    Ghost in the Shell

Anyone here love this coolzy anime series, Ghost in the Shell? In updated stuff a new Netflix 3D series called Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 is up in about since yesterday thanks to a friend of mine who refered me a link of the trailer for it. And wow, it looks promising especially seeing GitS in full 3D form aside from watching the original GitS: SAC series which had the 3D opening that was shown so many years back.

Count me in. My general anime interest is about as low as a snake's arse -- I can count my favourites on one hand, which means every anime I've even bothered with for more than two episodes (by extension meaning I saw the lot) -- but SAC was and is some really fucking good stuff.

And it spoke in a tortured parody of human speech: 'relp me, Raggy,' it would say. 'I am an abomination and rould re rilled. Rill re, Raggy.'"

Most of them don't seem to realise that this new one is being made by a Japanese anime studio while they're raging at Netflix.

The proper term in this scenario is "Secondaries". It's a bit ironic too see anyone raging about the animation style or live action nature of GitS because I'm almost certain these kiddos haven't read the manga.

I was going to make a thread for this 'review' if you wanna call it that, but since there is a Ghost in the Shell general thread from 2020 that wouldn't be appropriate (yes, I've read the forum rules!!!).

Last night we watched the 1995 anime movie Ghost in the Shell. I'll preface this by saying that in hindsight the watching environment was obviously not the best for a show of this nature: 5 people, voice chat & alcohol. That said, I'll provide you with a tl;dr and say that it was a 3/10 in my book.

    The Good:
    1. Animation. Ignoring everything else, the animation and choreography in a lot of scenes was stellar especially for 1995. Good on them.
    2. Vibe. GitS undeniably has its own visual flavor & sound design that on its own is a 10/10.

    The Bad (IN MY O P I N I O N):
    1. Weak cast. Motoko Kusanagi is literally the only character of any importance. I don't have anything else to say because I don't remember anyone else except for her sidekick who doesn't emote.

    2. Plot. I think this may be a bit unfair because 25 years have passed since GitS released (31 years if you count the manga) so this premise has been done to death. Do robots have feelings? Do robots have rights? If a robot is indistinguishable from a person, are they equals? etc. Lots of boring, easy to solve ethical questions. Robots are objects, humans are humans, end of story. The moral quandary proposed by this movie took me 2 seconds of thought, but if I had seen it in 1995...it could have been a really novel concept. Some plots are able to hold up over time, but this one just doesn't for me. The concept at the center of GitS has aged poorly.

    3. No resolution. What is this, a David Lynch movie? Take a side on the question you posed in your movie, cowards!
    Ending spoilers
Ending with Motoko's head screwed on a new body with a new personality doesn't resolve anything. The instance of Motoko's mind we were following through the movie is gone now, so I guess none of it mattered anyway?

Summary: I don't mind a 'deep' story/moral question, but it actually has to be deep. The characters sort of just brood and talk coldly to one another about an uninteresting premise, I was highly disappointed in a movie I expected to absolutely love. I won't be re-watching it but I could see myself picking up the manga or anime series to give some of the other material a second chance because it is such a landmark series.

Why I feel the way I do: I don't like watching characters' introspection and I don't care much for philosophy in general. I never second-guess myself or worry about who I am or things of that nature, I'm quite confident in who I am and what I feel. I expect that this show really clicks with the Evangelion crowd, which also didn't do much for me. It's fine for characters to have a moral decision to make or second-guess themselves, but it needs to lead to a tangible action within the story. Why do I like Spice & Wolf which is boring as hell but not GitS? Because at the end of a scene, the main characters take an action instead of babbling and then cutting the action there like a Lynch movie.

Scenes that go nowhere suck. GitS is 90 minutes of filler.

You never saw GitS before now? I thought you were the main Chinese cartoon man of the forum. How couldn't you have seen one of the most praised animations in history? That's like being a fan of sci-fi but never having seen Blade Runner.

Kino can't be appreciated or even comprehended during a Zoom stream, bucko. No immersion in a drunken stupor.
