    The Alien franchise

With Alien: Covenant coming out this Friday here in the US, I think now is a good as time as any to have a thread dedicated to the Alien films. Alien is my all time favorite horror movie. The slow burn suspence and atmosphere made it a cut above other horror movies of it's time (And now for that matter). H.R. Gieger's design was truly something to behold and his work on that movie is perfect design of lovecraftian horror. I'm not a huge fan of Aliens, which is funny since I'm drawn to action movies more than horror, but I must respect it for what it's done for movies as well as the influence it made across numerous media. Alien 3 I liked, though I haven't seen it in ages. I oddly never saw the assembly cut, so I should look into that. Alien: Resurrection...well, I don't why they felt that Joss Whedon's style would be a good fit for the franchise. I will say I did enjoy Prometheus. It's a flawed movie, sure but I don't think it's quite the Phantom Menace calibur disapointment like some folks make it out to be. Really looking forward to Covenant! I'm going to go see it with 2 of my older brothers this weekend.

I loved Aliens, but I liked Alien a lot too and its amount of suspense which is also reflected in Alien: Isolation. Out of the two I'd probably choose Aliens because I watched it first and it's one of my favourite childhood films. Also, in Aliens Ripley was a brilliant example of a great action-oriented female protagonist. Come to think of it, Outlaw Star's Hilda reminded me of her. I remember not liking Alien 3 and Resurrection at all. I never even looked into Prometheus. I guess I'd moved on from the franchise. Perhaps I should watch them all again (and Prometheus) and then check out Covenant.

No argument from me on Ripley, Mantis. She is probably one of the best examples of a female hero done right. I do prefer her portrayal in the first movie where she was an everyday women who ends up being caught up in something beyond her control. What makes it interesting is that she doesn't come off as a protaginist at first. For awhile, you think Dallas would wind up as the lead character. Also, kudo about Alien: Isolation. It captures the horror of the original movie perfectly and it's, in my opinion at least, one of the best survival horror games to come out in years.

You ever checked out the assembly cut of Alien 3? I know a lot of people say that it's an improvement over the original movie though it's still not great. Haven't seen it myself just yet.

But yeah, if you decide to check out Prometheus, make sure you do so before catching Covenant as there will be story bits and characters that will make more sense if you'e seen the former first. I saw Covenant a few weeks back and it was pretty good. My problem with it is the same problem I've had with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in that some of the story parts feel like it's just rehashing story and moments from the original movie as fan service. It's when it doesn't try to rehash Alien is when it's the most interesting. I had a few other problems which I wont go into at the moment since I wouldn't want to spoil it for you. Still, it has it's moments and it has a cool soundtrack that sounds like something from Silent Hill at times.

It's an overall mediocre franchise with only two good films, and has been milked dry for far too long. All the rehashed origin stories and mythological mumbo jumbo only further detract from what made the original such a classic IMO.
