    RE: Master of Orion!

Time to wrap up another LP thread!

    The stars are ours!

We've crushed our rivals. We've captured Orion. All that is left to do now is to make that position official.

Because we didn't hit the Silicoids quite as hard as the Psilons, so they are the ones who will be running against us.

The rest of the galaxy hates us...

...but in the end, it doesn't matter. We singlehandedly carry enough votes to put ourselves in power.

And so, three hundred and twenty-four years after our first colony ship departs, we are masters of the galaxy.

The Alkari couldn't stop us. They were fierce fighters, and their initial blitz put our future in doubt, but in the end we prevailed. Their wars of aggression cost them when they attacked a species that wasn't as merciful as we were.

The Silicoids couldn't stop us. Their rapid expansion to undesirable planets led to them developing an empire of not just unmatched size. This proved to be their undoing, when they lacked the industrial capability to defend their planets.

The Psilons couldn't stop us. They had a decisive edge in technology, and early in the war their weapons were superior to ours. We had greater industrial capacity though, and they learned the hard way that quantity has a quality all in its own.

There is, of course, only one thing to do with a ruling like this.

    We've won.

And now, the art gallery! It's smaller than the one in my X-Com LP, but thanks to Baron and Grimm for contributing!

    Gallery of propaganda and stuff

Okay, Baron actually never posted this to the thread, he sent it as a doodle over MSN. Still, I think it has a place here.

Coming up next: Commentary on -all- of the submitted ship designs![hr]
Commentary: Fegelein, Mimir, Vendetta, Hiroshima, Vendetta II, Fegelein II, Surtr, Baldur, Fegelein III

    THE FEGELEIN (BaronOfStuff)

This one never really had much of a chance to shine. It's a good fighter for the game's early components, but there's only so much creativity the default equipment allows.

    THE MIMIR (Heresiarch Grimm)

Another solid early-game design that never had the chance to do much. Mainly because the Alkari were impossible to hit.

    THE VENDETTA (Heresiarch Grimm)

Another good idea that got shafted by Alkari matrix dodging. Early in the game, when the enemy doesn't have good shields, this should've been a fearsome fighter.

    THE HIROSHIMA (Heresiarch Grimm)

A fairly straightforward, but solid, dedicated bomber. It packed plenty of boom and it softened up Alkari defenses quite nicely for our ground troops.

    THE VENDETTA II (Heresiarch Grimm)

Jackpot! Our first ship to incorporate the neutron pellet guns was also the first one that could effectively engage Alkari ships. Even then it required superior numbers, but its appearance on the frontline marked the day we finally stopped running from their fleets.

    THE FEGELEIN II (BaronOfStuff)

Cheap fighters with NPGs are one of the best ship options in the early game. too bad by the time this one reached the frontline, the war was over, and it became obsolete before the next one.

    THE SURTR (Heresiarch Grimm)

I don't usually put missiles on my bombers, but I have to admit the combination worked pretty well.

    THE BALDUR (Heresiarch Grimm)

Decent firepower, although their real selling point was the fact that these bastards would not die. They put our new armor and shields to good use.

    THE FEGELEIN III (BaronOfStuff)

If the Baldurs were our shield, the Fegelein IIIs were our sword. The only real difference between this design and the Fegelein II is the III is harder to kill, but that meant they could dish out death longer.

    RE: Master of Orion!

Sorry, but I did say nothing more than a double post for LP threads. (And that's a general rule in Heifong, with some having even double seen as unacceptable.)

However, I'll admit I didn't establish proper rules. But since I told Grimm not to post beyond double in LP, I can't make exceptions for others. Since I didn't make this overly clear I won't take any action but will probably create a thread (and threads for what's okay and what's not in other forums) for future reference. You shouldn't count this as a new post either; the posting rule is still in effect. Others should be posting in LP threads too; get others involved. If they're interested they should keep the thread going.

Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

    RE: Master of Orion!

Commentary: Konig, Baldur II, Dreizehn, Dreizehn IA, Baldur IIA, Fegelein IV, Konig II, Baldur IIB, Muspel

    THE KONIG (BaronOfStuff)

It's basically an MLRS IN SPACE, as BaronOfStuff puts it. Since MLRS happen to be my favorite real-life weapons ever, that's fine by me. It wasn't even supposed to be a bomber, but it still did that well in addition to tearing up enemy fleets.

    THE BALDUR II (Heresiarch Grimm)

Never used, scrapped in favor of the faster Baldur IIA. Everything I say about the IIA would apply to this too.

    THE DREIZEHN (Heresiarch Grimm)

I might actually have something to say about this, had it actually entered service. Instead, once we got better engines, it was scrappedi n favor of...

    THE DREIZEHN IA (Heresiarch Grimm)

It was our main damage dealer for awhile, and it performed its role well. I usually forgo heavy beam weapons in favor of more lighter ones, preferring to let my missile launchers do the long-range work. A solid design overall.

    THE BALDUR IIA (Heresiarch Grimm)

Oh wait, this was almost immediately replaced by the IIB because its armor wasn't thick enough.

    THE FEGELEIN IV (BaronOfStuff)

This one stayed in service for awhile, even though by the time it was introduced its neutron pellet guns were probably underpowered. Still, they were the best beam weapons we could use and it proved effective in the enormous numbers we could produce it in.

    THE KONIG II (BaronOfStuff)

Another one that stayed in service for awhile, the Konig II was one of my personal favorites. It did everything the Konig did except better, and its torpedoes meant it never had to stop raining death.

    THE BALDUR IIB (Heresiarch Grimm)

The IIB proved to be just as tough as the original Baldur. Even though in its battles, it gunned for the middle and stayed there, it still took few losses.

    THE MUSPEL (Heresiarch Grimm)

Sorry Grimm, but I'm afraid you dropped the ball on this one - the Konig II was a better bomber than this, and it wasn't even supposed to be one. The space that went to missiles would've been better used on more bombs or a better computer. Although, it's partly my fault because I did a bit of cost-cutting - I could've fit it with a Mark III computer.

    RE: Master of Orion!

Ah well, I can't get everything right. I think the idea for the Muspel was to have it act as a long range bomber and if the situation lightened up it could move in and deliver it's payload.

    RE: Master of Orion!

Mantis: I'M TRYING TO GET OTHERS INVOLVED DAMNIT

AND I CAN ONLY HAVE 10 IMAGES PER POST =P

Commentary: Kaiser, Baldr, Fegelein V, Surtr, Kreuzer, Zerstoerer

    THE KAISER (BaronOfStuff)

To be honest, I was iffy about this design. I tend to favor small bombers (or medium, if absolutely necessary) since bombs are light and they can dodge planetary missiles better that way. Still, even in small numbers these destroyed absolutely everything on the ground. I definitely approve.

    THE BALDR (Heresiarch Grimm)

Grimm confuses me with yet another variation on this name from Norse mythology, but he knows how to build ships that can take a beating. I don't think we ever lost a single Baldr.

    THE THIRTEEN (Heresiarch Grimm)

An interesting design and a fun ship to use. It works quite well as long as it has others taking the hits for it, and makes good use of the High Energy Focus Module.

    THE FEGELEIN V (BaronOfStuff)

Put a Megabolt Cannon on a ship you can crank out by the thousand, and suddenly you're tearing apart ships like they're made of tissue paper. Combine this with its speed, and you've got a fighter that can wipe out enemy stacks before they even have a chance to retreat.

    THE SURTR (Heresiarch Grimm)

Our first design specifically made to fight the Guardian, and it performed its role well. There's really no special tricks to it - it's fast, it has absolutely staggering firepower, and its armor is the thickest we've ever used. As powerful as the Guardian was, the Surtrs hit it hard and survived its devastating weapons long enough to buy the time needed for our artillery to finish it off. Speaking of which...

    THE KREUZER (BaronOfStuff)

The Guardian's powerful ECM meant this wasn't able to do as much damage as our Surtrs, but the Kreuzer was much cheaper and pulled off the incredible feat of hitting the Guardian outside of its weapon range.

    THE ZERSTOERER (BaronOfStuff)

I thought the Konig was an MLRS, but this takes it to new and ridiculously awesome levels. Okay, the Hyper-X rockets that the scatterpacks used weren't quite powerful enough to be truly effective against the Guardian, but the ship with the really hard to spell name still pulled its weight in the final battle for Orion.

Another Let's Play successfully completed! Thanks to everyone who watched it, and especially thanks to BaronOfStuff and Heresiarch Grimm for all their planet names and ship designs. I hope you liked seeing your war machines conquer the galaxy.

This marks the second LP I've got under my belt, and I can't think of better choices for the first two than my favorite games of all time. I hope you enjoyed watching it, because I certainly enjoyed making it. It was a relatively short project that nicely offset my long, dedicated X-Com LP.

I currently don't have any future LPs planned, but you can bet if I make one, it'll be for a game that can allow community participation like the ones I've already done. That's what, for me at least, makes these LPs worth doing and separates them from just playing the game again, but taking screenshots.

    In conclusion:

    RE: Master of Orion!

In the final moments before the last enemy ship is attacked and blasted into 9001 pieces of astro-debris, Space Admiral BaronOfStuff sends a message to the captain of the enemy 'fleet':

    "TA-TA. THANKS FOR THE GALAXY."

I deserve a medal for designing the Fegelein. Demonic Spiders... IN SPAAAAAAAACE!!!

I enjoyed this one. Partly because my head didn't get vapourised halfway through it, but mainly because I had a bigger say in how everything was turned to cosmic dust. Several times over.

Now, as for your next venture into the unknown, I would suggest Jagged Alliance, but it's not really ideal for this sort of LP (at least not as much as this or X-Com have been). I'll try and think of something though.

    Eventually.

Unless it's your Artillery, which invariably get blown up at the start of any given enemy invasion and leave everyone else spreading their meagre forces even thinner. But that's another story altogether.

And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

I've increased the image limit to thirty. That should be more than enough. If you have trouble in future, the old trick of merging two images into one should suffice, but no one should need more than thirty in a post. Nevertheless, good job on the LP. I'll be honest. The LPs haven't interested me personally, but maybe in the future others will join in.

Baron: That's because that tactic used to work well in the old RA builds and no longer does. I'll figure out some form of new tactic eventually.

Going back to LPs for a second, I wonder how us humans dealt with these aliens in the past... Say around, 1999?
