all female and dressed as maids (there are "host clubs" as well, which are the male equivalent and service a female clientele). I am drinking a lot tonight after a particularly hard day of work and thinking back on my evenings going to Maid Cafes when I lived in Japan. That said, I never went to the big brand name ones like Maidreamin' that made me cringe too much to go inside. They do all this really fake stuff like sprinkle "magic" on your food and make you say "magic words" to place your order...it had this creepy level of fantasy that I was never down with. Let me clue you in on a well-kept secret:

In the backstreets of Akihabara, there's a small Maid Cafe that's in a literal basement called JAM Akihabara. They don't do the whole fake cutesy talk or anything, it's just a pretty regular cafe/bar with girls in maid outfits and it was heavenly. There were these Japanese guys I would hang out with, Daichi and Ryuji...they didn't speak English and I don't speak Japanese but somehow we got along and could laugh at anything together despite the language barrier. I really miss those nights having maids bring me beer after beer & my friends chainsmoking in that basement. It was beyond cozy. It was the only maid cafe I could go to and look my wife in the face afterwards. It pains me that there's no real equivalent in the USA aside from Hooters, which even then has somewhat of a sexual connotation & it far more pricey.

I guess for this to really be a thread I need to pose some kind of question, so: would you visit a Maid Cafe? Does the whole Japanese French-maid thing work for you?

I think I had a slightly better experience than most because my buddy Daichi was dating one of the maids there but he would never tell me which one. I later found out that was because she wasn't actually there because he got her pregnant. Another thing I didn't realize was that one of the maids is the "head maid" so to speak. I always wondered why the cutest one never served anything but would still come to our table and talk with us for a while. Turns out it's because he knew her through his girlfriend and she was the "boss". I have Stage 4 inoperable yellow fever so perhaps I'm the only one with any interest but this topic should be fair game on an anime site I think.

Searching on google now, it amazes me that the boss maid even has an anime rendition for promotional material. She's the one with the long hair, although the photo doesn't really do her justice it's one of the few I could find.

Damn it, Zem, you're supposed to save that shit for our get togethers! ;p

Anywho, getting on topic, that's a really cool experience. I can't imagine how you can become bros with someone who can't understand a single word you say but from the sounds of it, you made it work. You're buddy is a lucky son of a bitch for dating a maid cafe employee. The closest I got to a maid cafe experience was one that was held at an anime convention a couple years back. The way it worked was very much the overly cutsey "say magic words" shit that you described which making a heart sign with my hands and chanting some bubbly crap was...awkward to say the least. There was no alcohol, just stuff like cookies and we played shit like Jenga. My friend's cousin got branded the king of games so that was kind of amusing. I'd try a actual japanese cafe once just to try it out. I'd probably would prefer the one you'd frequent just because it'll probably be a billion times less awkward, not to mention it sounds more like a bar than an actual cafe which would be more up my alley.

Oh, and the anime rendition of the boss maid...10/10 would waifu.

Don't worry, I have plenty of beer leftover for this weekend.

As for friends with a language barrier...lots of pointing at things and saying a single word like a caveman to get our points across. Lots of times he would just look excited and motion for me to follow him & I wouldn't even know where we were going but we'd just roast people we saw on the street and he did speak a LITTLE English but he only picked it up from what he would read in League of Legends. When Daichi introduced himself to me he pointed to himself and said: "Daichi. #1 Toxic Player in JP Server". We would mostly just argue over which gravure models were the best & show eachother anime screenshots to ask if the other had watched that one. Daichi and Ryuji were college dropouts, so they weren't your overly formal and polite salaryman-types. These guys enjoyed Asahi beer & Ai Shinozaki magazines as much as I do.

As for Western anime convention maid cafes...I have to give you some credit for going in on that. I've seen them but I couldn't do it, the cringe forcefield kept me away. I can't even handle the proper Japanese ones with the magical girl act. The girls looking good is all I need, I don't need to participate in the show.

As a woman, I prefer this kind of service over Hooters. I mean, at least they keep things cute and classy. Hooters is all about boobs, legs, and tips. It is funny, there are things like this that are done better in Japan yet they have vending machines filled wuith used panties. It is a real toss up! lol (I believe they got rid of these vending machines at this point though)

What a coincidence, that's what men are all about too! It makes perfect sense that Hooter's wouldn't be your favorite kind of place, and in fact the trashyness of it even turns me away slightly as well, but your preference is perfectly understandable as a lady.

Thinking back on it, I've only been to Hooters twice. The first time was my friend's 14th birthday party and I cringe so hard thinking back on how we 5 or 6 boys must have looked doing an awful job sneaking looks at asses and down shirts. Girls our age at least manage to hide their interest in the opposite sex to an extent. Boys think they do, but around age 12 - 14 it's like a borderline disorder. The 2nd time was in Japan with my wife because she was curious after going to one in the USA. Yes, there are several Hooters locations in Japan.

The most interesting middle-ground between Hooters and Maid Cafes is the MASSIVE "Girl's Bar" or "Snack Bar" industry. There are tons of names for it, but what I'm referring to are the places where part of the price of admission (and added expanse on drinks) is to have an attractive girl sit at your table and talk to you. every single one of these places has a strict no-contact rule and 99% of them follow it. These places are so omnipresent in their culture that I estimate well over half of working men go there at least once a month and it's not seen as weird at all. I've never heard of anyone's girlfriend or wife being upset about it and very few guys have any shame about attending those places. I've even known girls who have worked there and they all tell me it's good money and they felt safe.

They're definitely freaks as well, just in a different way than us. Their Hooter's restaurants might not be as skanky, but I bet you've seen dozens of F-cup high school Freshman anime girls get all their holes filled by tentacles whether or not you intended to search for that. Their perversion has saturated the internet & anime-themed places & events in real life. (not complaining btw, just making the point that "it's a toss up" is putting it nicely)

I never saw one of the used panty machines and nobody knew what I was talking about. I'd heard the story as well, but I'm starting to wonder if it's an urban legend or if it was real and just blown way out of proportion in our news. Maybe it was available somewhere for like 1 month as a special promotion.

From maids to used panties in just 3 posts. This must be a new record.

    Wow. Cool post.

The way you describe the cafe in the basement reminds me of the anime:

    Hinamatsuri (link below)

    Hinamatsuri - MyAnimeList.net

    My experience:
In April 2019, my wife and I went to Japan for only 3 days from China. We we basically in Tokyo and we saw a lot of the local sites, but not all (we decided we need to go back).

We did stop in Akihabara and I loved it there!

I was surprised on how many sex related themed stores there were.

But the anime stuff was cool. I really wanted to see an idol concert.

My wife and I did go to a maid Cafe and being April the theme was Easter and bunnies. So the girl wore bunny ears and it smelled like "smarties" candy, ya'know the cheap kind you got in 5th grade.

Overall, my wife and I enjoyed it. The wait was long, sitting chairs and tables are way smaller then a normal restaurant, the cups were small, we couldn't take pictures of the staff, and if we wanted a photo we had to pay in advance.... so that was surprising to me.

The food was actually not to bad. Portions were okay, but for me being an American, once I got out, I walked around to the nearest KFC. The maid would do this little cute smile and hand gesture, while making a heart, and saying something in Japanese - my wife liked it.

My wife won't let me go to a maid Cafe by myself in the future.

I have seen pictures of them and people who have visited Japan showing them but yeah like you, most people never heard of them even those who live in Japan. Maybe it is like an underground fetish thing now? Or like you said, just an urban legend. Who knows. I am inclined to believe there was at least on in operation, even if it was for only one month based off of anime alone lol

I would try out one why not. That and a normal Cofee shop.
