RE: UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)

After weeks of having nothing happen, there was finally something going down near Entryway. The daring pilot with the stupid name, Rad Gravity, was sent to intercept and attack the UFO...

    Part 1
UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!) At 09:15, alien activity was detected in Egypt. The UFO had previously been detected, but managed to land before our fighter could get anywhere near close enough to engage. Once again, things were going to potentially get messy...

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
The meatshields troops were mobilised and sent out to put an end to this unwelcome activity, no matter what it could be. Seriously, the aliens could have been sharing the technology for clean and free energy, but PHALANX is having none of that "we come in peace" bull****.

    Sent To The Frontlines:
    LEADER
    Tevin: Shotgunner
ST mercenary Tevin has a bad habit of losing his temper when given orders by anyone other than himself, frequently resulting in him sitting around and sulking while everyone else suffers the extra workload. He also claims to be unrivalled in his skills with all shotguns, but nobody at Entryway has seen him land a hit with one. Ever. Not even during training sessions against immobile targets. Still, he is somewhat experienced for this sort of thing.

    Soldiers:
    Dr. Killjoy: Assault
    Mantis: Machinegunner
    Nix: Flamethrower
    Somasol: Sniper
    Diz: Assault
    BloodylilCorpse: Assault
    Flare: Assault

It's worth noting that only 6 armour units were available, with Flare and Bloody having to go without. Provided they were kept at the back, nothing bad was going to happen. Right?

    Part 2
UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
On landing, mission leader Tevin took a run south... despite the UFO and enemy activity being situated to the north of the map. This could only be an omen. Was something terrible going to happen? Or was Tevin just living up to his reputation and being thick? Either way, he was looking at a disciplinary for this one.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Not long in, a civilian was snuffed out. Dr. Killjoy and Somasol were sent in to check the nearby area, with Somasol striking it lucky in the southern building. He encountered an enemy, caught loafing around only a short distance away from the murder scene. Maybe things weren't going to be so bad after all?

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
He promptly dealt with the invader, terminating it with extreme prejudice. Although the action of blasting something in the face at point-blank range with a high-powered rifle may be excessive, there was no point in pulling punches. Pulling triggers, on the other hand...

    Part 3
UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
After taking a hit, Nix saw no other option but to engulf this murderous alien bastard in flames, further avenging the deceased civilian before this alien even had time to realise just how literally hot things were getting.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
After much wandering around clearing buildings of nothing whatsoever, the death of another civilian caused a mad rush back to the recent barbeque area. Briefly before this here wonderful moment, Flare was unfortunately gunned down by an alien's reaction fire while heading up the nearby stairs to gain a better view. Bad news, yes, but at least it was quick and probably painless... well, it was definitely quick. It suddenly looked like Diz was about to get the back of his head caved in too... except this alien had now spent everything just getting into place.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
As such, Diz only had to worry about aiming his rifle and spraying a load of ammunition into his would-be-attacker. Score three dead aliens, plenty of vengeance, and the mission was a success.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Losing civilians is just the way things are going to go during the invasions of reasonably populated areas, so it's best not to get worked up about that sort of thing. It's never fun losing a team member either, but this one could have been worse. Diz was lucky to escape unscathed; a few steps closer to the building and he'd have found himself being bagged up, tagged, and sent home in pieces too. Still, this small victory should show that the aliens are being dealt with, and keep funding nations on side for a while longer.

In other news, a second fighter craft was built, and from now on all detected UFO's will be dealing with both interceptors at once. Or at least they will once the bastards stop crashing/landing before our guys can even get close. Also, basic energy weapons are being researched to give our forces an edge in following skirmishes.

RE: UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)

Another victory, despite our inept field commander! Too bad we lost someone, though. Hopefully in the near future we can buy enough kevlar to fit everyone.

Given that we saw an alien survive a direct grenade hit, getting lasers would probably be helpful. Plus melting stuff is always fun.

...Come to think of it, what kind of terror attack only involves three aliens?

Oh, this wasn't the terror attack, but just another routine mission. The Terror Mission is coming up, as soon as I can face the fact that I'm going to need a room of cloning machines, and possibly a new Tevin.

You know what happens when Tevin goes into overdrive..! Anyhow, glad to see we scored another victory, even if my involvement in the fight was minimal. (Hey, better than KIA.) I'll agree though; three aliens is a rather small force. I look forward to mowing them down in larger numbers.

RE: UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)

Speaking of Tevin, he was supposed to make sure nothing could sneak around via the west side and attack the squad from behind. Instead, he managed to get himself stuck in a house a couple of turns in, with a couple of civilians then suddenly blocking the doors and as such leaving an entire flank open.

I am more than tempted to say that because of his incompetence, he's indirectly responsible for Flare's death.

Oh, and you two were scouting the north-east corner of the map. I was expecting something blue and greasy-looking to be hiding somewhere around the north edge, but it turns out that there was nothing up there but more bloody civilians.

RE: UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)

Shortly after the Icarus landed back at Entryway, Nix was booted off-duty and into the hosptial to recover from medium wounds. Then all this started to happen...

    Part 1

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)

Alien activity was again detected, this time in the southern regions of Africa. A small farming area called Lilongwe, to be precise. Well, not so much mere 'activity'. These aliens weren't just going around digging up potatoes or throwing eggs at houses; this was apparently an all-out attack, by default classing this assignment as something known as a 'Terror Mission'.

    Send in the drones!
    LEADERS

    K-Yerp: Assault
Now back from hospital and completely healthy, was once more assigned with the task of co-leading this mission.

    Archvile78: Assault
Nobody knows just what the 78 is supposed to mean, but then nobody's really bothered asking her either. Archvile tends to spend most of her free time around Entryway watching Stuffknight torture himself with bad games, often taking over for a while when it looks like he's about to break something (or someone) out of rage.

    Soldiers:
    Stuffknight: Close/Explosive
After being threatened with a NES copy of Captain Planet, he was finally persuaded to stop playing bad games and actually do something for everyone else at Entryway. Unfortunately, the constant sitting in front of a TV, combined with his dwindling sanity and obsession with making all sorts of things explode in a crude manner, has limited his skills to using close-ranged weapons and high-explosives. Being a difficult person, he insisted on wearing a different uniform if he was going to be sent out. His reason? He didn't even bother thinking of one.

    Diz: Assault
    Somasol: Sniper
    Dr. Killjoy: HMG
    Mantis: Grenadier
    BloodylilCorpse: Assault

Unlike last time, there was now plenty of armour to go around, with several spares being left to collect dust.

With everyone packed up and ready to go, the Icarus dropship was sent out to travel halfway across the globe. Maybe not literally halfway, but it was still going to be a long flight to Lilongwe.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Rat's cocks!! Just shy of the target area, a UFO was detected. Icarus was armoured and armed, but not exactly a worthy combat vessel... so-called 'ace' pilots Rad Gravity and Dash Galaxy were told to go find this sonofabitch, and destroy it...

...but of course, it was lost the moment Icarus had moved out of range. Oh well. With Icarus landing at the destination at 9:45AM. Was this going to be as horrible as the archives of the TFTD operations made Terror Missions sound?

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Holy hell! Compared to previous, this UFO was huge, with an alien standing outside almost looking as though it was just waiting for the Icarus. With seemingly little else around, this operation was beginning to feel more and more like something Admiral Akbar could describe...

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
A trio was dispatched north to investigate a house that looked too big to be empty, while the rest of the unit was sent to try and ruin this moronic alien before it could do anything of worth for its species. With K-Yerp and Stuffknight taking point, things were looking good already.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
This seemingly wasn't to be the case for long though, with an alien gunshot ringing out. Nobody was hit, and no civilians were reported dead, so what had this alien done, except walk close enough for Somasol to take a potshot?

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Well it was certainly lucky enough to be in the 49% bracket of not being shot in the face, at least by Somasol. K-Yerp on the other hand readily leapt out from cover, and let loose a barrage of AR fire.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Chalk one up for the defenders. K-Yerp pulls a smug face and heads back for cover in the old barn.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Another alien by the UFO takes aim at Archvile, missing completely. What the hell was going on here? Were these aliens deliberately being inept, or had they been having an all-nighter drinking moonshine, and now just really, really tired?
    [hr]
    Part 2

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Obviously not too tired to do damage from a stupid range. Mantis had somehow been hit by this alien's reaction fire while trying to move around it. The alien soon moved out of sight too, complicating the situation.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
The house in the NE corner appeared to be empty after all, although there was still a second floor to check... but with the mentally-deficient occupant being alive and standing next to the only way upstairs, there was no need to go there.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Then Mantis exploded after taking another hit from another stupidly long shot, with the attacker generally just being a horrible cowardly **** and running even further away to take another shot at someone else... and missing completely.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
K-Yerp and Stuffknight then took a line north, trying to keep a visual on an alien spotted by Dr. Killjoy on his way out of the house. This very alien soon took a lousy reaction fire potshot at Stuffknight, scoring a hit. That armour was doing what it was supposed to though, and stopped him from dropping like a sack of ****. The southern alien also took a shot, but again with such crap accuracy that it was impossible to tell who it was actually aiming for this time.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Then the pair of them casually wandered straight into view of their former targets and changed the situation drastically, as if now bored of the skirmish and willing to accept death. This was going to be very, very awkward if anyone missed.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
But Archvile78 wasn't about to go blind and shoot at clouds.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Nor was Stuffknight, especially after what this one did. Two more alien corpses for the fire. But another remained. Where? Only the areas by the UFO needed exploring now.
    [hr]
    Part 3

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
With everyone slowly closing on the UFO, this alien's chances of making it to the next lunar grand prix were becoming slimmer than an anorexic's waistline.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Still nothing! Inside the UFO itself was the only place left to check. Was there even an alien left here?

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
What better way to find out than to send in Diz? He had a good record for wandering into ambushes and somehow escaping with his life.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
SUCCESS!! Well, as far as finding the alien invader goes. But was Diz going to be successful in actually killing it?

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Erm, yes. Very successful, as it goes. Like in the previous mission, Diz somehow escapes serious injury and freely plays dot-to-dot with the alien's facial features, ending its life and the mission with it.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
So there we go. Not really much of a 'Terror Mission' with only four aliens creeping around, but there was still the matter of shovelling Mantis' semi-melted self into a sack and labelling it accordingly. At least there were no civilian deaths though; this should keep the funding coming for a while yet.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
And with Russia offering the highest price, they were now the owners of a shiny UFO. I really need to build a second base with a new hangar, and start dismantling all this alien nonsense if PHALANX is going to get any new aircraft technology.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Rather typically, new armour was developed almost instantly after the old armour proved to be not quite protective enough every time.

UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)
Here's the current research list too. That damn rifle had better be worth it.

RE: UFO:AI (OLS:UK fights yet more aliens!)

Wait a minute...the Greater European Union offered a better price for the UFO than Russia did!

Shame we lost Mantis, but considering this was a terror mission, one KIA isn't terrible.

It's too bad the lasers still seem to be awhile off, but at least we'll have (what appear to be) railguns soon.

I can't help but wonder how lucky Diz really is, though. He's survived ambushes so far, but that's just going to get him thrown into more, it looks like.
