Well, Friday was eventful. The bar in town opened back up and I had a couple johnny jump us before coming home for the stream and it got...lively shall we say though I think the moral that we should take away from this last get together is don't have johnny jump ups before joining the stream. I think I'm gonna take a break from the alcohol for the next few weeks.

    Same time this Friday?

Friday was a trainwreck lol. You very nearly passed out several times, I think. Those wine coolers really did a number on you!!

That wasn't the real problem though. GTO sucked bad. Not a single one of us 3 wanted to finish the first episode. Hey, at least we didn't invest too much time in it. Parasyte was going over well but I couldn't understand your slurred speech & when I came back from the bathroom both you & Mantis were gone so perhaps you guys didn't like it as much as I thought haha.

Not sure about this Friday yet.

Well, it's comforting to know I didn't miss much. Honestly, I kind of felt bad about it since I didn't know how much of a prick I was. I honestly don't remember much of GTO but I guess it wasn't a huge loss based on what you said. I don't recall parasyte being mentioned though being hammered to hell and back probably had something to do with it. I'm kind of leaning towards something else...FLCL maybe? I know we caught the first episode and I know it had a huge impact on you. I'd be interested in finishing that with you.

But yeah, let me know if you're on for Friday. I'm actually going to have Friday off so I can start earlier if you like. Out of curiosity, did you want to do a 4th of July get together? I'd imagine you might be busy on that day but maybe the Friday before? Of course, I'm uncertain as well because I might be with my buddies on Friday and Saturday that weekend.

It was rather bad. Nothing unforgivable but since we couldn't really converse with you the whole thing sort of fell apart. I think if you start drinking during the get-together we'll be just fine but if you start several hours ahead just let us know and we can re-schedule.

It wasn't just mentioned, we watched 2 and a half episodes of it.

I adore FLCL. It's in my top 3 for sure (alongside OLS and InuYasha) and as such I feel like it deserves a bit more reverence than watching with me talking over it? Over the years I actually developed a watching guide for FLCL and became somewhat of a Nazi about how people watch it. When I watched it with my friends and my sister, I refused to say anything to them until it was all over. It also needs to be viewed in one sitting. I've always said that it's best to consume it all in one go with no time to take a breather, and then I later discovered that in Japan it did/does air as a movie. You'll notice that there is no opening theme song to the show because it's been artificially broken up into episodes.

I agree with you that FLCL is a really great idea, I just don't wanna fuck it up for you. That said, out of the 30-ish hours of anime we've watched together now, that 28 minutes during FLCL episode 1 was our best conversation. that show brings out the best in me and makes me self-reflective/analytical like nothing else. If you wanna take it on, I'd say let's go for it. At your age perhaps it won't have the massive impact it did for me on that Summer night when I stumbled across it at age 11. Personally, I think the show's context changes as you get older. Because things happen SO QUICKLY you only have time to really focus on 1 or 2 characters maximum on a single viewing. As a kid I focused on the self-insert Naota. As a mid-late teen I focused on Mamimi, and once I got into Grad School I resonate with Haruko the most. It's one heck of a show.

I'll need another day or two before I can confirm Friday. I need to see how work looks and whether I need to go shopping/fix the mower/etc. I hate to make promises when owning a house, so many things can spring up in the course of a work week that need my attention when the weekend rolls around but I will make it this Friday if at all possible. I'm busy on the 4th of July but I don't think I have much planned the Friday before.

No ifs ands or buts, that was my fuck up. I went to the bar just because it finally opened back up and my friend didn't want to go on Saturday and I felt that I should at least support it now that it opened back up. The big mistake was drinking something that strong (And three full glasses at that!). I usually have a few drinks before a stream, though what I usually drink isn't anywhere near as strong. So yeah, going forward what I drink will be much lighter so that way we can actually have a proper conversation.

I don't know, I think it's fun and insightful to hear you wax philosophical when watching a show like that (And I agree, that was a great night) and what it meant to you. Lord knows I've done it with you about the things I like part of the fun for me is just to see the show from your perspective. As I mentioned that night, I've only seen an episode or two when it aired on Adult Swim but it was always a show that I wanted to watch in it's entirety.

Overall I enjoyed it. I agree that the first anime blowed. I was quite enjoying Parasyte but I didn't fully take in a lot of it. I guess this mostly comes down to the current means of a get-together. I have never been one to participate in viewings with people using voice chat.

Obviously this kind of approach works in real life as you're enjoying it with other people who are likely quite interested in the show. Like at an anime club. People might be talking but it's usually background noise. It's the inverse when doing this Zoom thing you came up with. Subtitles were mandatory because the anime probably had less than 50% of the voice chat volume, and therefore the anime becomes secondary to the social aspect of the session which is all well and good for many people but not the way I'd do it.

I have also noticed an absence of structure. The reason I left (although I did stick around for quite a while) is because I had no idea when we were supposed to finish watching and time zone differences, needing to sleep, so forth. I prefer having a general idea of this. "We're going to start at X time and watch Y episodes of Z show(s)." Or a film we know the length of. Improvisation can make it a little confusing I guess. Voting (or something to that effect) on a show ensures everyone would likely enjoy it.

There were a few hiccups in the stream but for the most part the stream quality was pretty good.

And yeah, Starwind being drunk as a skunk probably didn't help matters.

Perhaps we should go with FLCL then.

100% agree that our setup isn't the ideal way to get immersed in an anime but it is the best way to do a get-together for the purposes of socializing over long distances. Starwind and I both prefer voice chat, although it does impact the audio. I always do a sound check in the beginning but Starwind was so drunk this time he told me everything sounded good...the levels aren't usually that bad I think it works pretty well from a technical standpoint at least. The stream is more reliable and we don't need to fiddle with quality settings or syncing. I guess the win-win solution would be if I muted everyone and we just used the chatroom.

Anyway, I'm not here to defend it. Starwind went on the warpath to get you on Zoom, direct your complaints to his department! If you don't like viewing anime that way then I fully understand and will continue to not bother you about it. I'm still happy to hop over to PLEX for things you'll host, this wasn't meant to be permanent although I do enjoy it much more. You're right though, it doesn't work as well for shows you really want to absorb yourself in. We were watching Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo, zero harm was done by babbling over it. I think Starwind and I will keep using it to shoot the shit for the time being, the casual atmosphere is really good after work.

The way I see it, the largest exception to the rule is multiplayer gaming. Gaming is an interactive experience, so of course you have a reason to talk anyway. The game and chit-chat can be enjoyed simultaneously so I'd be 100% up for that. But as you acknowledge, in my case it doesn't really work with video watching. It's no big deal anyways. We've been doing it through Plex for close to three years now, I believe. A change of scenery is understandable.
