    RE: Outlaw Star UK Smilies

Just took a go at the Awkward and Crying smilies. They probably look like shit, but here they are:
    - Just shifted the eyes to be looking away. I find myself doing that in awkward situations.
    - Added shading of sorts. Probably looks crap, but at the same time it's better than a flat colour. I think.
"It turned out that the ghost was just Mr. Finley, who ran the amusement park. The spooky part is that, as soon as the ghost appeared, the teenagers' dog began to speak! And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

Try having the WTF smiley with his mouth open, like he's in shock.

Possibly make the grin smiley's eyes as lines like the tend to do in some Anime. - - for example.

Everything else is solid as far as I can see

The awkward edit is perfect actually, Baron. Thanks, can't believe it didn't cross my mind. As for the crying edit, it looks better, but the main problem I had with it is still apparent. It's mostly how the eyes look. Perhaps I should make less of the eyes visible. I don't think it should be too hard to make an animation of the crying being like a jet stream either, lol. I'll have a crack at it.

Grimm, I'd agree, but you'll see below the smiley it replaces.

However, I can't type it out as it's changed to the smiley, unless...

    Code:
    o_O
This is an odd one. Clearly, going by the ASCII, it's a blank-faced expression. Blank in the sense that the person is stunned. And the mouth is straight. However, if we look at the current smiley graphic shown above, the mouth shape is indeed a little comparable to a gasp. So I'm on the fence on this one. I think I ought to watch a few episodes and keep my eyes open for Gene making any similar expressions, including the grin.
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

    RE: Outlaw Star UK Smilies

So I worked on the crying smiley for an hour. After playing more Phoenix Wright tonight, something caught my eye—one of the animations of a character crying in a rather comical way. Just what I needed, I thought. So I figured I'd try and adapt to the same style. Except it hasn't been as easy as I thought it would, given the few pixels I've had to work with. I dunno, I enjoyed making it, but I don't know if it's the style I'm looking for.

    Reference:

    New smiley:

    Compare with:
Gene: "Have faith in me guys, enjoy the ride—you're in good hands. I can handle this. I can do it!"
    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."

    RE: Outlaw Star UK Smilies

    Animated clearly works better.

Had a swipe at the shades image, more basic lighting effects here, this time on the lenses:

It's really difficult to see if it makes much of a difference though given the size. Oh well. I think it's visible enough, and to be honest I can't think of anything else that needs changing.[hr]
Alright, so I also had a couple of 'lazy' attempts at the others too. And here they are:
    - Bags under the eyes, slightly pink tone to the eyes, even skin colour. Admittedly he looks more undead than sick, but with these dimensions it's not as simple as it should be.
    - When all else fails, go for those generic Japanese 'happy eyes'. I think it's worked.
    - The other way of expressing confusion... jury's out on this one, but I like it enough to put it here.

    RE: Outlaw Star UK Smilies

I think the shades smiley looks better with the lighting, so I think I'll use it, cheers. Generally speaking I go with flat shading for these smilies, but on surfaces that are particularly shiny, extra shading works well. Does the right lens really not appear bigger to you? It sometimes does to me due to the scar/lens pixels being diagonally adjacent. But if it's not noticeable to most of the forum's members, it's pretty much a non-issue.

As for the crying smiley, whilst it does look better animated I've decided not to use my new animation, simply because it doesn't work at such a low resolution. It was a good experience to create it though, so it wasn't a complete waste of time. I'm just not sure what to go with. The cry has to look comedic/non-serious since you wouldn't see Gene crying except in a comedy scene. Hmmm. Well, I ought to move onto the other smilies whilst I'm pondering that.

Can't say the lenses really look any different to each other, maybe I'm just noticing the difference in colour between the lens and the scar.

As for the crying one, I'll have another piss-around with it and do something with the eyes. Perhaps more 'generic Japanese expression' is needed to make it look more convincing.

Sorry I'm late to the party! Loving all the smilies.

I agree with Baron that the animated crying smiley is better, though I'm also partial to the second one. Animated is more humorous, though!

If I had one thing to say about The Fred Luo smiley, his hair looks asymmetrical. I know it's a WIP, but I thought I would give out my input nonetheless.

    RE: Outlaw Star UK Smilies

FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU, I didn't notice your edit Baron! And for god's sake TinyPic, Y U NO KEEP MY UPLOADS AFTER LESS THAN A BLOODY WEEK?! I seriously think they're going out of business if they can't keep perfectly fine (and very low in file size) images on their server, not to mention the fact they're putting more ads on their site. Too bad ImageShack is even suckier now. Well, moving on...

Baron: Excellent work as I'd expect. You're pretty good at this. The grin smiley is quite amazing. The sick smiley is decent, although I'm on the fence with regard to which I prefer. I think I prefer the mouth on mine to an extent, or at least if I created a mix of the two. Having the tooth there is more faithful to the forum's current smiley. The skin tone on yours certainly makes the whole illness look more apparent, although I do think it's slightly garish, a little radioactive kinda. Perhaps with a little bit of desaturation it would work. The changes to the eyes are spot on.

Your confusion/WTF edit is decent, but I do feel it creates more of a look of aggression than confusion. However, my own attempts since have been futile at best. I've tried to create the very odd look the smiley has—i.e. oddly-shaped facial features whilst maintaining some kind of personality. Anyway, here's all I could come up with, I know it sucks: Also, now I'm giving imgur a try for image hosting. I'll put it to the test and see how long it takes for them to delete my uploads.

Edit: By the way, I was basing the above futile attempt more on the actual ASCII appearance of the smiley below.

    Code:
    o_O
Somasol: Glad you're liking them. I'll try and come up with a new crying animation. Whilst the current one is amusing, unless you know it's a crying smiley in the first place, it's easy to imagine that people would think it's two arms or something rather than tears, unfortunately. I really hope you're joking about the Fred Luo smiley. XD I was only focusing on basic facial features and the hair was something I whipped up in ten seconds in order to give him some kind of hair, even if it looked crap. I'm very aware it is not symmetrical! To be honest with you, I wanted to get a basic Fred Luo smiley made so I could make an animation of Gene and Fred as beer buddies, but I've put that on hold until the core Gene smilies are finished.

Oh, and Baron, finally I should say that if you don't have a good program for editing animated GIFs, I can send you one that's quite lightweight and handles GIFs and pixel art in general pretty well.

Blegh, I can't actually believe I've been racking my brains for the past hour over such a simple thing: the wink smiley. The problem lies in the fact that the normal eyes are two pixels high. A wink would typically show one eye as normal, and the other closed. (That's enough for tonight, Captain Obvious.) But there can't be a centre point when there are only two pixels in height, which is what is needed for a straight closed eye. I've tried making the open eye look different (like how Baron styled the eyes for the grin smiley), but it just doesn't look right. Anyway, here's the shitty wink smiley.

I need to get a wink of sleep tonight unlike last night, so I'll continue this tomorrow. Pixel art sometimes is like a puzzle game, in a sense. It's amazing how just shifting around literally a few pixels can create an entirely different expression.
