RE: Do you prefer long or short anime series?

I guess I can't really decide. When I watch a short anime, that I really enjoy, I always end up wanting more when it's over, But yes, long series' can drag on. I think somewhere between 50 and 100 episodes is good for a series.

I like the 24-27 episode range the most.

I prefer 26 episodes or less; however, some anime series like Elfen Lied needed to continue with more episodes since the Manga kept going. But that is more of a unfinished anime problem rather than a full finished anime. I think when you get over 50+ episodes it adds a LOT of filler. Episodes with "moral lessons" behind it rather than what the plot is actually about. I get they want to sometimes throw in a touching moment but I feel if you have a serious anime with a plot and story that you are focused on, those side plots deter you away from what you were enjoying. Which to me, makes me wonder why I even bothered watching it.

I also don't understand the reason why some anime ended long before the manga can finish. They also change the story so much from the manga. Like Claymore. 26 episodes if I remember correctly. It ended in the middle of the manga. Probably not even in the middle. The anime ending is so different that it makes it hard to continue following the manga at all even if they have changed their mind on continuing.

Shorter series tend to be better. It depends how you'd define short/long. My second favourite series is around 75-79 episodes long, I believe. I think above one hundred episodes is too much. I hate starting what I realise I may not be able to finish.

    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

I also hate it when I can't remember where I am in the story itself because there are too many episodes to account for. I feel that if you can't get the story across in less than 100 episodes, then is it really a fully developed story to begin with? I get that some epic stories take longer to get through and to establish plot but come on....Princess Mononoke may not have been an anime series but it took almost 3 hours to tell the story which is long compared to the general length of movies and if it was less than that it wouldn't have developed beautifully like it did and if it was longer it would just feel like more filler was added.

This is more of a general question: Does a story teller need over 100 episodes to get a story across?

Do over 100+ episodes of such shows such as the Dragon Ball series, Bleach, Inuyasha, etc. make it feel like the story and show itself has more merit and value of plot in comparison to other shows like FLCL, Steins;Gate, and others? Personally, I don't think long series have the interest to me like short ones do. Now I am not saying that long anime series aren't enjoyable (though the examples I gave for the long anime series I dislike) I am just saying that I am more of a story driven viewer. Anime is an art form, not just drawing art but a way of expression. I feel that if you just have a stereotypical anime plot, that series will go like a firework. May have a big bang at first but will fizzle out really fast. This goes for both long and short term anime series but it's more prevalent in the ones with lots of episodes.

The point I guess I am trying to make is the length of a series depends on the story you are trying to tell but excessive segments hurt shows to me. Like trying to elongate a fight scene to over three episodes or more doesn't feel like it had much story to begin with.

That said, I don't want a series to end abruptly or feel like there should be more (Outlaw Star being one of them....) In fact, some 26 episode series I have watched have disappointed me with the ending because it doesn't feel like the ending marked the end of the story entirely. Only a few anime series I have watched have made me watch the ending and say I was pleased with it. So I guess in retrospect, if you can finalize a series in 26 episodes or less and make me happy, awesome. If you need more than the average amount of episodes to do it, great, just as long as you give the show the ending that the viewers and the story itself deserves.

i like both but shorter series are usually better since they don't get boring an you don't have to deal with filler

RE: Do you prefer long or short anime series?

It looks like nobody here prefers just long series.

I agree there are less fillers in shorter series, but it seems fillers are mostly existing in the anime. When anime can't keep up with manga, they use fillers. Long series often cover more stories and more time period as well in the story. Shorter series usually only cover one particular timeline.

I like both when the story is interesting. I am not a fan of pointless fillers, but sometimes good fillers make me laugh.

Ram8349 makes a good point about the fillers. I like the long series, but once they get to the 52+ episodes your getting pointless fillers so the manga-ka can catch up on the story. Or creator did not really planed for an ending yet. Nadia: Secret of Blue Water's Island are was just a filler so Anno can write a proper ending for the show. Bleach did a horrible filler arc in the middle of another arc that is on [Adult Swim] now.

I like both. The longer the series, the longer the character development can go for, but, the shorter the series is the smaller the chances are of having filler episodes of nothing (NARUTOOOOOOOO-! a years worth of fillers all because they caught up to the manga...or so I've heard. It put a slight downer on my day )
