I wouldn't mind seeing an Outlaw Star prequel.

But anyway...yeah, not a fan of Advance Guard of Another World. a.k.a. the Cactus Episode.
Since I'm not a huge fan of filler episodes in any anime, I found that Gene setting up shop in Heifong seemed to be too convenient. In addition, we as the viewers never hear of this cactus and where it came from after Melfina stomped the hell out of it.
No plot value or relevance to the main plot whatsoever that I recall.

A boy has the right to dream. There are endless possibilities stretched out before him. What awaits him down the path he will then have to choose; the boy doesn't always know. At some point the boy then becomes an adult, and learns what he was able to become. Joy and sadness will forever accompany this. He is confronted with a choice; when this happens, does he bid his past farewell in his heart? Once a boy becomes an adult, he can no longer go back to being a boy; the boy is now a man. Only one thing can be said: "A boy has the right to dream.". For those endless possibilities are stretched out before him.

We must remember...all men were once boys.

I too think that the cactus episode was the weakest episode in the series. It was funny I guess, but seemed a bit too hokey and definitely filler-ish.

Law and Lawlessness (Ep 19) Just a really boring episode imo - a really slow setup. The new characters were dull and it doesn't help that they went on to star in a lacklustre spin-off.

Not a 'moment' but one of my biggest regrets about the series was that Hilda was killed off before Aisha and Suzuka ended up as part of the Outlaw Star's crew. I would've loved to have seen more prolonged interaction between alpha-females like Hot Ice, the Beast Girl and the Beautiful Assassin (aside from Hilda playing chicken with Aisha's battleship when they were fleeing Blue Heaven). Then again- that's assuming Aisha or Suzuka would (nominally) be on the same side as Hot Ice.

But at least they didn't use some sort of contrived plot device to try and resurrect Hilda, either.

Agreed. Definitely my least favourite episode. To add insult to injury, the canon was screwed up by the spin-off too, but that's a discussion for another day.

Yeah it's a shame we had to lose her so early, and we were indeed spared some cheap gimmick to bring her back.
Still it was a necessary step to force Gene to take charge of the adventure, and therefore his life.

    Character motivations aside.
It would have no doubt been priceless to see Hilda shut down Aisha's schemes early on.

The only real complaint I have about OLS is the inconsistency with the animation. I remember Mantis saying something like they had a bunch of different animators working on different episodes, so in the end the way the characters are drawn can end up looking very different.

For me this was most noticable in 'Demon of the Water Planet', the characters look extremely off-model which is a shame because it was an otherwise great episode.

Here's a screenshot I just took so you know what I'm talking about:

Absolutely. Sometimes I think the bizarre animation changes have a charm to them. At other times the animation must make one feel like, well...

That gives me a fun idea (well, I'm using the term loosely here): What if you tried distinguish each episode by the artist who worked on it? Might be a waste of time if it's already listed in the credits, and then there are cases where a single episode might have two seperate artists working on it, but I think it's worth giving it a shot. Could make for a neat thread idea.

In my head it'd read something like this, but it'd be even better if we could distinguish the artists' names:

    Episode 1: A
    Episode 2: A
    Episode 3: B
    Episode 4: A, B
    Episode 5: C

All listed with images, of course. I'm going to be re-watching the series in Japanese soon so I'll try and give it a go if no one else has done something similar. The more I think about this actually it could end up taking a good couple of re-runs to compare them, but hell I've got nothing better to do.

Edit: Thinking upon it further, this isn't actually a totally unique idea. People have done similar things with Dragon Ball in the past which makes this feel a bit more attainable! http://www.kanzenshuu.com/animation-styles/

That's a great idea for a game on Tenrei! After all, if we were to make it a game of sorts that's where all the games are at. That Dragon Ball link says a lot, actually. There are probably more animators than we think that worked on Outlaw Star. That said, we could find sample frames that each artist has worked on, and show those as a reference for people to identify who animated single frames picked from episodes, if I didn't make that too confusing. I think frames would be better than video clips, since many animators may have worked on even ten seconds' worth of video.
