Yeah, the Orange bricks are garbage when it comes to the picture, there's even moments where the lines disappear due to their "remastering". http://imgur.com/a/LOF4N
The most faithful picture quality would be found on the Dragon Box releases since those come straight from Japan. The thing is, the Dragon Boxes were only released in a limited capacity so they quickly went out of print and are now insanely high in price. I only own one volume myself and that's mainly because my preferred way of watching the conclusion to the Frieza arc is in Japanese.

Yikes, that's some shoddy 'remaster' work if I've ever seen! What the hell were they thinking? I think they left Bubbles in charge of the project.

What are your thoughts on Dragon Ball Kai, by the way? I've never seen it myself, but I'm wondering what a veteran fan like yourself thinks of it.

I'm kind of indifferent when it comes to Kai. I think it's great that the Funimation actors got a chance to redub the show because it's given us an acceptable English dub of the series that's more faithful to the original but on the other hand there was this whole plagiarism scandal that happened in Japan with Kenji Yamamoto (Kai's composer) which kind of put a damper on the whole thing. They basically had to change the soundtrack last minute and it kind of detracts from the show in my opinion.

I'm also personally more of a fan of the Canadian actors, particularly Brian Drummond's Vegeta and Scott McNeil's Piccolo as they're the ones I remember fondly growing up. I had been eagerly awaiting Canada's Kai dub (which was rumoured to have it's own Canadian produced soundtrack) but with the UK channel Kix choosing to air the Funimation version instead and Canada seemingly uninterested in broadcasting Kai themselves, I'm not even sure where it would be shown at this point. Funimation are only concerned with releasing their own dubs so much like the Westwood and Blue Water dubs, there's no chance of it getting a home release.

That being said, there has been a bit of news on the subject that came out today, Lee Tockar (Canadian voice actor) just announce on his official facebook account that he's playing Frieza in DBKAi and that, more importantly, "the powers that be have allowed" him to do so. This bit of news has renewed my hope a little bit in the project but I don't want to get too excited in case I'm let down yet again.

Aside from all that, there is the Final Chapters (Buu saga) of Kai that came out in Japan recently which is set to be released in America sometimes in the future. I'm curious to see how Funimation will handle that this time around.

Anything beyond Kai (i.e Super and Resurrection F) I don't really care for but I know plenty of people who do so I'm more in the minority there. The DB franchise is more of a nostalgic thing for me at this point. I'm not totally thrilled by the new direction they're taking the story and characters in.

Welcome aboard, Nitro! And I'll just throw in here as well, I love Brian Drummond's Vegeta. I never saw the Ocean Dub of DBZ past the Namek Saga, so I'm curious how it would have gone with Vegeta's transition from villain to antihero and eventual protagonist: Drummond's Vegeta sounds pure evil, and fit the capstone villain of the Saiyan Saga like a glove. (Oh heck, while we're at it, shout-out for the Bruce Faulconer soundtrack...I can hardly watch DBZ without it!)

I agree about Dragon Ball being more of a nostalgia thing, Nitro. The way we experienced DBZ was very different from even the source material, Goku was never really a righteous 'hope of the universe' figure in the original Japanese, he just wanted to kick Frieza's ass. It's crazy how much they changed the atmosphere of the show, to the point where the English dub very much stands out as its own thing. Bruce Faulconer's music is definately a factor in that. My preference between Ocean/Funi varies from scene to scene, but Drummond absolutely killed it here.

Nice to meet you, Nitro! I hope you enjoy the forums.

I think the most fun for me growing up with the series on TV and censored, was that when I finally picked up the DVD I had access to the show under a completely new context. It was literally seeing all-new material with my favourite characters again, what fun.
