    Phobias

As a complete 180 from the fun being had in the Coronavirus meme thread, i wanted to ask if anyone else here has a legitimate phobia. I'm not talking about being scared of something. Anyone would be scared if they ran into a ghost and most people are spooked by spiders...that doesn't mean it's a severe and/or irrational fear.

Mine is squid. Particularly giant squid. This extends to deep water and most sea creatures, but I can't go claiming hundreds of phobias so i'll discuss my big main one.
When I was 3 my Dad took me to the St. Louis zoo in Missouiri. There's this 3 story tall glass building with an "exotic" animal theme. The front door opens into a hallway with a life-sized stingray hanging from the ceiling. Okay cool. There were live tarantulas in an enclosure. Super venomous snakes. Fine. Then the room opens up into this big atrium and there are 1:1 sized plaster models of sea creatures hanging from the ceiling. I saw a hammerhead shark, neato! Great white, wow cool! Then this pink thing that curved upwards. Wtf is that?? I followed it with my eyes and it lead to the body of the worst thing I had ever seen. I ran out of the building and most of the way to the Zoo gate before my dad caught up with me.

I had a concept of what a giant squid was from the cover of my 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea book, but i didn't think they were real! At that point I was already fucked up for life, but when we returned home i had my Dad throw away the book for me. Unfortunately my Dad is a troll and jumpscared me with the book, yelling "SQUID!". I panicked for nearly an hour. My room at the time had a nautical theme with a life preserver, bouy, rope, and a bell from the deck of a ship. The room was painted deep blue. Needless to say i moved across the hall within a day or two of returning home from Missouiri.

If you want to see it, just google "St. Louis zoo squid". I would post a picture, but i'd probably need someone to turn off my phone or close the browser window for me afterwards because i'd be shaking too hard to do it myself (it's happened). Since then, i only take showers, no baths. I only go into the ocean up to my ankles. I won't even stick my hands into murky water in my kitchen sink. I wasn't scared of a monster under my bed as a kid, i was scared of tentacles coming up and wrapping around me. I even avoid looking at my ceiling fan at night because it's too much like an octopus or something. The nightmares i've had for 24 years could provide material for 100 horror flicks. I'll never be able to go to an aquarium again or take my future kids to one, as much as i'd like to. My parents forced me through a few of them despite my fears and that made things a lot worse. Possibly the worst being a trip to the Museum of Natural History in NYC. There's a bigass Ocean room with hundreds of plaster models & a Blue Whale hanging from the ceiling. I went into the center of the room so I could be as far as possible from the models on the wall...WELL it just so happens that there was an exhibit in the center of the room. From afar it looked like a long metal box or table. As it turns out, it was a giant squid frozen in a block of ice. That was a supremely bad day.

I'm typing this all up on my phone because I can't sleep, but now my hairs are all standing on end just thinking about it. Do any of you have a phobia? Don't be afraid to share it, mine's pretty stupid and i typed it out in full detail so everyone else can be confident in sharing theirs if they have one. I'm interested ro hear what yours might be because with the nature of phobias it could be anything.

Fascinating thread idea and a fascinating post. That sucks. Yeah, that's very much irrational as the kraken was said to be two hundred times the size of a giant squid. Nevertheless, I think even the toughest of men would shit their pants if they encountered a giant squid. So I guess this isn't a good time for Starwind55 to interject with his tentacle hentai collection.

As for me, it's an odd one and sort of a long story, so I'll try to shorten it. As many of you know, with having epilepsy I've been dealing with seizures for a long time now. Fortunately, for the past few months and thanks to brain surgery I haven't had one. Even if things stay this way there are scars that will always remain. One of them would be my phobia of yellow artificial lighting in the evening or night, so a bit more specific than a fear of the dark.

On numerous occasions I woke up in dark rooms with blinking yellow lights (trains for instance), having no idea who I was, where I was, being completely paralysed with terror. I wouldn't take late trains anymore. The fear of that happening again is just too much. I usually avoid going out to shops outside of daylight hours. Who knows, maybe I have PTSD from all of these experiences but I'm not interested in seeking yet another label.

    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

I have periods of hypochondria. Any new sensation or change in my body causes me to go into a panic and I will sometimes spend hours a day trying to rule out severe illnesses. It can be pretty bad. Outside of that, I am afraid of depth and height. So deep water freaks me out as well as great heights. I will get dizzy and sick to my stomach from both. I know how to swim but still, deep water where I can't see the bottom freaks me out. Also, the moon. I had nightmares as a kid where the moon crashed into the earth. I was never able to finish Majora's Mask because of this fear, as silly as it sounds. If the moon appears large in the sky, it really freaks me out.

I had intended to get out in front of that comparison in my original post, but it was getting tiresome typing on my phone in the dark so I left it out. I'm not bothered by cartoon or low budget hentai depictions of squid. for example, Squidward from Spongebob doesn't bother me at all (lol). No drawing or animation can quite match the alien, soul-less look of an actual squid. You'd think that an accurate plaster model of a real squid would be less worrying than a squid creature raping someone in anime, but I assure you I enjoy one much more than the other and Starwind is still welcome to PM me his collection and I'll cross-reference it with mine.

I think yours is extra valid because it stems from a genuine medical condition that's quite dangerous to you. Are the lightbulbs in your apartment a whitish hue? All the lights in my house are "soft white" aka a warm yellow. At my parents' house we had more of the whitish ones, but my dad always called them "alien autopsy" lights because of the way they made rooms look like a doctor's office which tend to have white lighting.

Haha, it's amazing how different people can be. While you didn't say you hate Majora's Mask because of it or anything, I think it's common knowledge on the forums by now that my favorite game next to Final Fantasy VIII is Majora's Mask. In fact, I was the top guy on YouTube for MM videos back before the "Ben Drowned" creepypasta came along and drew tons of larger channels and normies. Fun fact, the director had a similar dream to yours and that's where the idea came from! Instead of a nightmare making me scared to play MM, my first nightmare with any video game elements was ABOUT Majora's Mask. Skullkid, in particular. We had just moved to Pennsylvania and a friend of mine lent me his copy of the game. I played it like a madman. Our house was so new that the next door house hadn't even been built yet. There were construction materials and concrete pipes, however laid out in the lot next to ours. In my dream, Skullkid lived in that maze of concrete pipes and would look up at my bedroom window with his mask on, trying to get me to come outside and "play". Rather than scaring me off the game, I think that's what spurred on my obsession. A game had never resonated with me that much or caused me to feel such a deep emotion, even if that emotion was fear and uneasiness.

I could go on for hours about this so I'll cut it there for now. Eventually I'll need to make a MM thread or go back to the one I created if I already did. I have a lot to say about it.

Bullshit. Tentacle hentai is always appropriate for every situation ever.

Getting serious here, my big phobias are spiders or more specifically tarantulas. I'm fine with smaller house spiders or daddy long legs but if it's big and hairy like those fuckers then it puts the fear of God into me. I don't know how I developed this phobia as I never had any encounter with them or anything like that but every time I see it, it's like it awakens some deep, primal fear within me. Hell, beating OG Resident Evil 2 was tough for me because of those fucking big tarantulas that you fight in the sewers. Nothing in the game scared me except those fucking things. Hell, even their death animations freaked me out. The weird thing is, the spiders in other games don't bother me but for some reason the ones from Resident Evil do. I guess it's because, even by PS1 standards, their movements were eerily realistic.

Another phobia I have are elevators. I know this might sound strange but this was based on an incident that happened when I was a small child. My older brother used to be on the hockey team and we were staying at a hotel as his game was out of town. We were in the elevator to get to the lobby to check out and when the elevator door opened, all of a sudden, a completely different set of doors closed and we were stuck in the elevator for like another five minutes or so. Short amount of time but it scared me shitless as a kid. My little self probably gave my mother hell because after that, I always wanted to take the stairs instead of the elevator for fear of being trapped. It took me years to get over it but even now if I'm on an elevator and if it takes even slightly longer than normal for the doors to open, I tense up.

The game is great, up until the moon starts getting too big and it freaks me out. I could only go through it so many times. I would end up quitting right before the time ran out lol I might be able to go back and play it now, I mean it wouldn't be as intimidating now that I am grown up. I still prefer Ocarina of Time but to be fair, I never fully finished Majora's Mask.
