Hope you get better soon, getting sick and missing lectures during the semester can really create problems.

Good to hear your chair came in though, I'm jealous =o

RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

I like the tilt functionality on the chair. I can lean back like a slob easily. Anyway...

Today I did a lot of work with YouTube. I got more episodes up on my channel and added a background, but unfortunately the background may not fully show for those with a horizontal screen resolution of lower than 1400. This can be rectified by reducing the size of the elements. However, there's only so much space between the borders and the edge of the screen, so I'd be compromising the readability of the text and how much I can fit on. And I want that text there, because it's all about shameless self-promotion of this forum! XD

I've also fixed a bug on the forum that's been a problem for a long time. When members sent items to another member, the recipient was told that they sent themselves the item. That's resolved, and it will correctly say who the item was sent by. So now you can enjoy the peace of mind that sending greasy burgers to newcomers won't result in epic confusion. Now I'm heading to bed, but I look forward to possibly creating more achievements and ranks for the forum tomorrow, and also adding two new threads to the merchandise section: an Outlaw Star t-shirt I own, and a bootleg DVD that's very interesting.

    Stay tuned!

RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

Long time, no update, old diary of mine. Over the past week I haven't posted nearly as much as I normally would. I'm usually not really one to go into the specifics of my life, but I've had some things to deal with lately. I actually feel pretty guilty about neglecting this site. There are so many things I have to do. I know I have the time to do them as well.

But I'm sure we all know how it is...

"On nights when I can't settle down no matter what,
I just want to throw anything and everything away.
Don't bitch and complain, just open the door, ya know.
I don't have time to quibble with you!"

I'll be more active soon enough, rest assured. I appreciate any posts other members make in the meantime as I don't want the community to come to a standstill. I'm not gone. I just need to figure out some things in my life for a little while, so I'll still pop by a bit.

RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

Well, the good news is that I've done some sweet things with the site since my last update, and whilst it probably wasn't destined to ever have a constant flow of new member registrations, some pretty awesome ones have emerged. And I shall continue this journey. I could do with continuing the site tour tonight which I put off a little. (To be fair, it's often not possible for me to speak loudly due to my parents' irregular sleeping hours, but I have procrastinated a bit too.)

I do, however, feel like chilling out a little by playing Alan Wake. Yes, that's right. Scary games help me chill out. There aren't many forms of escapism that are comparable to having maniacs chasing you with the intent of hacking you to bits, and I like that. Whilst Alan Wake isn't the scariest game around, it does have a few edge-of-seat moments and horror games help me feel alive. As Tony Almeida from my favourite American TV show 24 once said: "Some people are more comfortable in hell."

And heck, I sure do feel like some escapism after spending a whole day travelling across the country for a simple goddamn check-up. Because of England's NHS being so anal about trivial matters, you need to go through some stupid procedures to get yourself "transferred" from one location to another, which is problematic if you're returning to your home from university. And it's my uni's town I had to travel to today.

Since I had to wait for my train I figured I'd visit a few charity shops to see if I could hunt some decent retro game bargains. I found nothing of interest. Instead, I returned home with a Yorkie bar and a 2L bottle of Dr. Pepper. Also, the weather was miserable today, but that's hardly groundbreaking news. I know what is. My web host sucks. Oh wait.

So you'll be waiting a while for the wiki since they can't be arsed with some simple post-year-2000 server software upgrades which are required for the wiki I had in mind.

Edit: Wait, this is a time to celebrate! My 2000th post, sweeeet! Follow in my footsteps, guys. ;-)

RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

Alright, so, as I've explained elsewhere I recently upgraded my computer a little. From 3GB of RAM to 8GB. It was supposed to be 11GB as I was going to use the 3GB of RAM with the 8GB, but they don't play nice together. So 8GB will do for now. I've got the special green edition of the NVIDIA GTX 460, which uses less juice but has a couple of disadvantages. For instance, the standard GTX 460, if memory serves, has two DVI ports. Mine only has one. It does have a HDMI port though as you'd expect. That brings me to today's news; a purchase I recently made. And what a purchase.

For £250 I've managed to get myself three 22" 3D Samsung monitors (I love Samsung) and an NVIDIA 3D graphics kit with glasses, which my card fully supports. These monitors only have one DVI port. Now, what I said about my graphics card. I can convert HDMI to DVI with a cable, but since I only have one NVIDIA graphics card my PC will only be able to handle two of these monitors at once. As for the third one, I don't know what I'm going to do with it. Maybe wall mount it and use it with my Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 supports some 3D games and my soon-to-be-possessed NVIDIA glasses should work with it. I should be able to again use a cable to convert the X360's HDMI to DVI and then use the AV port for sound.

Or maybe I will wait until I can afford a custom rig so I can have two graphics cards and use four screens at once. In fact, as it is I can use three screens if you count my 7" Samsung USB monitor.

Pics of the three monitors and the glasses provided by the seller. He has a sweet setup:

    Lizard not included, sadly...

Lizard's installing stuff for your PC.

    Or browsing for lizard porn.

Either way, that looks like an amazing setup. Pity about your RAM though. Atleast you've got 8!

RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

Well, tonight I first of all tested out a Wii emulator (also emulates GameCube) called Dolphin. I was impressed and I look forward to playing GameCube and Wii games in HD, though not every game is well supported. I also downloaded the Battlefield 3 beta. I had to wait half an hour to be able to actually connect to a server, which I suppose is to be expected, but let's face it. It isn't a beta. That's just a marketing ploy to get people rushing to play it. It's out in a few weeks. Since they have to get the game out for production and have it shipped to retailers, the game's already done.

As for the game itself, let me say first that the only Battlefield game I've played is Battlefield 1943. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a small game as it only had a few maps, but they had me hooked for ages. Awesome vehicles, decent weapons. Sure, you had campers, but unlike CoD it was often a lot easier to outsmart them, and bullets weren't quite as heat-seeking. I'd only watched one small video of BF3 so I didn't know what to expect. I was disappointed. It felt exactly like MW2. Constantly picked off by people with annoying gamertags like XxSniPEr1337357xX who have all the best weapons that you will only get by playing and increasing rank.

In 1943, this wasn't an issue if memory serves. You could get rank increases but they didn't affect anything except your personal profile. Honestly, it just feels like this whole MW3/BF3 thing is a pissing match between the two companies. I don't know which game series imitated which first (BF or CoD) but damn, seriously, I got bored. The only game I can see myself buying at launch this year is Skyrim. I'm going to call it a night now. That's my venting over.

RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

Well, tonight I forayed into the world of PHP, and made a code edit on the forum which took the whole site down. Er, oops. I was talking to Dr. Killjoy at the time it went down and was sure it was a coincidence that as soon as I uploaded the edit, bam, crashed like the Hindenburg. Slightly abridged version of our chat.

Mantis: Outlaw Star UK seems to be down.
    Dr. Killjoy: asdfasdfasdf
Mantis: Do you experience the same problem?
    Dr. Killjoy: 'fraid so =(
    Mantis: Hmm, weird.
Mantis: It was just after I uploaded a code edit too.
Mantis: But that couldn't have caused the problem.
    Mantis: No way.
    Dr. Killjoy: i'd say there's probably a connec-oh?
Mantis: It was just an edit to the Tenrei post limit code.
Mantis: This is my first time working with PHP... ever.
Mantis: And my first time coding in a damn while. But the edit is very simple anyway.
Mantis: The difference is that it warns the member on the ninth post. Or whatever I set the max as minus one.
    Mantis: Which is currently ten.
    Dr. Killjoy: right
Dr. Killjoy: i haven't done much with php, but i don't see anything here that should break the forum
Mantis: Exactly. Which is crazy really.
Mantis: Because it was the second I uploaded it.
    Mantis: Boom.
    Mantis: Ajax Chat went crazy.
Dr. Killjoy: i guess all i can say is
Dr. Killjoy: upload the old version and see if that works
Mantis: I can't even connect to FTP.
    Dr. Killjoy: asdfasdfasdf
Mantis: Ah, just under two months away until I'll make the move to the American server.
    Dr. Killjoy: uhmmmmmm
    Dr. Killjoy: SSH IN
Mantis: Unlimited disk space, bandwidth, and no restrictions. (Within reason, but the Dreamhost guys are really helpful.)
    Mantis: Lmao, SSH.
Dr. Killjoy: Outlaw Star UK on an american server
Mantis: They had PHP4 installed until I asked them to change it.
    Dr. Killjoy: now that's irony
Mantis: PHP5 was released in 2004 or something.
Mantis: And yeah, it is. XD
    Dr. Killjoy: ...wow
Mantis: But I've gotta be economic.
    Dr. Killjoy: right
Mantis: I'm already paying for this American hosting.
Mantis: Even though I seldom use it. Well, now I will.
Mantis: I'll let you know when it's back up and if the code actually works...
    Dr. Killjoy: alright, good luck
    Mantis: Thanks
Dr. Killjoy: i know how much of a pain in the ass these bugs can be D=
Mantis: Yep. >_< More so than me, though I should start learning how to code again.
Mantis: Dammit, definitely my bad coding.
Mantis: Replacing my edit with the original version fixed it.
Mantis: And then after disabling it and re-upping my edit, a wild MISSINGNO appeared.
    Mantis: Right...
    Mantis: Will PM the dev.
Dr. Killjoy: Mantis: It was just after I uploaded a code edit too.
    - Mantis: But that couldn't have caused the problem.
    - Mantis: No way.
    Dr. Killjoy: =P
Mantis: Hm, now that's a funny coincidence.
Mantis: The ID of the Tenrei forum is the same as the episode number.

    tl;dr version:

    It wasn't me... honest.

And now I've wasted so much time tonight, and I have to be up early to get stuff ready and collect my 3D gear. I'm going to do an all-nighter. I sleep like a baby when I finally do fall asleep. It'd take a foghorn to wake me up. So I have no choice. And woo-hoo, I have a spare can of No Fear Energy! Advertisements totally don't affect me! I'm so tursty.

I have some new plans for how things are going to work on this forum too. I'll fill you in on that soon enough.

RE: The Misadventures of a Mantis

    Happy Serious Birthday, Mantis!
"It turned out that the ghost was just Mr. Finley, who ran the amusement park. The spooky part is that, as soon as the ghost appeared, the teenagers' dog began to speak! And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

Thanks, steak is serious business. I just wish it wasn't pissing it down, especially given how it was blazing hot less than a week ago.
