OK, I guess I'm not that far off from you afterall. Sadly, I didn't get around to playing tonight due to laziness but I intend to pick it up again tomorrow night. I did some reading on some old guides on gamefaqs (Which, miraculously, is still around) so I had some idea of how to approach the game. It seems straightforward for the most part (Keep your offensive dudes in the front and keep the healers/magic users in the back), though I have a feeling that you'll need to mix that up in the later parts of the game. Even after that, there are still things I'm trying to get a hang of. For example, I was too stupid at the time to relize that Nall had a bunch of items on her/him/it that had herbs and even an item to replenish MP. I would grind in the cave for awhile, head back to town and then get that kid in that one house to replenish everything. Man, that would've made some of those fights simple, especially against those snowman pricks. I tried to run away from that a few times but I still end up getting stuck in that fight (Does luck determine the likely hood of you running from a fight).

But yeah, good shit I must say.

The Luck stat may influence your ability to run from fights (in some games it does, in some games it doesn't) but more than likely it determines item drops and Silver obtained from battle. I put in another hour to hour and a half tonight (because I'll be busier tomorrow through this weekend). Don't worry about being a bit behind me, I padded a bit because I assume you'll play during the weekend while I'm busy with FF VII.

I got through the cave, did some stuff back in town and then went through the next zone as well. In these instances where I'm ahead of you I won't spoil anything, but let me say that a character will offer to assist you for a battle. Nothing changes if you accept his help, so go ahead and accept it. After finishing the 2nd zone, I explored the world map a bit and saved. All characters level 11.

I've been playing the game for the past 2 hours so I know exactly who you're talking about...our homeboy Laike. Holy damn, he was a beast. I wish he became a permanent party member. I think I got all my characters to your level as well. I got to Saith and got new equipment for Alex and Luna (Can't wait to try out the longsword and go Kingdom Come: Deliverance on some asses, especially now that Alex gets two attacks.). I didn't get any for Ramus because, from what I remember anyway, he eventually leaves your group so I figured it'd be a waste of cash to give him new stuff...unless, would that be a good idea to do that anyway?

Oh yeah, funny story. When in Saith, I talked to an female NPC who talked about how attractive Alex is and asked if she can go on the adventure with him. Of course, I choose the option to ask her to come along because I'd like to make Alex a goddamn chad which pissed off Luna but let's face it, deep down she wants all 12 inches of Alex.

    That's 12 inches minimum.
Good to hear you put in a bit more time and we're still on the same page. I actually went up north to the Old Hag's Woods, did you go directly to Saith? When you hook around that mountain range, you can go South to Saith or North to Old Hag's Woods which is sort of a side area. I don't remember what's in there, I just saved at the entrance. Next time I play (probably tonight) I'll do whatever there is to be done in the Hag's Woods, then complete Saith as well. Don't worry about spoiling me for the next 5-ish hours of gameplay because I've been several towns beyond Saith on a previous attempt.

Judging by a Longplay I found on YouTube of a guy who plays slower than me, the game is just under 20 hours long. Fyi. Which is shockingly short for a JRPG. My current save file on Octopath Traveler is 58 hours and I haven't done any sidequests or grinding.

That said, Lunar was originally a Sega CD game and most JRPGs were shorter at the time. When you mentioned an emulator, I assume you're emulating the PS1 version? How are you liking those brutally cheesy cutscenes and in-game dialogue?

Side note: Have you tried any of the "Tales of" games? Once we're done with Lunar, you may want to look into those because it seems to fit with what you're told me in the past. The battle system is fully active, you don't pick things from menus, you map attacks to your controller and can run around in an arena during each fight, doing combos and such. It's a lot more like a frantic fighting game than an RPG battle system, although there is HP/MP and EXP. It may be the perfect blend for you to enjoy cheesy anime & a good story, but without the sluggish battles that may otherwise bore you in most series.

I haven't tried the Old Hag's woods just yet. I figured it'd probably be wise to get some new equipment just to make the encounters there more easy. But yeah, I'm playing the PS1 version of the game. It's kind of funny to hear Alex talk because he has like the single most stereotypical, young anime protagonist voice I've ever heard and Luna's singing just consists of her going "La la lalaLAAAA". Was that how she sung in the original Japanese language track? Still, the voice acting is fairly decent at least when you compare it to a lot of the games that were out at the time. I never played the Sega CD version myself but I do recall my brother had that version as well and watched him play it when I was really young. I think there was differences in how the story was presented. Wasn't Alex more of a silent protagonist in that version?

I've been meaning to get into the "Tales of" series. I know we talked about me playing of Legend of Legendia awhile ago in another thread I think. I did enjoy that game and I would like to try the others at some point. Do you have a recommendation as to which game to start with?

I absolutely do! If you want to play a new one, Tales of Berseria is the best of the 'newer' Tales of games. If you're willing to cherry-pick the best out of the series, that'll be Tales of Symphonia & Tales of the Abyss.
they're from roughly the same time period, but one was a Gamecube game (should run fine on a Dolphin emulator if you don't have a GameCube) and Tales of the Abyss is PS2. Abyss has the better story & main character, but Symphonia has the better overall cast. The battle systems are very similar, there wasn't a lot of iteration between the two. If you enjoyed Legendia you'll LOVE these. Legendia is considered one of the weakest in the series, so you have a bright future ahead!

I would absolutely dive back in on a fresh playthrough of Symphonia with you (sometime after Lunar) because I don't think I've personally been past the 2/3 point. With Abyss I think my save file is at the final boss room and I don't want to throw away that progress.

Are you considering Lunar 2 after Lunar, btw?

Amazed that you're actually getting Starwind55 to play JRPGs and he's liking the experience. It's as if with the right words, we could even get a different member to enjoy something else, like live action series.

    Let's stay on topic

edit: This was starwind's idea, btw. I didn't convince him with any words at all!

    *Whew* Brawl averted.

Yeah, I went with Lunar just because I had a past with it so it was something I was gonna revisit at some point anyway. Although I admit it is fun to play something new alongside someone who has more experience with the genre than I do. I'm actually tempted on, somewhere down the line, to a journey of classic FPS. I think Zem said he did play Duke Nukem 3d back in the day (Correct me if I am wrong about this) so I'd think it'd be cool to do something similar to that

Well, I already have a PS2 emulator so I'm tempted to go with Tales of Abyss, though I'm sure it probably isn't hard to get the dolphin emulator. Perhaps I'll flip a coin to determine which one to go with first though we'll have plenty o' time to decided. I take it you're probably busy with the FF7 remake? How are you liking it so far. I'm not gonna lie, I'm tempted to get it. It looks like Final Fantasy 7 but with over the top, real time Metal Gear Rising style combat. It'll take me awhile to get to it since I'm planning on getting either Nioh 2 or Sekiro somewhere down the line.

Speaking of RPGs with real time combat, you ever heard of a game called Granstream Saga? I don't know if I ever brought this up to you so I apologize if I come across like a broken record but it was a pretty cool RPG where the combat sections turn into something like an overhead fighting game. It was simplistic but I recall it being kind of fun. Might be worth checking out sometime.

Anywho, I'll probably be getting back with Lunar here soon. Was busy working all day and grocery shopping and jamming out to Stvore's new album so I'll be hopping to it here shortly.

Yep, I'm well aware of Granstream Saga, but I'll be playing the earlier games in the "series" first: Soul Blazer & Terranigma

I put series in quotes because they're all spiritual successors more than direct sequels. They're all the work of the same director and there are minor threads connecting them to one-another, but you needn't play the earlier releases unless you're a purist like me. I just got my reproduction cart of Terranigma about 3 weeks ago, so it's in the backlog. I still need to pick up a copy of Soul Blazer, but that game is quite cheap to this day so I'll grab one on eBay when I'm ready to start on the Soul Blazer series.

Now for a progress update (nothing on Lunar, sorry! FF7R came out!)

       60% Final Fantasy VII Remake

I've heard that the game has 18 Chapters, I just finished Chapter 10 last night.
