So I took my niece and nephew to see Sonic the Hedgehog on Monday. They both like Sonic so they were probably a lot more eager than me! I'd already heard that it's actually a good film but I didn't want to read other people's thoughts (including in this thread) beforehand and just enjoy it completely unbiased. And enjoy it I did! They did a fantastic job. I went in expecting something fair but not too special. You could write a list of everything not to do in a game to film adaptation and I don't think Sonic would check any of those boxes. In fact, Sega's (and by extension here, Paramount) pro-consumer approach in recent years has truly paid off: it's due to become the biggest domestic game film success. The only reason it isn't zooming ahead even farther is because of... you guessed it, coronavirus delaying the Japan and China releases that pulled in loads of Detective Pikachu's profit. Damn virus has it out for everything good!

Anyway, I've praised it, but why? A "Sonic movie" is something I dreamed of as a boy...

Would I have done it differently with that old mindset? I'd have made it more true to its canon. I loved Sonic comics and cartoons, and they all more or less stuck to the original formula. But we're living in a different world and a more serious film solely focusing on Sonic and Tails' antics wouldn't work in today's environment. For one, a lot of kids don't actually know a huge deal about Sonic's canon. It's pretty old stuff really. On the other hand, many boomers just wouldn't know what the fuck is going on with a typical Sonic story.

Basing most of it on Earth and using a human "buddy cop" partner (called Tom) keep those two audiences grounded. The film is pretty brief about Sonic's backstory and this is easier for kids to understand, and having Earth and a human keeps it more familiar and entertaining for older audiences. The only people who'd actually want a canonical Sonic film would be the "30-year-old boomers" like myself, and even I found that it wasn't the answer in the end. They've come up with a winning formula. They listened to the fans and did a complete 180 on last year's epic fail and I respect that. Hell, they even included references to Sanic and other memes like "gotta go fast", which is not too different to how Sega plays with its audience on Twitter.

Jim Carrey totally nailed his Robotnik role. It truly felt like the old Carrey was back. I recall it having a nice soundtrack including arrangements of the Mega Drive games' music. There were other nods to veteran Sega fans, including footage of many of Sega's old games at the beginning, and a credits sequence packed full of pixel art recreations of scenes in the film. It's pretty rare that I'd actually want to sit down and watch the credits at a cinema. I'm keeping this post largely spoiler-free (in case any of you haven't seen it yet... and probably should!) but I'll just say that at the very end a sequel was heavily hinted. But you all know that's already going to happen anyway. (Who knows? If it actually was a box office disaster that probably wouldn't be the case.)

I wanted to go see it, but nobody wanted to go with me so I gave it a pass.

Waifu? She's privileged, man. Every other Japanese person isn't seeing it because of our good friend Corona.

Come on Zem, you're a strong, independent man who doesn't need anyone to see a movie. You go to that theater, tell them one for Sonic, and if they tell you that there's a no singles policy, you tell them that if you want to watch a movie by yourself then you can and no fascist son of a bitch can stop you.

^ She might have been right this whole time. It's a genius play if this theory is true, but either way I'm happy about how this turned out. It's about time somebody taught the "CGI BAAAD!!" crowd a lesson anyway. (Having said that, I think Pixar looks like ass compared to classic Disney, but I think a lot of CGI does look very good. Paramount showed the world the downright fugly and the good.)

Classic Disney films look way better than the newer ones but I think this is because it is a different art form. The new stuff, when not being compared, can be appreciated. They add such small details like reflections in eyes and whatnot that look really good but when you see the work, art, and detail that went into the older films, you have to appreciate it more.

I could have done that I suppose. I only wanted to go to make fun of it with a buddy though. I didn't actually care about the movie too much.

The movie is pretty enjoyable but has some stupid moments. I don't like what they did with Dr. Robotnik. Thankfully they fixed sonic's design although I can't help but wonder if this movie exists with the original character design, if so I'd love to see that version.

Honestly I don't know who else they could have chosen to fulfil Robotnik's role unless they made him CGI which wouldn't make sense. If you merely mean Robotnik's appearance, well... I guess they could have made him wear the class funny red shirt/jacket and black pants, but it'd look a bit weird in the film's context. They'd also have had to choose a morbidly obese (or unrealistically rotund) actor. I think they had to take some liberties to make it work.

I feel like I could have elaborated on that. It's not his appearance that I dislike, he looks fine, it's understandable that they realistically wouldn't be able to find someone comically large to fulfil the role. It's his personality in the movie. I understand that creative liberties must be taken but they made Robotnik's character so deliberately unlikeable that it hurts, especially taking into account that Robotnik is one of my favourite villains in video games.
I guess the movie was made with a younger audience in mind
