This is just my journal so I'm not going to argue here. I will say that I prefer 8, but I don't think it's a better game. You're free to prefer whichever you like best too, and 7 is a great game that I've replayed as recently as this past Spring! I definitely like it, but I have some really good memories with 8 that puts it first on my list. 9 was my favorite for a long time, but 8 won out for me as an adult. The reasons I like 8 so much have a lot to do with my life at the time I first played it, and nobody else can have the exact experience I had so it's pointless to push on people. I know it's a busted mess, mechanically. I follow FF7 Remake news daily and I already have my pre-order paid so I'm 100% on-board for 7 as well, it's just not my favorite one.
My order goes 8 > 9 (barely) > Tactics > 7. As long as someone's an FF fan then I don't care which they like. Besides, FF8 is Mantis' favorite game as well which he was tactically choosing not to mention
Same goes with Majora's Mask, I get a lot of flak for that being my favorite Zelda game. I have a Majora's Mask thread and FF8 thread in the gaming section of the Heifong sub-forum where we can discuss them or argue about them as much as you want! Whether it's anime or video games, I have a bad habit of enjoying the black sheep of a series or type of media. We're here on an Outlaw Star forum. OLS is considered by a lot of people to be the knockoff Bebop or Trigun, but they're wrong.
...whatever.
Totally understand on all of that! I’m just perpetually looking to start arguments (the fun kind, not actual confrontational ones) lol. And I did lots of thread browsing when I got to OSN, so I was aware that mantis was partial to that one, too.
As for VII remake, right there with ya. Same and same. IX... that game could have been so great, but somehow they did an amazing job fleshing out every single character EXCEPT the main character. Zidane just wasn’t interesting or relatable while every other character felt like they had so much more to them. I hate that, because I loved so many other aspects of the game. The music was so good. When I go to Distant Worlds concerts I’m always praying they’ll pick some of the amazing tracks from that game to do.
Huh, I never noticed that but you're totally right. I grew up with IX, when I moved to PA and our house was still empty (we were unpacking for a good long while) my room just had a mattress, TV, and Playstation for about a week. My Dad knew how bored I must have been, so he drove me to the nearest mom & pop movie rental store and let me pick out a game. I didn't own a single FF game at the time but I had played through most of VIII and watched my neighbor play VII, so when I saw Final Fantasy I snagged that up QUICK. Much like VIII, IX represents a time in my life more so than a video game to me. I never really looked at it with a critical eye, but Zidane is as poorly fleshed out as you claim. The weird Genome stuff somewhere in Disc 4 is practically the only backstory he gets, and he is so confident from the get-go that he doesn't develop much either. He gets sad for like 5 minutes when Garnet becomes Queen because he thinks he won't get to see her much anymore, but is that really development? He sort of sulks about it then he gets what he wants when she rejoins the party. He doesn't need to overcome the emotional obstacle or grow in any meaningful way.
@Zemekis What was the name of your degree course if I may ask?
I studied Computer Science (Software Development) for 2 years before switching to Business Management for my undergraduate degree. I have a minor in Computer Science.
After that, I immediately went to graduate school and got an MBA. Now I work as a Business Consultant & Database Admin.
I got an envelope from Mantis today! Actually, it arrived a few days ago but I've been too busy to check my mail so I hadn't seen it until today. We've sent mail back and forth in the past but this was a nice surprise. I think he mentioned sending it but it took about 12 days to arrive so it had slipped my mind. A FFVIII-themed New Year's card & a few postcards from his neck of the woods. I'm moving on Friday so it's quite lucky that he sent it when he did or else this international mail would have gotten caught up in our mail forwarding system and........it would have been a mess.
I guess that's a good update since I last posted an actual journal entry here: I bought a house! I currently live roughly 45 minutes outside Philadelphia (i've shared that before on the forum so I'm not afraid to repeat it. It's also on my Profile page! I bet nobody's ever read it.), but I drive an hour AWAY from Philly each day for work. Why live near Philly and pay super high rent when I could own a house for $500 less per month? Seriousy, my rent is approx. $1,875 and my mortgage is about $1,350. For a 2,050 sq. foot house. Imagine that. I'm looking forward to the extra space for my game room & stereo system/record player. I'll also have a yard so that means less dog walks & more time for myself. Alone time & relaxation time is something I'm seriously lacking. Right up there next to sleep schedules is "down time", something people are always trying to fix about their schedules that they never get around to. I fear that the responsibilities of house ownership will fill up my reduced commute & dog walking time rather quickly.
Glad ya liked it! Your Christmas card has found a place on one of my "shelves of worthy things" since it was the first time in ages I'd received a birthday/Christmas card that's memorable! A private photo of you in drag... that's simply special and was Christmas come early.
I might have said this already, but I'm probably not the only one waiting for an eventual house tour video, when the time comes! It sounds awesome. As for most of your outside-of-work responsibilities...

Congrats on the new home! I remember you showing us pics of that and it's looks pretty damn comfy. With the added space, it should give you some much needed breathing room.
Oh, and you're not backing down on your promise that you were gonna ride a lawnmower on your new lawn wearing shades and holding a monster energy drink. Don't disappoint us.
