I've been replaying System Shock 2. It's a game that I play as a tradition when Halloween gets closer along with Resident Evil 2 and Alien: Isolation. Man, what an incredible game. It's always a joy to replay it. What I love about it is that there's a great unease during the duration of the game. In some ways, I find it creepier than Resident Evil because in RE you had friends on your side and there always seemed to be a light at the end of the tunnel. In System Shock 2, you're always alone and your only companion is...well, I don't want to spoil it but if you played the game, you'll know what I am talking about. It creates a great sense of isolation and your only hope is to use your wits and whatever gear you can salvage. The RPG elements add to you because you can essentially choose your playstyle and your never locked into a role. Typically, I go with a marine build with some hacking on the side to get some extra items. I love how the game opens where you build your character by going to the military recruitment center. It's cool that they let you build your character ingame like that and it's something I wish more RPGs did more often. I think once I beat this game, I'll move on to RE2.

I'm playing Fist of The North Star: Lost Paradise. As someone who digs that franchise, the game has been on my radar for awhile so now that it's gotten a western release, I've been playing it for the past week. It's pretty good. It's made by the same team who worked on the Yakuza games. In fact, if you've played any of the previous Yakuza games, then this game will be familiar to you. What's cool is that, rather than doing a retelling of the anime, the game does a kind of a "what if" alternate timeline scenario where Kenshiro heads off to a place called Eden (The game's equivelent of Kamurocho from Yakuza) to find Yuria. From there you encounter familiar characters, and take part in various minigames and activities. You can even go into the wasteland to find treasure and crafting materials. The fighting is pretty solid and doing Kenshiro's signature hundred crack fist of the north star complete with him going "ATATATATATATATA" never gets old. The only thing that I don't like is the larger enemies who block your attacks, making you having to do a charged up move to break it. Not only does it break the flow of combat, especially when your decimating baddies left and right only to have these huge fuckers put a halt to your stride but it doesn't make sense. Kenshiro is a guy who destroyed a tank with his fists and can survive a skyscraper falling on him. It would make sense if he was going against someone like Raoh, but some fat bandit? I know they probably had them in there to provide balance and challenge but come on! Kenshiro is like the most OP characters in anime do him just overpowering everyone with no effort would be fitting. But this is just a nitpick. If you like Fist of The North Star or the Yakuza series, you'll find much to enjoy with this game.

Just finished Trails of Cold Steel II last night. Definitely good bang for my buck, it was like 80 hours and only $40 at launch I think. Next up i'll finish off Xenogears (i'm 85% done) and wrap up Yakuza Kiwami as well.

There was a new trailer that came out and you didn't post that? Tsk tsk.

I'm with you there though. I am excited for DMC 5. Everything I've seen from it looks fantastic. It's the only game aside from Doom Eternal that I'm genuinely hyped for. I've been replaying DMC 1,3 and 4 to prepare myself for it.

Yesterday I was playing some Duke Nukem Advance. While obviously it pales in comparison to Duke Nukem 3D it was very nostalgic as I really enjoyed that game as a teenager. Plus, the cutscenes alone make it worth playing.

Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

Nice, Mantis! I've never really seen much footage of the game boy advanced version but it looks like a pretty decent port. The comic illustrations are always a plus.

I've been playing Dusk. Actually, I've been playing it since early access but now the full version has been properly released. Being a fan of classical style first person shooters, this game was right up my alley. We see a lot of retro games that try to capture the style of old games only to be some shallow attempt at fan service but what separates Dusk from the others is it tries to capture what made those classic FPS games great while forging it's own identity. It doesn't go overboard with references with past games, only peppering it here and there while laying it thick with a eerie horror atmosphere. It even brings some slight modern touches like being able to slide and shoot at enemies. It also has some inspired stuff like being able to smoke cigars and getting drunk off of beer. And the music...holy crap, the music is fantastic. It's a good mix of creepy, ambient tracks and industrial/metal tracks that go well with the action. I've actually been jamming to the soundtrack for the past hour or so. Over all, if you love old school first person shooters, then getting this game is a no brainer.

I've also been playing a shooter of a different kind...Earth Defense Force 5. This has been on my radar since Earth Defense Force 2025 was a pleasant surprise for me so I was eager to play this. It's just as much fun as the original. Basically, all you need to know is that giant bugs are invading earth and are just being dicks and you need to kick their asses. What makes it fun is that the game just overwhelms you with so many enemies on screen that it actually becomes kind of comical. In a way, it's sort of like a 3rd person version of Serious Sam. There's different classes you can play as. I've been playing the ranger since I like being an infantry type guy. Haven't tried the other characters just yet but if the last game is of any indication, then the classes will feel and play very distinctly from one another. So overall, really fun game. I'd say you should go to your nearest recruiting station, pick this game up and help fight the good fight against the insect hordes. Afterall, service guarantees citizenship!

EDF is the coolest. Just had to swing by and say that

I've been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 because I felt like finally letting my defenses down and being a basic bitch. It's actually quite fun, and I got it for free from a friend who finished it so it didn't hurt to give it a try. Then it's back to Trails of Cold Steel II, Xenogears, and Brave Fencer Musashi. I've been hankering to play Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon again as well. It's got wacky humor, mech fights, cool food, Reptilians (yes, really), and a submarine in which all the enemies are Japanese food.
