Have you ever had "online beef" with anyone?

I think it is fair to say we live in the day and age where you are bound to find someone who doesn't like you online or vice versa. While I tend to get along with most people, I have had a few run-ins with some trolls that became annoying rather fast. I think they simply didn't like me because other people did, which was pretty petty. I am not a part of the forum that happened on anymore, thankfully.

Have you ever had some kind of "beef" with someone online? What was it about?

Yeah, quite a few although most of them were one-sided (going both ways, depending on which instance we're talking about). Even 2 or 3 on this website when I was new, but those people have either stopped posting or we've settled our differences.

A few notable ones: This one didn't go on for long, but I used to go on neoGAF for game news/leaks about 5-6 years ago. I didn't know it at the time, but that site has a NOTORIOUSLY strong left-leaning bias. I went on there posting like I do here, and exploded a thread. The thread was about some woman who worked at a game development company and she was griping (in the form of a hit-piece news article) how the higher-ups didn't take her suggestions seriously and she believed that was because she was a woman. While that may be true (I don't believe so, however), her ideas were awful and ran counterpoint to the way games are developed. She was recommending massive gameplay-altering changes in direction that would set the game back by months if not years, late-development game engine changes, and pushing for SJW topic inclusion in the game that didn't need to be there. On top of that, her position as an entry-level coder didn't really give her the right to make those suggestions to higher-ups in the first place, she was many levels removed from the people she wanted to influence. I suggested that she perhaps had a difficult time because of how insufferable she must be to work alongside when she insists everything must go her way, and BOY DID THEY NOT APPRECIATE THAT.

2nd was a girl on youtube. I saw girl because we were both roughly 16-ish at the time. Back in the day, I was 2nd on youtube for Majora's Mask walkthroughs after some massive NormalBoots channel, but was plenty small enough to interact with each of my fans. This was 10 years ago so I didn't think twice about giving my Skype to someone in my PMs who wanted to talk to me about how I make my videos. We chatted by Skype and Phone several times, then she started telling me all kinds of real-life stuff. She loved to go wandering in the woods and sit on a big rock where a Shadow of the Colossus-sized white ghost wolf would visit her. At this point I realized she was crazy or trying to get into some sort of roleplay that I just didn't have time for, and told her that I didn't believe her. She went NUTS and spammed my videos with dislikes, hate comments, etc. for weeks.

3rd was a guy in a game fan translation project who ratted us out to Kotaku. The article is still up with screenshots of private Skype where we were working on the game in semi-secret. Our fan translation group's leader received a Cease and Desist as well as signed an NDA about the C&D when a certain company decided to release the game in English officially. He shared that with us to explain the changes that were gonna occur within our team (breaking the NDA, bad move but i appreciate him letting us know). The leaker included that in his leak to Kotaku and put this guy I had a ton of respect for in hot water. I don't like the leaker OR Kotaku who sensationalized their story with plenty of clickbait and outright lies because the guy was under NDA and couldn't defend himself on the topic.

Scary stuff. Companies are super serious about protecting their IPs these days, especially when it comes to video games. I don't know if it's because they sense the industry tanking and want to maximize profits on existing assets or because piracy has become so prolific, or both, but something happened over the last decade that caused these companies to ramp up. I don't remember it being like this in the past.

Well...in this particular case, the company had decided to release the game in English in the West. Of course, we didn't know this but our release date lined up with E3 when they were going to announce it so they flipped out and sort of leaked the fact that it was getting officially localized by blowing up our group in the media.

Well, with that Kotaku debacle, at least you got 15 minutes of fame out of the deal. That thing about Neogaf doesn't surprise me since it's always been a cesspool of self-righteous SJW douchbags. I can only imagine just how much worse Resetera is.

As for examples myself, I'm brilliant when it comes to avoiding online squabbles since I tend to keep a low-profile online. I got into some petty pissing wars during the very early days of the internet (Which make me cringe when I think about it) but beyond that I never had a big blow-out or anything like that.

Zemekis: You told me a fair bit about that translation fiasco. Sounded quite metal. I'm surprised you were even on NeoGAF to begin with. It's the polar opposite of how you are now.

And yeah... I've got a few tales. One was not too long ago on the forum. After I thought I'd come to an agreement with one guy to stop talking, I get contacted out of the blue. If you dislike me, why are you still contacting me? Bugger off.

Another from the Outlaw Star fanbase... eleven years ago. Actually it relates to this forum as a whole. The forum outlawstar.net was a cesspit. I just didn't know it at the time. I posted pretty normal questions about Outlaw Star. Turns out it had stopped being about Outlaw Star years before then.

Several members and even moderators tried to harass me, dox me and contact my girlfriend, etc. Just because I asked about merchandise. That was the year I first watched through Outlaw Star. I liked it enough to want to make a website. I hadn't considered a forum, but in the end I told them I'd make a forum better than theirs. I'm not saying OSN is the best forum in the world, but look at it and look at theirs now. (If it'll even connect.) Or even most of the last decade, a ghost town. Some of their members have signed up here to troll. Not gonna lie, I don't feel bad about banning their asses!

I've worked with a famous YouTuber. It was short-lived, but I was pretty much the lead moderator. His accounts were hacked. The main guy behind this certainly had some beef with me. He tried to dox me but didn't get far. I didn't think it was worth the effort so I moved on. That's the end of that.

Somebody on Steam who I had accepted a friend request from started to become quite... obsessed, I guess. I didn't mind playing some games regularly. Eventually sent me some photos of a decent-looking girl. Yeah, it only took a few more until I saw right through that. It wasn't trolling. He was attracted to me, but I don't swing that way. So somebody from OSN who also talked to the person (under the impression that he was a girl) starting calling me transphobic for not reciprocating those feelings because apparently I might have done so if I hadn't found out the person was male anyway. No, it's more about being lied to for months.

I had quite a big argument with some indie developer, back when I was more into indie development. I might have met him if I'd gone to an indie conference. This guy was a real cunt and eventually worked with James Rolfe, making the Angry Video Game Nerd game series. Despite all that crap, I don't hold it against him and think that the games are well made.

Last one I can think of at the moment. Back when I played Doom a lot a decade ago (I was quite skilled, not anymore!) and created my own clan, the Blue Soldiers of Death, I had a few enemies. My clan was pretty popular, I think gaining over fifteen active members. (Some registered on OSN, back when it was known as Outlaw Star UK. That includes Baron, one of our top posters. Very much a war buddy!) We had beef with a clan called WINNER. You can tell from that alone it was full of douchebags. I recall working with another clan who also didn't like them. It was a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" scenario. I can't remember what happened in the end.

I wasn't much different at the time, i just used GAF to browse the thread titles for leaks & news. I didn't read people's commentary on the topics, and this was probably my 2nd or 3rd post there overall thst got me shitcanned. I am a lot stricter now than i was back then i suppose? I refuse to click on plebbit for example. I've been on a 100% blackout on that site for 3+ years now. GAF is going on 6. Resetera NEVER

I never understood the argument of saying "you're transphobic because you reject trans people sexually". The only people who likely would not have an issue with a trans person is either another trans person or a bi-sexual. I would not date a biological man trying to be a woman and I would not date a biological female trying to be a man. Most people feel the same way. This has nothing to do with fear. It has everything to do with attraction and sexuality, something they of all people should know you have no control over. The types that push this stuff would likely be okay with some middle-aged man dating a 12-year-old.

On that obsessive note... I have had a few people get a bit weird with me online. One of a woman (I think, lesbian) and the other was a guy. Both from the same forum. The woman had some kind of obsession with me and would often make fun of me for my looks without even knowing what I looked like or anything about me. It was really weird. She targeted a few others the same way. The guy... Well, he was just all kinds of weird. He would send me DMs about us being soulmates and stuff and the one time I expressed how happy I was that my boyfriend at the time got me something as a gift and he flipped out and started calling me all kinds of nasty names.
