RE: What game(s) are you currently playing?

Baron: I played it six years ago so I'm afraid I must have forgotten that fact. The importance of a storyline is a highly subjective matter I suppose. I'm studying game narratology as a module at my university, so over the coming weeks perhaps I'll learn more about game narratives. You say "that's all", but from a game developer's standpoint, "making changes where necessary" can change a lot and add significant development time. Doom didn't have a story, so it didn't matter. It wasn't by definition a full co-op campaign.

Katey: I've completed Fallout 3 and New Vegas, though I've still got to play the game differently towards the end for New Vegas to get all the achievements. As for the whole co-op business, for a game designer it's very difficult to create a good co-op game like that. With a single player mode the designer gets the peace of mind of having a form of linearity. With a dynamic co-operative campaign, the amount of factors is multiplied many times, and there is so much to consider.

Some game developers have had good ideas for tackling this for. For instance, in Army of Two if a second player is not present, the second character is controlled by an AI. (And yes, it's an actual character, not some generic AI model.) The problem with this is the scripted nature of such a game and how robotic the AI's behaviour can be. It's where Army of Two suffered. What is typically a single player experience with a narrative made multiplayer is a very difficult thing to do, and in my opinion the best way to do it is to make the game multiplayer-only. But it won't sell well. The only way to do that is make it online co-op, but even then it's a limited market.

Not to mention, I much prefer the days of just playing games on the couch with friends.

Bleh, never said it was easy.

If Borderlands expanded their story out in the first place instead of releasing a half story for a full game it might have worked a load better. The ending was the worst ending in the games of history.

Fact still stands, no decent games out... sorry but f**k console.

RE: What game(s) are you currently playing?

I never said you did. But as a game design student I like to analyse these things. I hear Borderlands is like Fallout 3/NV, so I'll have to look into it. Oh, you can play a lot of older games with keyboard and mouse, and even fairly recent (PS2) using an emulator. So, you can't really complain! Unless you're a graphics whore.

RE: What game(s) are you currently playing?

well i like graphics... but its not reaaaally important.

no idea how to use an emulator whatsit. anyway as if theres any console games id actually want to play on the pc

borderlands is kinda fun, its crap compared to new vegas though i would think, especially comparing storylines. the graphics are really interesting though and looting is quite fun and every gun you find is unique/different. they have like a weapon randomiser generator thing (lol great termonology there)

my typing = using the Katey dictionary, hell yeah

Katey plus dictionary equals. Naughty, huh? Indeed—trying to coerce a grammar police officer into reacting angrily through the means of poor English is quite an offence.

So why are console games so much worse? What if it's a game that's available on both the PC and a console? You'd probably complain about the control method, which is fair enough. What if you couldn't play the game natively on your PC, but you could through an emulator?

I'll get the demo on the Xbox Live marketplace if there is one. My PC's actually not that bad, but I need a better graphics card.

OMg what the hell i'm in urban dictionary D: hang on... it says im awesome *dances*

'cause console games are designed for console controls so it doesnt always work smoothly for pc, for example ff games with all the bloody menus (boring). i dont mind games being available on both.... but if it's been made solely for console it probabbbbbbbly wont play decent enough for pc.

You do realise some of the biggest RPGs (with lots of menus no less!) are PC-based, right? You're being pretty anal about it for no reason. Though I guess I'd be a hypocrite to say that—I avoid Apple products like the plague, with the exception of an iPod once which I regret. Then again, I don't like the attitude of a lot of Apple users, although I'm sure some are cool as with anything.

RE: What game(s) are you currently playing?

    oooh i hate apple too.

i could sit here and write about all the games i dislike and specifically why, with lots of refernces to it being designed for console gamers and not pc gamers, but it would take a long time. i just used ff as an example, and the menus happen to be what make it a bad game for pc, generally. i dont even like ff anyway sorry im just picky about my games, just like a person is picky about their food.

    anyway multiplayer ftw.

With you on that. I find DVD menus to be more fun, personally.

RE: What game(s) are you currently playing?

Back to the point though, Final Fantasy games are one of many console series. Now, listen carefully. This is the most important fact of all...

PC gaming would probably cease to exist without console gaming. Almost undoubtedly. This also proves that PC gaming was directly influenced by console gaming.
