RE: If there were a sequel, what would suck? What would win? (Potential spoilers)

Gene hit most of the major points. Here are some of my concerns though:

What would suck: If the animation team resorts to a generic anime style on top of cheap usage of CGI. I can't take an anime seriously if it wasn't made to be awesome!

What would win: If Leilong made a Cameo.

RE: If there were a sequel, what would suck? What would win? (Potential spoilers)

Thanks Som, and another part I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I had a pet peeve about one more thing. It's actually not really based on the plot line or what the characters do, but how they look. I don't know if this bothered any of you but I was mad at how the art style changed from episode to episode. Like how one episode would have have a really nice art style and was clean looking, while the next episode afterwards would have a completely different look to it. Stick to one art style for the entire series and deal with it!

Here's an example of what I am talking about:
If there were a sequel, what would suck? What would win? (Potential spoilers)

    Compared to...

If there were a sequel, what would suck? What would win? (Potential spoilers)

And they do this quite frequently in the series. Personally, I think the art style of the sequel (IF they make one) should stick to the style of the second picture in this post (which is also my avatar). I think everyone looked a lot more clean and polished; it just looks like they took more time to work on it than some of the other episodes.

Totally agree, the second picture is definitely better than the first. Maybe there have been different people working on it from time to time? Should totally stick to the second style, yep.

That's exactly how it worked. They had different artists and they were probably working very long hours. The fact they had to reuse (although it isn't very noticeable) a lot of the animation suggests their budget and time constraints weren't so good. Which episodes are these two screen captures from? And yeah, I didn't really notice Gene's change in appearance much, but I must admit in that example it's pretty drastic.
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

I can't remember what episode the first picture came from but I know for certain that the second one is from Episode 8: Forced Departure.

I agree with Somasol. The art style should look clean and crisp, but I think in a way that's vintage, rather than modern. Modern anime really bugs me, it all looks a little TOO clean, overly polished. Code Geass as an example. Also, CGI should stay the hell out.

Well, technically, a lot of modern anime regardless of 3D use "CGI" to my knowledge, since a lot of them are digitally produced with vector graphics, which are animated digitally and then rendered. So it's hard to define CGI, but as far as its conventional meaning of being 3D, yeah, usually I don't like that.

Yeah, 3D CGI is what I meant. Although, there WAS a bit of it that blended in very well in episode 24 when they enter the Leyline.

So perhaps if that were the case, I wouldn't be bothered by it.

RE: If there were a sequel, what would suck? What would win? (Potential spoilers)

Yeah, I thought the 3D aspect helped emphasise the mysterious nature of the Leyline, and as you pointed out it wasn't too noticeable. The first anime series (aside from Pokémon which I didn't watch for long) that I watched was Zoids: Chaotic Century, a 1999 anime which used 3D CGI a lot for the mechs, but it would have no doubt increased the production costs a lot due to the complexity of the animation/multiple camera angles if it was done the old-fashioned way. So it's not always a bad thing.

I'm kinda derailing the thread here though, so back to the topic! Gene's always been a hero (if a bit of an anti-hero on occasion), but it would suck if Melfina was frequently a damsel in distress in a sequel, or rather, if she was the only woman in Gene's life. Sure, love's great and all, but Gene has always been and always will be a slimy and scummy pervert. Save the romance for Harry, who no doubt would introduce usefulness in Melfina in a sequel since he'd probably continue his love quest.

RE: If there were a sequel, what would suck? What would win? (Potential spoilers)

Yeah it's definitely hard to say where it would go with them. Because to me at least, when I watch an anime and see that there is tension between two characters (in terms of romance) they wait until the end to let it actually flourish or disband it. When you let the two characters go into a relationship, it loses it's *stimulus* of yearning to see it. So as Mantis said, it would be difficult to just make Gene become faithful completely, yet would it be right for him to stay who he has been and be unfaithful to Melfina?

I really don't care either or because I am not one who watches shows in general for romantic relationships or anything of that nature; however, Anime's tend to value the art of making people want two characters to be together. And when the two start to become close, they repel, then they will come closer again, and repel again.

And yes, Harry probably would need to come and become not just a villain again, but motivation for those two to stay together. It's sort of how it worked in the series, Harry underneath kept Gene on his toes for watching out for Melfina.
