    RE: Outlaw Star vs Firefly

I should probably mention that I actually really enjoyed Firefly, although some of the similarities with Outlaw Star do irk me a bit. But then, being space-westerns, I suppose they're gonna have a few things in common.

Imitation is the best form of flattery, they say.

    RE: Outlaw Star vs Firefly

I was originally introduced to Firefly through an AMV that combined the audio from the trailer for Serenity, the Firefly wrap-up movie, and Outlaw Star. The comedy, the wit, the dialogue, mashed up so well that I had to see what the source material was like.

Lo and behold, Firefly became one of my favorite shows ever.

On an Outlaw Star forum, I see some of you are quick to jump on the "rip-off" bandwagon and I think it's warranted. River (who is pretty much Melfina for all intents and purposes) has an introduction scene that had to have been lifted from Outlaw Star, despite what the creator, Joss Whedon, has said. But while there are a couple of similarities, I think the two series are VASTLY different.

In Firefly, there's a huge emphasis on character. Not just River, though her mystery drives the major plot, but there's a concentration on character development that I think Outlaw Star lacks. Everyone has their moment to shine, and after watching all fourteen episodes and the movie, I honestly felt like I lived on that ship. You get to like virtually everyone.

If any "second season" of Outlaw Star was produced, I really want it to take some cues from Firefly. That character development, that focus on the life of an Outlaw, and perhaps more odd-jobs and what not could really benefit Outlaw Star.

That said, I think everyone should check out Firefly. Being familiar with Outlaw Star only helped me love this show more, and they were both shows that ended way too soon.

Firefly has 14 episodes + 1 movie that acts as the "finale". You can definitely buy it on DVD and Blu-Ray and whatever else.

They definitely have their strengths, I think Firefly is a bit stronger in characterization, but the stories in Firefly are bomb-diggity GOOD. It's possible to be a fan of both, ya know. ;)

Not familiar with Firefly but at the moment, still a newbie to Outlaw. When I've seen a few more episodes I'll have to check out that trailer again. However, I personally am not bothered by it as I like similar shows, as long as they aren't direct ripoffs UNLESS they play a good homage, then it's ok.

    RE: Outlaw Star vs Firefly

    Hello

I came to this site reading the article on the Outlaw Star sequels, dunno why just was searching on a whim . Good article btw, thanks for the read. I felt compelled to create an account to reply to this thread though. I think Firefly and Outlaw Star are not really that similar minus the general sort of Western Space theme. The similarities between River and Melfina and mostly just in the beginning and the whole sleeping girl thing is not new imo. Not only is it not new in a general sense it wasn't first in OLS for cryo/scifi aspect either. When you throw males in the same situation it broadens it even more.

Also that trailer, it's pretty horrible. It describes them as hereos and while that is a likely end scenario for the series (although in a different sense, more of a toppling of government than save the universe) they are not any of the sort for the duration of the first season except for going from planet to planet.

    @ Marty Kirra

The movie is actually not really a finale, it's sort of a spinoff. Sort of because it's the same thing but it is completely separate of the series and also was meant to be a trilogy (which is not going to happen but v0v).

Firefly is a great series though and I recommend all watch it At least the first couple of episodes.

    RE: Outlaw Star vs Firefly

Love Firefly, the two show are similar, but they are different. OLS is very action orientated and more Asian themed with western splashed in. Firefly has a bit more drama, character development, more post American Civil War/Western frontier themed and dare I say a better soundtrack. The OLS ship for me felt like it was a means to an end and Serenity felt more like a home, but the ship basically was their home anyway. The similarity I saw in Firefly that I consider a homage to OLS was a naked River in a metal box. What's in the box?! What is in ****ing the box, Kevin Spacey?!
We are all insane, we just act normal for the sake of others.
