I probably can't commit to a group watch anyway, although I can hop in and out since I've seen the whole show anyway. Doesn't matter if I miss a week. You asked me somewhere else if I could set aside time for 5 eps per weekend, but as I said it would need to be a few nights "per week" not weekend...my weekends are more or less FUBAR until mid-June due to family, friends, and family friends graduating high school & undergrad. I've got a slew of graduations and parties to go to, on top of dog training classes and shopping/laundry/the usual shiz.

If this is something you and I are doing, we can just play it by ear and knock out episodes when we both have time. I will still make an effort to join if/when the group watches in August! It's my favorite anime or TV show in general, so I'll re-watch it for the rest of my life.

Ah, did I? Yeah, I can understand all of that. This is difficult to arrange when there's three or more people. I'm okay with "playing by ear", but perhaps it would be a good idea to do that weekend get-together and you can just drop in if you can make it. Most weekends I can find a time that works for Starwind, so doing it this way you'll at least get to watch some of the episodes with us, and you can watch the others when you get the chance in your own time.

And we can still watch the series in August too! I realise that might be overkill for other fans though. I've gone through the episodes so many times when editing the "Outlaw Star Clips" and the music project that watching the series has become second nature. Perhaps more (new?) members would want to watch it in August...

Is this something we could put out an email/notice/system PM out to users who have been active in the last year or so to join in on?
It'd be really fun to have a bigass group watch OLS together.

Whoa this is pretty cool. I definitely think Zemekis has the right idea. I'd also maybe give a few weeks heads up so people can work their schedules around it?

We actually already started this. On Saturday night we did episodes 1-6, but yeah, we'll find a way to let people know in August.

As Mantis stated, we have already started with this, but will probably be doing another watch-through in August. There is a (slightly misleading) thread over in the Gaming sub-forum called Monthly gaming get together that we generally use to plan things like this. Ironically, most of our get togethers are weekly these days and consist of watching anime/movies instead of gaming.

You mentioned about a Discord for these sorts of things. I believe a Discord was attempted for this forum or its now-defunct Facebook page members to communicate, but either participation wasn't high enough or the discussions going on there were so off-topic that there was no point. That was before my time, so I don't really know the reasons why it isn't around anymore, but what I do know is that a fair number of us don't really like discord and prefer to make longer more thought out posts than instant-message. In my case I can say I'd never be able to keep up with an instant messaging app/software for discussing Outlaw Star and probably wouldn't be here talking to you guys today if it weren't for the forum nature of this site. Something about posting on a forum just helps with the 90's anime vibe too, doesn't it?

I tested the waters with Discord but ultimately decided against it. This community has never had a great deal of activity. In 2011 (I think) when the site was known as Outlaw Star UK, I added a custom chat room to the site. However, I only opened it at the weekend. This was a good option. It was fun, but the thing is, when activity can sometimes be dangerously low, having a chat room can divert activity even further. After all, why use a forum when a chat room is instant and easy? I didn't want it to become a replacement and I'd say members were mostly happy about my decision.

I first received a Discord suggestion before I had actually tried Discord. I've now used Discord for a year or two. It's not a bad chat platform, but I can't enforce that "weekend chat" rule there. I would like to add something like that if members would enjoy it and it was feasible, but unfortunately it's just not feasible if this forum's gonna keep on living. The only solution I can think of is installing an independent chat room like in 2011/2012 which is only opened temporarily.

I wouldn't be opposed to an independent chat if enough people get on it. It'd be nice to have conversations in real time and just shoot the shit. I guess we'd have to see just how many people would use it to see if it's something worth pursuing.

You know, Zemekis does bring up a good point. We haven't game to the point where there's not much of a point in calling that thread the monthly gaming get together. Perhaps it might be a good idea to just update it as a general get together/meetup thread?

I doubt it would see enough use to be worth Mantis' time getting that set up, but I'd love to be proven wrong. Sounds like it was fairly popular in the past?

I agree, although I will cry a little bit over the loss of the traditional thread title

I've gotten to see the completed dub of the pilot on YouTube now. I cannot begin to express just how grateful I am to everyone involved in this spectacular project. All I can really do is say thanks.
“So here’s the deal. Life doesn’t always wanna be your friend. Sometimes it’ll feel like life wants to hurt you. But you can’t just hide, ‘cause nobody likes a quitter. You’ve gotta take chances. They never said it was gonna be fun, or easy. Whether your totally ready, or when you least expect it, it doesn’t matter: life will punch you right in the face. And you can lie there for a second, cry a little if you need to, but get back on your feet, ‘cause it’s the gettin’ back up that counts. And that’s what shows that you’ve got heart, that’s what helps keep you going. Fall down seven times? Get up eight. And know, we’ll be right there with you.” - T.O.M. (Toonami)
