Space exploration & colonization is the most important thing, imo.

The sense of adventure & wonder that an advanced space-faring society evokes is part of the reason we're here on an Outlaw Star website.

Exploring mars is one thing, but living on it? No real point trying to live on a planet with nothing on it besides dirt and rocks.

That is the thing. I mean they know it can't sustain plant growth so living on the planet means living in conditioned "pods" if you will where they control everything in order to have plants, animals, etc. be able to live there. I mean if they were looking to go this route, I think a lot of people will lose their lives before it becomes "safe enough" and even then, it will always be a risk. The distance is very far away too. It makes more sense to try things on the moon first.

It wouldn't be just like living back on Earth, but that's sort of the point (unless we wind up on Mars because Earth is FUBAR). Mars has a bunch of dirt and rocks but they're different dirt and rocks than here. If I recall correctly, Mars has a lot of iron? Some other stuff too, I'm sure. Perhaps we don't live there as a replacement for Earth but rather as a place to do manufacturing and ship the products back to Earth so we don't pollute as much?

To extend my comment on Example's post, this is where I was going with it as well. Obviously Mars doesn't natively support human life but given enough time we will find ways to either terraform the environment (bad idea if you've ever read the manga Terraformars, lmao) or bring along a slice of Earth's survivability with us in Pods or massive modules the size of a small city. It's probably wishful thinking that we'd ever get our shit together enough to do that kind of thing reliably, though.
