RE: [X-COM] Outlaw Star UK fights aliens

Sweet. Despite the promotions not working so well, it's cool to see everything's going smoothly on the front line's. By the way, be sure to back up your screenshots (in case you haven't) as sometimes they'll be removed from TinyPic for no particular reason. Like your last post. I look forward to future progress!

RE: [X-COM] Outlaw Star UK fights aliens

@Mantis Ohhh, thanks for catching that! Luckily I still had the screenshot saved, post is fixed. By the way, prepare to be disappointed promotion-wise again....

    Spoilered for brevity
Attending: BaronOfStuff, Mantis, Nixie-The-Pixie, Masaka, Cuhathol, Diz 2, Nostalgic Wanderer 2, Bloodylilcorpse, Asher, kokirininja

To begin, I'd like to congratulate both kokirininja and Baron. You'll notice, from the roster, that kokirininja is now well enough to return to active combat duty. Furthermore, Baron has finally done something he'd been wanting to do for a long time:

He scored a hit with a chemical torpedo.

Unfortunately, this led to the discovery that chemical torpedoes are terrible. This was a direct hit on a gillman, an alien with little natural armor, that failed to kill it. Fortunately, the gauss rifles proved their worth by making up for this.

Unfortunately, we lost two fine soldiers this mission. Diz 2 was ambushed by a gillman hiding in a wrecked plane to the north...

...and Cuhathol was sniped by the same gillman while attempting to flush it out.

Surveys of the wreck were worrying; it had taken severe damage when it was shot down. Would there be anything salvageable, or had we lost good men for nothing?

Surprisingly, the fuel tank and sections of the fuselage were still intact. We were able to capture a fair amount of aqua plastics and this "zrbite" that the aliens use to power most of their machines.

However, the detectable alien activity in the Caribbean alone is relentless. How much will we be expected to do with a pair of interceptors and a single troop transport?

    KIA: Diz 2, Cuhathol

    Promotions: None

There's a pair of surprises in the next update. You'll probably enjoy one of them. The other...not so much =o

    SEND ME BACK TO MAP32.

I clearly need to re-arm and hunt for hidden Megaspheres. I don't want to be a Chemical Warrior anymore either, as fun as it possibly is to hit my own team-mates with toxic shrapnel.

Other than that, at least I can now shout "NEW KNOWLEDGE GET!"
"It turned out that the ghost was just Mr. Finley, who ran the amusement park. The spooky part is that, as soon as the ghost appeared, the teenagers' dog began to speak! And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

RE: [X-COM] Outlaw Star UK fights aliens

Baron: I was going to make a reference to megaspheres in this mission dialogue, and change your health to 200 and see if anyone noticed, but I decided not to =P

The good news is that we dropped the UFO shown yesterday just west of Chile. The bad news is that with our last mission costing us two soldiers and the new recruits not having had time to arrive, we face an unfortunate shortage of manpower.

Flare will require another three weeks to recover from her wounds. There's no telling how much alien activity we'll see in that timespan.

In face of this, I will participate in the next battle. This still leaves the Triton short one soldier, but salvaging this UFO wreck can't wait.

Because there's still so little we know about the enemy forces, we will attempt to capture at least one alien alive this mission for later interrogation. It's risky, but it must be done.

Attending: BaronOfStuff, Mantis, Nostalgic Wanderer 2, Masaka, Asher, kokirininja, Bloodylilcorpse, Nixie-the-Pixie, Dr. Killjoy

Dr. Killjoy: Oh hey guys, an oversight on my part left us short of equipment. I'll only take a gauss pistol because I wouldn't deprive those under my command of good weapons. Plus it gives me an excuse to hang back and let you all get shot at.

Mantis: Damnit, get out here and fight with the rest of us!
Dr. Killjoy: Uh, no thanks, I think I'll just hang back here and make sure...uh...they don't steal the Triton. Yeah.
Mantis: I don't know if you noticed, but out on the field I'm an ensign and you're only a seaman. I outrank you. Now kill some aliens!
    Dr. Killjoy: *Sigh* Fine.

Nixie: Uhh, speaking of aliens, where are they?

Nixie: I'm looking at my tac-map, but I don't see any UFOs or aliens.

Masaka: Found the sub! Don't see anybody though. Maybe they didn't survive the crash?

Masaka: Knock knock, anybody ho-aquatoid in the corner!
BaronOfStuff: Okay! Tazers out, everyone! Kokirininja, get ready to rush the door with me! Asher and Bloodylilcorpse, keep it busy to the north! Catch it in a pincer, it's got nowhere to r-

    BaronOfStuff: Wait, what?! Ah sh-[hr]

    kokirininja: No! Damnit! Officer down!

kokirininja: Electric current has been applied to the offending alien, and its voluntary motor functions have ceased.

Bloodylilcorpse: Well, at least it's over. The rest of the UFO is vacant, and it doesn't look like the other team found anything outside.
    Masaka: *HURK*

Asher: Masaka's down! Be careful guys, they're still out there!

With one alien captured and two men down, we took no chances with the rest of the aliens.

Each was isolated and hit with all the firepower we could bear.

The tide turned very quickly once we put the stun rods away and verified their positions.

Despite our losses, the mission was a success. Miraculously, we were able to recover an intact engine from the craft.

With the death of Lieutenant BaronOfStuff, Mantis has been promoted. He will take his place as senior officer of the Triton-1.

    KIA: BaronOfStuff, Masaka[hr]
Oops, just realized I screwed up the order of the screenshots, and it's not letting me go back to edit the post. Just pretend it's the tank aiming at that aquatoid where it says Masaka is.

    ...

You made a grave error... You relied on my map reading skills...

    I cannot read maps
You're asking for historical accuracy in a series where men weilding three swords in each hand, pirates surfing across land on giant anchors, horses with motocycle parts attached and feudal-era Power Rangers are the norm?

I go away for one weekend, and you get me killed?

    You're useless!

Mantis: Hell of a way to become an officer, eh?

Nixie: Play lots of games like the Metroid series or Zelda where you have to rely heavily on an ingame map, you'll get better at it! At least, it worked for me....

    Baron:
Funny you should mention uselessness =P

    Spoilered for brevity
February begins, and X-Com's monthly performance evaluation has come in.

Despite crippling technological inferiority, we have won multiple battles against the invaders without suffering a single loss. Our funding nations are duly impressed with our performance.

Despite this, the Euro Syndicate has not increased its contribution, citing complaints that we conscript a disproportionately large amount of soldiers from their populace.

Much of the money has gone to upkeep of weapons and base modules, as well as paying staff, but there is still enough left over to increase our operational capacity. I will be nearly doubling the sizes of our science and engineering teams...

...and building the additional housing and workspace they will need.

I'm pleased to report that the new soldiers have finally arrived, meaning I will no longer be serving on the Triton-1.

Good timing on their part, too. Interceptors were scrambled as soon as this UFO was spotted...

...but it escaped. It seems they've realized that their scout ships are no match for our Barracudas.

A second one wasn't so lucky. It was shot down east of Argentina, and the pilot reported that the wreck seemed mostly intact. You all know what that means....

In case anyone missed it, the reason I gave for the Euro-Syndicate's refusal to increase funding was a reference to this board's large European population =P

RE: [X-COM] Outlaw Star UK fights aliens

    Nixie: Then...uh...play it more!

Attending: Mantis, Stuff Knight, Cuhathol 2, Nostalgic Wanderer 2, Nixie-the-Pixie, Somasol 4, Diz 3, kokirininja, Asher, BloodyLilCorpse

Looking over the soldier dossiers, I received some interesting information.

It seems that our clone of BaronOfStuff has gained his own identity, and as a result insists that he be called Stuff Knight. Fortunately, he appears to be otherwise the same, sharing the original's affinity for alcohol, crude humor, and poorly made player-generated content for DOS-era first-person combat simulators.

I thought I'd do this caption out-of-character to point out that for this mission, the game placed the Triton in the bottom corner of the map, which makes exiting the sub as slow and annoying as possible. Thanks, X-Com!

The debris scattered around the battlefield heavily impeded movement, but the tank was able to speed things up by clearing some of it.

Even so, it was awhile before the crew had contact with the enemy. This gillman (top) barely fits on the tac-map with the Triton.

Killing that gillman sure was a lot easier than finding it.

After all that had happened, deploying Soma here was risky. This clone had done very well on the reaction tests, however, and would be ready to blast anything that came through the door.

Mantis wasn't taking any chances, though.

Come to think of it, I should've thought of this a long time ago. After all, if grenades can destroy UFO doors, so can the tank.

It turned out to be a waste of a missile, though. Where were the remaining gillmen?

The crew began searching around the UFO, and Mantis eventually found it. He fired at the alien but missed...[hr]

...and paid for his mistake with his life.

The alien didn't live to kill again. Aided by cover fire from Cuhathol 2, Diz 3 dropped it with a few shots from an impressive range.

The yield from this UFO was disappointing, especially considering we lost an officer to get it, but it provided us with otherwise unobtainable alien materials.

Diz 3's marksmanship earned him a quick promotion to Ensign. In light of Mantis's death, Nixie has been promoted and given command of the Triton-1.[hr]
EDIT: The name change for BaronOfStuff's clone was at his request. If you have a cloned soldier on the roster and would like me to change his name, go ahead and put in your request.[hr]
