I just watched Cannibal Holocaust for the first time in years, and... well, it's simply quite shit. I can see why it kicked up a bit of a storm on release, but it's pretty laughable to say the least. The only 'controversy' is the genuine slaughter of animals on-screen -- everything else was staged.

    Anyway:
    - A Clockwork Orange
    - Hostel
    - Donnie Darko
    - Downfall*
    - Bonnie and Clyde**
    - The Exorcist (and I thought it was utter wank)
    - The Evil Dead***

    * For portraying Adolf Hitler and pretty much everyone else as actual people, instead of the obscene caricatures of ludicrously demonic evil that we usually see of him in film -- there were some fears that viewers may have been sympathetic to Hitler as everything falls apart around him... although the thousands of parodies prove otherwise (and the director, Oliver Hirschbiegel, even approves of these parodies).
** For glamourising two of the absolute worst bastards to go on a murderous crime spree and simplifying a lot by missing out a bunch of stuff. Also (to a degree) for casting an attractive pair for the lead roles, considering how ****-ugly the real duo were. But that's Hollywood.
*** Not for the theme of demonic possession, not for the excessive violence and gore, but for a scene with a tree raping a girl. Yes. That one scene is what got it classed as a 'Video Nasty' back on original release. Director Sam Raimi has since admitted that he doesn't really know why he put it in, and given the opportunity to re-do the film would leave it out entirely.
"It turned out that the ghost was just Mr. Finley, who ran the amusement park. The spooky part is that, as soon as the ghost appeared, the teenagers' dog began to speak! And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

I assume you mean The Human Centipede. Hmmm. A few weird films I've seen.

    • The Human Centipede
    • Audition
    • Ichi the Killer
    • Slow Torture Puke Chamber (I strongly advise not watching this one)

The last of those I watched with a couple of friends as we nervously laughed the whole way through. It's actually really crap, but it's also as sick as hell, so watching it with friends is rather awkward. But it's sick to a ridiculous extent, so there is some humour in it. I'm sure there are some others I have forgotten to mention. I have seen Paranormal Activity, but to be honest I don't think it counts. It does have a couple of scary moments (emphasis on "couple"), but as with a lot of films that are touted in common media as being weird/controversial, they're really not compared to some other films out there.

I might check out some of the ones in your lists.

    Jim: "How do you know?"
    Gene: "I don't!"
    Jim: "I knew it."
Gene: "That's okay. There's a first time for everything!"

    RE: Controversial/weird movies you've seen?

Yeah Mad World is quite suitable for it.

Also, thanks for spotting the typo, hah, caterpillar... Probably would make a good spoof film. Anyway, I'll have to check out a few of those that you guys mentioned especially Ichi which I've heard of before.

There's this one Masters of Horror episode that's pretty gruesome too from what I've heard, I think it's Imprint, haven't seen that yet either.
