RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

I said I'd write the IRC guide tonight, but I've had a lingering bad headache and I really don't feel up to it. So, tomorrow it will be. I'm sure you guys who can't get on will survive for another day.

RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

Wow, I completely forgot about the IRC guide, but I'm surprised most aren't consulting Google. Unfortunately, my laptop has once again come down with a case of the unexpected shutdowns. I will have to leave it alone for a while. In the meantime I have installed Tapatalk on my phone but need to install support for this forum... using this phone. That might prove difficult. I have a netbook hopefully coming this way by the end of this week. I bought it to run it as a Hackintosh for game dev purposes, but I suppose it would make a good emergency Internet device.

I have installed support for Tapatalk, which is available for most modern mobile phones. I'm posting using it now and it is much easier. I'll make an official announcement in the near future. I suggest installing Tapatalk for your phone. It's awesome.

RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

A few days back I mentioned receiving a pretty cool package from a friend in China. I didn't get round to adding the pictures, though. I took quite a few photos, so this isn't a bandwidth-light post, but I guess it's too late to warn you about that.

First up, the sweets and chocolates. The fruit-flavoured sugary sweets reminded me of the UK's Fruit Pastilles, but she has since told me they're from a company in Sweden or something. I'm officially confused. The lollipops were nice.

We don't get many Hershey's chocolates in the UK, so it's nice to get a Chinese version.

This toy is an interesting little thing. You slide the thick end of the wooden stick down its back, and, you guessed it... it croaks.

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-amy3-jpg

My friend lives in Chengdu, which is known by many as the "Home of the Giant Pandas", and she has also sent me this which she got presumably from the breeding centre mentioned in the Wikipedia article.

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-amy4-jpg

This vial she sent me has a grain of rice inside with my name written on it. Although it's awesome, I was a bit perplexed at first by the note that came with it because she had written rice like "tice". Anyway, this alone is a great gift, although you can't see my name in this photograph.

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-amy5-jpg

She told me she'd send me some of her art in her next delivery. She didn't tell me she'd send a whole sketchpad of it which I'm quite impressed by. I've only taken photos of a selection of the sketches. This is some nice manga-style art.

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-amy6-jpg

...whereas these two are more traditional artwork. I think she has a good level of talent. I'm a little jealous actually, since I'm only just taking my first steps into seriously learning how to draw.

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-amy7-jpg

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-amy8-jpg

I'm not sure if you can read it, but it says "A Street Cat Named Bob". Like my cat, it's a ginger tabby, but I wasn't aware of this particular cat before. Apparently, the scarf he is wearing was sewn for him in China, or something like that. I think she messed up the grammar on the 7up page. But, I'm glad she remembered 7up being one of my favourite drinks.

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-amy9-jpg

That cat next to the 7up? It happens to be hers! Despite her message, maybe she thinks of herself as a kid, but I sure as hell wish I could consider myself one.

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-amy10-jpg

She did a brilliant job with this Dragon Ball drawing. As a matter of fact, it's even getting me wanting to watch the series, though I'll probably watch the watered down version. Kai, or something?

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-amy11-jpg

Not only does she know that I love 7up, but also what my favourite anime series is:

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-amy12-jpg

This is probably one of the most amazing set of gifts I've ever been given. I didn't even take a photo of everything. She also sent me many postcards of some amazing places in China. It's like my birthday or Christmas come early. Sure, I've been given gifts with more material value before, but almost nothing with as much thought, effort and kindness as this. I'd much prefer this than a £30 voucher or game, for instance.

There's only one problem. Being a guy and all (best excuse in the book), it's not so easy to think of decent stuff to send to her in the near future. Not to mention, China and where she lives in general seem a lot more interesting than this hole. I'm going to have to spend a little time thinking about this. Honestly, I can't think of many souvenirs I can buy that weren't made in China in the first place. Hmmm. Well, I'd ask for ideas, but I guess this is something I should figure out myself.

Pretty good gifts you got there Mantis; good luck on your gift ideas for her. I've been with my fiance for over 7 years and I still can't figure out what to get her for her birthday.

Well, I wouldn't compare it to buying gifts for a girlfriend since we're just friends. But I guess it's not much easier since it's a universal fact that women in general are a pain to think of gifts for. Hmm, updates. Well, I got an iControlPad for my phone which makes it very awesome for emulation since I can hold it like a handheld console with a full set of buttons and analogue nubs. I've also delved into the world of Mass Effect. I'm sort of kicking myself for not paying attention to the game when I first got my 360 since it is fantastic.

RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

I have a pretty snazzy desk... to be delivered, that is. Unfortunately, the seller of the desk pushed back the collection date. Now I'm trying to get through to some courier services to see if any would be willing to deliver on a Sunday, tomorrow. I've tried about ten so far. One of them only delivers between France and the UK, yet for some reason unknown to me their business is listed on the local directory, and another wanted an extortionate payment. Two of them had modem sounds when I called them. Christ, who is still on 56k in urban areas? The rest went through to a default answer machine. I know Saturday isn't a standard day to get through to a business, but can't they at least record a custom answer machine message to sound a little more professional?

Edit: I found one guy who gave me a very reasonable deal. Tomorrow will be a good day for mantiskind.

    Journal, long time no see.

In general, things have been pretty uneventful lately as far as that thing called life goes. In late 2012 I got my own apartment at last. I'll have to post some kind of tour sometime. The place needs a good tidying since I'm rearranging a lot of things very shortly. Obviously, lately I've been making the long-delayed forum you're on now, and it's still not done. (I have a few features to add.) But I've also been busy with some business which has distracted me from that.

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-jthegame1-jpg

I established a business last year, called Blue Mantis Games. This summer I'm finally going to get very serious with the first games, but I've also done a few jobs for clients in the meantime. This is one of them. It's a companion app for a card game called Japanese: The Game. I've been a bit stressed for the past few days. The app is on the Google Play Store for Android devices and I was just about to release the much-delayed iPhone/iPad version when a huge bug just appeared. Without going into technical details, I've had to consult a couple of coders and pay for a fix to the bug since it was out of my hands. I still haven't finished applying it but I really hope it'll work. Soon my client will be making the same kind of card game for Mandarin. Although I want to focus on my game projects, it's nice to have some extra money coming in so I can fund them.

Did I forget to mention that I got a cat originally called Melfina?

When I bought him I was told he was female. I guess it made sense to call him Melfina, but a couple of weeks later I was told by the vet it's a he, so that's how he got named Mel.

I can't think of much else to write and I should be going to bed soon. I hope my parcel from Japan comes tomorrow. You can guess what's in it! It's not all Outlaw Star though, but I have about 1000% as much merchandise as I did when I closed OSUK. So, the lack of interesting stuff to write about is a good summary of my life at the moment! More stuff needs to happen, and maybe it will, especially in my business.

    Journal, we meet again.

I've not visited here in a few days which I've felt a little bit annoyed by, but I'm glad to see a fair flow of activity and that everybody has behaved! Today is a special day for two reasons!

    • It's the hottest day in England in a decade, with temperatures down south reaching nearly 37°C (99°F)
    • Today (in the next hour I hope) I'm going to announce the competition winners

First of all, the main thing that's been keeping me busy is the app I've been working on. Not only have I released the new version now, but I've also submitted the app to Apple for the first iPhone release. There's still some more work to do for another client, but I can rest a bit now since the main hurdle is cleared. And what a great day to acknowledge that most of this is over, since I said that summer will be the season of game development for me this year.

The heat is quite bad, but I have said to others that I want to move somewhere hot in future so I've not really complained about it. My reasoning is that I'm surviving okay at my desk here at 30°C with no air conditioning, so if I move somewhere where this is standard with good air conditioning, I'll be laughing. I love this weather, because I love the sun. Nice skies are often rare in the UK. Regardless, Mel isn't handling this so well (often panting), so for his sake (okay, it's a bit of an excuse) I ordered this evaporative air cooler:

    The Misadventures of a Mantis-klarsteincooler-jpg

As powerful as an air conditioner? Hell no, but I live in a flat/apartment and I can't get an air conditioner, so this is the next best thing. I hear it works pretty well. You just load water/ice into it and let it do its thing.

I'd better do my thing (and allow the number randomiser to do its thing) and get the competition results out now.
