Pen Pals and The New Generation

I honestly wasn't sure if this should go in Clyde's Bar or Blue Heaven, but it doesn't seem like a super heavy topic so...Meh. Anyway, onto the topic:

Who here remembers pen pals? And by that, I mean actually writing a letter back and forth with either an old friend or a total stranger. It's not very common nowadays- mostly just writing isn't common I think. I rarely see a need to pick up a pen and write something down, especially something long. But I still often crave that sense of a secret friend through the long letters on paper. Is that my need for something old fashioned, or is the internet not enough?

Nowadays I do have a penpal, sort of...We treat email the same as letters. But we write long emails, constantly responding when we can which is sometimes weeks apart. Does it count as a penpal though? Do you still have penpals?

This is the stuff this topic is made of: Letters and just generally the lack of needing to write by hand [which is good for me, since my doctor's handwriting is better than mine].

I wish I I had this relationship with someone. I think it could develop one of the most deepest connections in your life. I have a close friend that I constantly talk with every other day so on some level this counts, maybe? haha). The last time I had a pen pay was a child living in Nigeria and I was in the third grade. We both had horrible spelling but would send each other pictures and write funny stories. This was a tradition that my third and fourth grade teachers made us follow.

    I've never had a penpal.

I just googled it though and there are websites where you can find penpals, but it wouldn't be as exciting writing to someone when you can just message them through the website.

I wouldn't mind having a Japanese or French penpal because they could help me to improve my language skills. I would think about volunteering to write to prisoners too. Although, that might be a bit scary.

I didn't think of joining a website, but indeed, it's easy enough to just message people nowadays that you don't really need to write a letter. I bet you could find Japanese, french or even prison penpals just through email alone. I once had an unintentional air force e-pal because he kept emailing me instead of someone on the force o.O

I never had the chance to even use letters, let alone mail a total stranger on a regular basis. Closest thing I have to a Penpal is someone I met on MyAnimeList. We sent PMs to each other on almost a weekly basis, discussing anime, manga, our lives, etc... I later added him on facebook and we started talking nearly daily xD, but anyway I guess that's as close as it gets.

I did write letters but I just exchange it with my friends lol. Does that count? I would love to have a penpal in a country like Somalia or Mexico. Imagine having the first hand stories about how they live their lives there. That would be cool.
