Like I said a few days ago I haven't really played games for a few weeks now. However, I do want to post that X-COM Let's Play thread as it's simply a fun idea. I'm halfway into writing it, so I'll post it next week.

After watching Indiana Jones with Starwind55 tonight I did play something for an hour or so. That would be SWAT 4, a game I loved during my teens. I was talking about the SWAT series with Starwind and decided to just go ahead and get it from GOG.

It works well with the occasional freeze for a few seconds (which is a pain but probably fixable) but did take about twenty minutes to configure properly. All good now. I finished the tutorial and the first mission. Obviously, it's a tactical shooter. I can't really put why this game is special into words. There's little to compare it with. Maybe you'd enjoy watching Mutahar play. I swear, his Let's Plays are fucking fun.

I don't really want to choose new games for my active backlog since there are already some in the queue. However, sometimes I want to play games sat at my computer for a while and SWAT 4 isn't a game I can play when I'm relaxing on my couch. No controllers. Like with Halo, Starwind is interesting in playing through SWAT 4 using online co-op. Not only is there the original game, but there's an expansion pack (you know, before being replaced with "DLC") that's reportedly pretty damn good.

Mods look awesome. New missions, weapons, improved gameplay and some extra nifty features like voice support. Personally I'd prefer to say "open, bang and clear" and monitor a hall for hostiles to using a large menu and leaving myself exposed.

I'm baffled that I somehow missed out on the SWAT 4 train since I love the shit out of SWAT 3 and consider it to be my favorite tactical shooter. I'll even say that I like it more than the original Rainbow 6 games. I've always preferred the improvisational, on the fly decision making that SWAT 3 offered. What made it great too was you could play the same mission over and over again and something different will happen each time. From what I gather, SWAT 4 continues this tradition and is more refined. I'd love to play co-op once I get it on my next pay day. Also, didn't SWAT 3 have co-op? We could try that in the mean time if you're down. If you get time, you should watch Spoony's let's play of SWAT 4. I'm not a huge fan of him but this was one of the rare instances where he shat gold.

Yeah, it's kind of weird that you haven't played it yet. I can't comment on SWAT 3, but if it's even nearly as good as SWAT 4 it'll be a must-play. I've spent a few hours playing SWAT 4 missions over the past two days. I decided to play on normal mode this time. It's probably been over a decade since I last played. I'm not sure how much the difficulty actually changes the gameplay. The main difference I see is that you need more points to advance with harder difficulties.

Even on normal, I've still had my ass kicked a few times. The unpredictability and spawn points of suspects adds a lot to the experience. I'm now up to the sixth mission. Given how I'm just going by "career" (I think) progress, I think it's time to start filling another bar. After all these missions, then it'll be the expansion pack. (Also that mod I mentioned.) So without further ado:

       38% SWAT 4

Maybe Starwind55 can join the force at some point.

You'll have to forgive the double post but I think it's time to reply to Zemekis' reply at the start of the last page! I meant to weeks ago. It regards my upcoming Final Fantasy progress.

I heard this one time but probably forgot about it. That's probably because I didn't think a Final Fantasy title could be more boring than the original. Phantasy Star really kicked its ass. So I suppose that means I'll be starting from Final Fantasy III. That changes a lot. More on that further down.

Very correct indeed. Yet another thread I really meant to reply to but somehow it got swallowed by the tidal wave of other incoming threads. It is my favourite game so I certainly need to remind myself to do this. Especially given how there will be a lot to look forward to in the Final Fantasy VIII modding scene. When it comes to mods, I'm only really interested in aesthetic mods. I'm not a fan of hardcore mods, for instance. I'd rather keep that memorable experience (aside from making it far prettier) preserved.

I do love Final Fantasy IX, but I must admit that the amount of circle-jerking Final Fantasy VI and IX fans I see in most FF discussions (usually "favourite FF game" threads that nearly always lead to shitting on VIII because of the exact same reasons every time) can be rather tiring. Funny enough I can be a purist about some things so it's hypocritical of me to judge VI fans that way, but I'll do my best when it comes to beating it. Yup, I never have. I played through a lot of it as a kid. As for IX, that'll be great fun but while I'm not a fan of the ways Square-Enix meddled with VII, it is a fantastic game and makes second place in my book. IX, probably third and X fourth.

There are private servers we could play on together for free as well, perhaps we could record it and share a few shennanigans on XI with the forum and then check it off your list when the time comes? Just a thought.
Well... it's an MMO. You can't really complete it like you could a single player game, could you? I've only religiously played one MMO in my life and that was a Chinese game. It was still great, but like many MMOs it didn't really have a proper narrative structure to it. It was just a bunch of quests. Plus, these games can be so addictive. I practically spent most of a summer playing that Chinese game. Even if it has a narrative, MMO games are designed to keep you on the hook after that.

I think at this point I can consider a revised plan. (Or for the time being anyway if there's a chance you'll change my view on MMOs.) Oh yeah, I was on the fence about this, but I think I'll be playing the DS versions (ported to PC/Steam) of some older FF titles. In part this is because Final Fantasy IV's 3D version has the After Years sequel. The story won't feel complete without that. Final Fantasy V and VI on PC have graphics mods. If you remember the god-awful graphics from the mobile and PC re-releases of those games, they'll have nice sprites. Anyhow...

2020: Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy IV and After Years, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy V

2021: Final Fantasy VI, Spin-off/non-main, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII

2022: Final Fantasy IX, Spin-off/non-main, Final Fantasy X and X-2, Final Fantasy XII

2023: Spin-off/non-main, Final Fantasy XIII Series, Final Fantasy XV

2024: Final Fantasy VII Remake: Part 1, Final Fantasy VII Remake: Part 2 (????), Whatever Else

You may have noticed that there are only three in 2023. This is because there are many games in the probably-excruciating playthrough of all XIII's games. I'm allowing myself two quarters for it. My Final Fantasy progress won't feel complete without subjecting myself to those.

Given how we're fairly close to halfway through Q1, I should start my Final Fantasy III playthrough after I complete a couple more games on my list. I do hope I'll enjoy it. Come to think of it I think I did play a few hours of III when I was younger. Is that the one with the dragon in the intro? (Can't remember much.)

Time to simmer down for a while so Mantis' gaming thread can get back on-topic. Feel free to go gunk mine up with banter though, I don't mind (his is better curated than mine and I feel like we're junking it up a bit).

So you're the go-to guy when it comes to pelvic thrusts? I'll make a note of that for any newcomers who may be interested. I also found some threads you may find relevant, such as this one. Maybe we should watch a police anime one day.

Speaking of which, I completed another SWAT 4 mission tonight. Holy crap this one took ages. I failed a couple of times. Software company's offices. Called Red Letter, it's a pretty big building. I was dealing with a gang of robbers in a hostage situation. I wasn't briefed that well. I suspected to find maybe five or six suspects. To my surprise there were about 30 people, with over half of them being suspects.

Due to the potential number of hostages, I decided that my team went in with suppressed weaponry but made the error of not equipping them with much CS gas. I decided against flash and sting grenades because of the noise. When I started running out of CS gas it got pretty messy when I had to do lots of open and clears without any proper defence. Although, on one occasion, I spooked a suspect by opening and closing a door. Then I got my team to place a wedge. While the suspect was busy fiddling with the door I blew him away (obviously with my team at a safe distance) using C-4.

The mission took a lot longer than it should have because the suspects really did a number on all of my limbs pretty early on so I was limping most of the way. Good thing I had a team to command! Nonetheless that was good fun.
