RE: Gene Starwind vs. Spike Spiegel

Gene anyday there is no way spike could take a caster shot now if it was just hand gun to hand gun i say even match XGP vs. sword fish xgp rip it apart even if it was the other ship to. Only think difference would be swordfish is smaller and probably better in close range combat i guess.

(Aisha Clan Clan) I've never seen a ship like this before. It's far behind any C'tarl-C'tarl ship. It won't move unless you're naked! That's very kinky, wouldn't you say?

RE: Gene Starwind vs. Spike Spiegel

Spike has a much deeper character background that goes more in-depth than Gene, and Spike is a beast at hand-to-hand combat, but that's pretty much it. Gene just has better firepower both in small arms and in mechanized combat in the Outlaw Star (or the XGP15A2 for all your purists), and Gene seems to have that aggressive and confident edge to his personality which Spike lacks.

It's close, but I'm going with Gene. Now, if it was a debate between Gene and Kamina/Simon...
A boy has the right to dream. There are endless possibilities stretched out before him. What awaits him down the path he will then have to choose; the boy doesn't always know. At some point the boy then becomes an adult, and learns what he was able to become. Joy and sadness will forever accompany this. He is confronted with a choice; when this happens, does he bid his past farewell in his heart? Once a boy becomes an adult, he can no longer go back to being a boy; the boy is now a man. Only one thing can be said: "A boy has the right to dream.". For those endless possibilities are stretched out before him.

RE: Gene Starwind vs. Spike Spiegel

its funny how this is a topic, b/c i had a debate with a guy from work a year ago about this same topic!

simple put, Spike is more mature, laid back, and classy. (my co-workers point) the audience is for more mature people.
Meanwhile, Gene is more younger in character (as in maturity), action prone, making rash decisions and can be child-like (that is taken from Suzuka's comment), but he is fun.

for me i got to know Gene when i was 11 and i thought he was awesome. I have seen a bit of Spike from Cowboy Bebop... and the movie so i will need to finish the show..

    but overall..

    GENE

i assume that when you ask me to tell you "why it's good" that you want me to tell you why i like it.

personal opinion, i guess. i enjoy stories that differ from the regular action anime i watch, so i watched it one day. yeah, the first half is more or less ecchi, but toward the second half is when it gets good. it delves into issues about what "life" truly is, and whether a computer can be considered alive. also, i think that it's a really good love story. i can understand why some people don't like the anime, because it isn't for everyone. i just happened to personally enjoy it.

madmanmark08: Please stop double posting. I've seen you do it a lot when it isn't necessary. Let's stay on topic, too.

Honestly, I'm not sure who I'd vote for.

First, I'm going to discuss battle strength: Spike is a very skilled gunman. Gene often wins fights through luck, although he does have a few great tricks up his sleeve. He'd paint the walls red if Spike took a caster shot, but Spike is pretty good on the agility side of things.

However, Spike likes to handle everything on his own. That would be his downfall. Jim would probably provide Gene with intel which would give him the tactical advantage. And if worst came to worst...

    Episode 26: Outlaw Star
Suzuka would jump in as she tried to with Shimi (although she had food poisoning thanks to Aisha), and Suzuka is undoubtedly a better fighter than both Gene and Spike, and probably could have taken Shimi if she was in good health. Remember, Suzuka was using Gene to get to the Galactic Leyline. She couldn't have let Gene die on her, and I don't think she would after the events of the Leyline either because she joined Gene again, and it's hinted that she loves him.

So, whilst I'd say Spike might be a better fighter, Gene has a tactical and technological advantage and friendship on his side. Considering what I've come up with, I think Gene would win.

Secondly, character. I think whilst Spike no doubt has a deeper character, Gene gives the empowering feeling of chasing your desires and not giving up hope. He's an inspiration to me. I know it's simple reasoning, but again, I'll choose Gene.
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

RE: Gene Starwind vs. Spike Spiegel

Gene gets a caster? No fair lol

I think everyone knows how I feel about this lol. But, I'll try to tackle it unbiased.

As a character, I dont think theres a better one in anime than Spike. But hey, thats just my opinion.

    Now for a fight:

    Hand to Hand: Spike
Firearms: Spike (Unless gene has caster lol)
    Technology: Gene
    Support: Gene (As Mantis said)

So I guess Idk who would win. Spike is better trained and everything through his years with the syndicate but Gene was a beast without it. So I guess Gene has a higher potential ceiling maybe?

Would no doubt be an interesting bout.

RE: Gene Starwind vs. Spike Spiegel

I really had to think about this one.

If this were a one on one battle Spike has a slight advantage over Gene. Spike is superior in hand to hand combat and he has a more ruthless mindset than Gene. Gene has better technology, the Caster gun, but both equal in small arms skills. I think Spike will see the Caster and try to get up close or at least dodge incoming fire from the "hand cannon". But once Spike gets close to Gene that will be Gene's downfall.

If we were to involve the crew in this Gene has the absolute advantage in this. Spike like stated above tends to act alone and there is a very strained comradely with the rest of the Bebop crew. Faye probably bail on them when the brown stuff starts to hit the fan. The OLS crew are more unified in spite of their reasons for staying on with Gene. Suzuka is easy the most skilled fighter of all of them and Aisha being a pretty good fighter in her own right, but also with her juggernaut like strength and being bullet helps out. Ed and Jim I say are dead even in their respective skills.

If it were a space battle, Gene easily, but with scars so to say. The Bebop is just a fish boat that was modified to handle smaller craft with no on board weapons. OLS has speed, weapons and technology on Gene's side. Even with the Sword Fish, Hammerhead and Stingray out fighting they'll probably give the OLS minor to moderate damage due to the SF cannon and HH's missiles. They'll eventually will be overcome by the OLS speed and weapons fire.

One on one: Spike, but barely
Crew vs. Crew: Gene, most definitely
Ship to Ship: Gene with the Outlaw Star hands down
We are all insane, we just act normal for the sake of others.

RE: Gene Starwind vs. Spike Spiegel

    Well said. Very well said.

I was going to make a point that Spike's Sword Fish had a lot more manueverability than the Outlaw Star due to it being smaller and capability for space and atmospheric travel (the only thing the Outlaw Star can't do). But, with perimeter cameras, pulse cannons, missles and anti-missles, the grapplerarms and their weapons, as well as the awesome sub-aether drive...

    Gene wins. Almost no contest.
