I've been playing Maximum Action for the PC. It's in early access so it's still rough around the edges but even in it's early stage, it's still awesome to play. It takes it's inspiration from John Woo's early Hong Kong movies as well as action movies in general so me being a whore for such things, I knew that I had to give it a whirl. You can deal wield just about anything and the weapons feel great to use (It feels better than most AAA games do). Diving through the air in slow-motion while gunning down dirtbags never gets old. The graphics do go for a retro look. It kind of reminds me of the graphical style of Syphon Filter back on the PS1. Even some of the character models look similar. As I mentioned, it's still buggy (Guns fall through the grounds, sound effects cut out the music sometimes) but I wouldn't let that scare you off. New Blood Interactive (Who also worked on Dusk, another great retro style FPS)is helping out with the development so I'm confident that this is going to get polished in the future. I'd recommend checking it out.

I also got Bloodstained recently. I haven't had the chance to play it but it looks really cool from what I've seen of it so I'm looking forward to trying it out.

I recently started replaying Final Fantasy VII, mostly because I was so curious about the Remako HD mod. The modder used AI to upscale the pre-rendered backgrounds and various textures. The results are eye-popping. I thought it was good timing with the Final Fantasy VIII remaster around the corner.

When you look at the original renders that are pixelated, muddy and dithered (yet, CRT televisions gave an illusion of more detail back in the day) this quality is almost unbelievable. I'm also using the New Threat mod that changes the game a damn lot. Alas, the mod is having problems with my GPD WIN 2 for whatever reason. Until I fix that (or the modders) which I'd been trying for days FFVII is on hold. However, they're not the only ones who have been experimenting with AI upscaling. I recently upscaled backgrounds from Parasite Eve II.

Unfortunately, since it's a PS1 game with no ports, replacing the old backgrounds with upscaled ones is the tricky part. Anyhow, example...

Can't find the exact image I worked from, but this is close enough.

Not perfect yet but I'm getting there.

    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

Completed Skies of Arcadia and I'm riiiight at the end of Vagrant Story. 1/3 through Okami as well, my buddy popped the disc in 2 weekends ago and we blasted through a lot of it in a sitting. Next up once I finish those: Final Fantasy X-2 Remastered, the newest FF XIV expansion (kinda already playing that in-between the others), more RuneScape, and Lunar: Silver Star Story (thanks for reminding me to finish that one, Starwind!!!)

You know, it's been awhile since I've posted here so I figured I'd give an update of what I've been playing.

First up, Contra: Rouge Corps...sort of. I only played the demo. I've been hearing a lot of bad things about but I figured I'd give it a shot since I love Contra. I don't hate it but the problem is it's not true Contra. It's an overhead shooter that owes more to Smash TV than Contra. It also has these special attacks that you can do that are basically "EPIC CUTSCENE OF MAIN CHARACTER DOING SOMETHING BADASS!" that just takes control away from the player. Overall, I can't help shake the feeling that all Konami did was just hire who made an unrelated action game, call it Contra and call it a day. I would say just stick to classic Contra, particular Contra: Hard Corps (My personal favorite).

Next up is Project Warlock. The indie first-person shooter revival train continues on with this one. It's very much like Wolfenstein 3d in terms of it's level design but what sets it apart are light RPG elements. Treasure nets you EXP points that you can use to upgrade your stats (Health, Ammo Capacity ect.) and you can also find upgrade points where you can later choose how to upgrade your weapons. For example, you can turn your double barrel shotgun into a 4 barrel shotgun, you can turn your SMG into a nail gun that bounces off of objects, and the like. The weapons feel impactful and punchy and has some solid music. If you really want to make it old school, you can make the game look like and old Gameboy game. If you like classic style shooters, you'll find plenty of fun here.

And it's Halloween time so I'm doing my tradition of replaying some of my favorite horror games. First, I'm replaying Alien: Isolation. Man, this game gets intense. I still think it's one of the best horror games ever made. I'm sadden that indie horror games don't turn to this game for inspiration because it does a brilliant job of building fear and tension without cheap jump scares. There's a part in the game where the alien is nearby and your waiting for a train to come by. The music is pounding and you can hear the alien in the background. My heartrate was increasing during this whole time and all it was at that moment was music and sound! I can't wait to get to the later parts of the game where shit gets really real.

After that, I'm debating on replaying OG Resident Evil 2 or Vampire: The Masquerade-Bloodlines.

Given that you seem to like both old school shooters and retro-revival shooters, have you played Hard Reset? It's sort of like a cyberpunk Quake with some modern QOL tweaks. Very interesting mechanics too -- you only have two weapons, but they can be upgraded with "modules" that turn them into all sorts of stuff ranging from your ordinary shotgun/rifle type weapons into crazier stuff like an x-ray railgun and electric grenade launcher. Be sure to get the Redux version that has improved graphics and a cyber-katana, too.

@ Starwind, Mantis, StarDood have any of y'all played Strafe?

I'm currently finishing up my 100% playthrough of FFVIII, then back to Tales of Vesperia, Vagrant Story, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 until Death Stranding launches.

    StarDood64:

I did play demo for Hard Reset a long time ago. I really don't remember much of it aside from I wasn't impressed at the time. I know the guys who made it would go on to do the Shadow Warrior reboot which I like quite a bit so perhaps I should look into picking up Hard Reset and give it another chance.

    Zem:

This one I did play and I wasn't too fond of it. It was less of a classical style first person shooter and more of a rouge-like with some classic shooter elements thrown in. It felt like someone who didn't really grow up with the genre doing what he felt 90s styles shooters were like. Had a great soundtrack though. If you want an example of a retro-style shooter that actually feels like it was made by someone who grew up with them, there's plenty of good examples like Dusk or Project Warlock.

I had the same reaction the first time I played it, but on my second try it clicked with me. The Redux version is also much, much better than the original version (which might be what you played). It's definitely not on the level of DOOM/Quake and the like, but it's good fun for a few hours if you're ever looking for something a bit different.

No, never heard of it but... th-that's an eye-popping trailer.

So... at the moment I'm playing the Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations remaster on Steam. The amount of content you get in that trilogy pack is such a bargain. Only a couple of cases left until I've finished that trilogy... again. (I was a huge fan of these games in the DS days but hadn't played them in a long time. A great reunion.)

I'm also playing a JRPG called Heartbeat which I only caught wind of thanks to the efforts of the folks at ResetEra. It's pretty good, like Chrono Trigger meets Final Fantasy meets Pokémon.
