I'd say Outlaw Star is sci-fi in far more ways than just space. It's just that space is the main association people make. Outlaw Star is a mixture of many themes without spoiling the broth. I'd certainly go into my thoughts on this another day.

Righty, I'll be on Steam either way. Time for some Virtua Fighter RPG.

Out of curiosity Zem, what turned you off from Sci-Fi? I ask because I'm wondering if you just been burned out by schlock and maybe you haven't sunk your teeth into meatier stuff like The Forever War or Blade Runner and the like. Or would you say you probably like it best when it's in the background for stuff of other genres like Outlaw Star being an adventure and Trigun being basically a western?

Anywho, I don't think I'll be able to cut it this weekend. I think next weekend will work out better for me. I also wanted to let you fellas know, if you don't have any new year's plans, that we can do a new year's eve get together. Nothings set in stone since I need to see if my buddies are gonna do something but if I'm free and you guys are up for it, we could do something fun on that day as well.

    YOU

Hahaha, ummm I think you might be right. Perhaps schlock burnt me out, but I think it's really just because sci-fi is overused as a setting/flavor in fiction. Of course I like OLS but I also discovered it long before I was burnt out on it. I do set aside a small protective bubble for Space Westerns, and I could even argue with myself that 'Space'-themed stuff as a subset of Sci-Fi is alright. I used to like Star Wars and I currently like Planetes.

I think you hit the nail on the head in the sense that Sci-Fi takes a backseat role in the several series I made large exceptions for. I don't hate Sci-Fi or anything, I'm just sort of burnt out on it. You suggested Blade Runner but if you look a few posts back that film is the reason we are discussing this right now. I watched (most of) a trailer for it and couldn't have been less interested. It sucks because I've had it recommended to me more times than I can count over the years and it looks nothing like I imagined it. I thought it would be more stoic, but it's painfully cheesy and not in a good Samurai Cop sort of way.

I like the Terminator and T2, though. Just want to be clear on that one, lol. Would you consider those to be primarily Action or Sci-Fi? Again, I think the actual science takes a back seat to the idea that a cool robodude is kicking ass.

I'm really feeling the Christmas spirit this year and I'm uncharacteristically positive this week so I won't complain anymore, at least for a while. Friday after work is best for me. Our Japanese buddy is visiting Saturday and I need to help him with some real life stuff so I won't be available Saturday night. Sunday is possible as well unless I'm forgetting something. We can watch whatever I guess. I'll just drink more if there are boring humans in it. I'd like to see: Akira, Paprika, Die Hard, Bible Black, Tenchi the Movie 2: The Daughter of Darkness, Tokyo God Fathers, or the Love Hina Christmas Special.

Ok, I started off serious, then added a few I knew were Christmas-related or took place during the Winter at least....and discovered that Tenchi Muyo has a Christmas movie. Wtf.

I've been thinking a bit about other Toward Stars lore. Maybe it's about time we put in a proper effort to tackle the elephant in the fanbase: Angel Links. Let's call it Angel Links Absolution! But in all seriousness, perhaps during the same get-togethers we'd also watch Outlaw Star we could watch one or two episodes of Angel Links each time, then share a few thoughts in threads in the Toward Stars Extended forum.

I just think this is seriously overdue. I know it can drag but perhaps we haven't given the show a fair chance. We'd just have to grit our teeth!

I'll join. I mean I allllmost tackled it myself but I never made it all the way through. If there was some forum interaction in the way you suggested I think it would make the task easier to bear.

Tonight I got to play Halo: Reach with Starwind55!

We completed the first mission and might continue that on Sunday, but we'll watch videos instead if Zemekis (or anyone else who wants to join in) can make it. It'd be at some point from 10PM to 3AM UK time. Since my sleep is perpetually fucked right now (it's a seasonal thing) I'm not too fussy!

Been meaning to post here, I'll be busy for the next few weekends with my move to the new house so please enjoy your Xbox games

If you want to play some Visual Novels or JRPGs maybe I'll show up

I remember this video btw! I haven't seen it in FOREVER it was a good laugh to see it again. Nota big Halo fan, but I did play a few of them with my cousin (and got endless shit in school for not having an Xbox/playing Halo games) and I did enjoy them a bit.. My best memories are: Operation Box. My cousin brought his Xbox to the beach house where we were staying and we played Halo or Halo 2 (can't remember) until really late each night. We set it to Legendary difficulty and we had this strategy where we'd melee objects across the map for cover. Our object of choice was this huge metal crate that took hundreds of hits to move.

the other memory was funny for me but not the guy who invited me to play. It's someone who's till a close buddy of mine to this day and I still tease him over this. He invited me over for a New Year's eve and we were gonna play his brand new copy of Halo: ODST. Ohhhh boy was he excited...he was SO let down that ODST was the first and last game he pre-ordered in his life.

Egoraptor was good back in the day, wasn't he? It'll be fun to try the Halo games finally. I played Halo 2 co-op at a buddies house way, way back in high school and I had fun with it. I'm curious to play Halo: Combat Evolved just to look at it from the perspective of someone who grew up with the classical era of FPS like Doom, Duke Nukem 3d and the like. I know a lot of FPS fans site Halo as ushering in the dark ages for the genre though I would argue that Call of Duty is more responsible for that than Halo was. I had a good time with Reach and I look forward to playing more Sunday.

So get cozy in your new home Zem. Mantis and I are going to play manly videogames made for chads.

  9. Drink to This! Mantis would drink to this post
